No i don't think it is the same...may be you guys are a little behind. In india...there is the new format starting where there are four music directors... jatin-lalit, himesh, ismail durbar and aadesh who have chosen certain participant (i think the number was 120 or so) from different cities in the country. They have been called to bombay and were reduced to almost half last friday. There will be further reduction and only 24 or 26 will remain. 8 from the previous winners will join and they will compete against each other. The speciality in this one is that the four music directors will train them in their own banner and the music directors will fight against each other through their singers.

Sur Sangam: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa host Shaan
As part of an effort to bring in new formats, Zee's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa has announced the launch of Challenge 2005, a series that will pitch the country's top music directors against each other.

The show will use a formula in which 32 contestants from 10 cities will compete with each other.

These contenders will be shortlisted based on their singing ability. Under the guidance and training of Jatin Lalit, Ismail Durbar, Adesh Shrivastav and Himesh Reshammiya, the contestants will form four groups of eight each.

Announcing the show, Ashish Kaul, vice-president, Zee said, "Traditional Indian music has always been the core of the show. We are just extending that belief.

The most interesting part of the show is the rivalry between the music directors, who will train their contestants and pitch them against each other. I don't think this concept has ever been used on television before."

The final winners (one male, one female) will get a music contract with Universal and a chance to sing for a Zee Telefilms film, along with the winners of Cinestar Ki Khoj. They will also win a luxury car and a fully furnished two-bedroom flat in Mumbai.

The new series will air from June 9, Thursday and Friday, at 10 pm.

Jatin-Lalit
2. Ismail Darbar

I watched SA RE GA MA PA challenge 2005 yesterday, I thought it was pretty cool but Ismail Durbar was a bit rude to one guy, he kind of freaked out when the singer could'nt pronounce "tanhaiya" properly, I wish the judges would'nt be rude, after all its pretty intimidating for these young guys to be singing in front of these judges and the whole world so to speak. I think a little bit of compassion and a more gentle let down is in order SHEESH!!!!!

I agree with you, even i found ismail darbaar a little rude, not just rude seemed like he was ridiculing that participant which is not fair.

But overall the show format seems interesting and the quality of singers also better than fame gurukul.
