While I've not heard all the songs of Guru, those being aired regularly on TV channels and coming through FMs are not compelling enough to listen to the other songs of the film.
Needless to say the old charisma of ARR is waning, and it is waning fast. His compositions are lacking punch, are not refreshing & above all sound repetitive.
With surprise I note that such a talented composer is using same chord sequence, loop & fillers.
No wonder music arrangers like Pritam are ruling the roast.
(BTW the song tere bin from Bhagambhag is a rip off a Bengali song: rest of the sources will unfold soon…….)
I understand that while composing there is always pressure from the film director to conform to a specific pattern, may be this is the reason why songs sound Bombay like.
A passing note of SEL must be made who are right on top, bringing out melodies one after another. Pretty good compositions………..
And Nihira shines in the song Mera Dil from Salam-E-Ishq, a refreshing & sweet voice, I'm sure this is just the beginning for her.

I quite agree to you but ARR songs kinda grows on you after repeated listening, so can't say abt Guru songs yet.

As for Nihira, her voice was really refreshing in Mera Dil 😊

In my experience, ARR songs require listening to the songs a couple times. And I've listened to the songs from Guru and I rather like them. Again, you have to listen to them because sometimes it sounds like they are just singing sounds but there are actually words there and pretty deep poetry (though I admit, some songs sound strange at the first listen).
However, I don't know much about music, so just consider this to be my opinion.

Thanks Sinha Saab for the thought provoking thread.I think ARR music is different from others because he tries to combine both Eastern and Western music. ARR has his own fan following and they have lapped up all his compositions most of the time and he always has been in the top bracket of MD's and if not the best.

Film "Guru" look like has few(2-3) good songs for his avid fans. None of the songs in the movie looks like is going to be a super duper hit.

MD's like Pritam who "choose" songs from the best in the world are more likely to succeed because the song is a copy of the song from the best in the world. This is just my pov 😛

I think galios is right. I too when heard it for the first time did not like it. Some one had infact posted the link here in the frum itself.

But when I started listening to it everyday (it is being played everyday now on TV in some channel or the other) I am actually liking it.

You are right Dazydee... Nihira's song is really refreshing...

I agree with Dayzee here. I remember songs from the movie Roja was instantly liked by me, but some songs later in the years did not sound so sppealing on the first hear. However, after listening to them a few times, it kind of caught on...some times he gets a bit repeatitive, but he does come up with some brilliant scores otherwise..

Thanks Sinha ji, for your as usual provoking thread. I absolutely love the latest Guru songs and the intensity that A.R. Rahman has created in all his songs. There are a number of songs in 'Guru'. Here are 3 songs that I enjoy listening to. Rahman sahab has composed Guru while keeping a few things in mind – he has presented several different styles of music throughout the entire album. His work is always different from one movie to the other.

Although I have heard numerous times from a variety of different people that A.R. Rahman's music is repetitive, I have yet to believe this. His every song is unique – one just has to listen to his compositions carefully and thoroughly. A.R.Rahman is all set to weave his magic again with Guru. The little maestro has come up with inspiring music in his latest album and continues the legacy of his pairing with Maniratnam. A.R.Rahman has worked for 11 months on this album. Meanwhile, based on what we have heard, it's worth all the hard work.

We will not be able to compare one song to the other but it is still a choice of the individual listener.

My choices are as follows.

1. Tere Bina that Rahman Shab shows his wizardry. A highly addictive song with influences of Sufi Qawwalis and added the Indian classical, the song is a just simply wonderful more I listen to it I think of Kailash Kher he could be a better choice for that song. Whenever A R Rahman sings, the song becomes special. Rahman Sahab tribute Tere Bina to late master Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Rahman himself sings this song; 'Tere Bina' eventually turns out to be the best number in the whole package.

2. Ay Hairathe, a somewhat unconventional composition with influences of Ghazal music Hariharan ji what a great singer he is which he has proved again gets to show his vocal range in this number after Rahman introduces the song in his deep humming voice. Alka Yagnik too does a commendable job.

3. Barso re Na re Na re Na Na re Na re this is not your usual Baarish song. Shreya sounds very different and sweet very unusual totally different I guess that why we all call AR Rahman GURU.

Qwest bhai, I exactly liked those three songs😊. I have not watched the movie, I am sure some other songs will be more liked after watching them in the movie. Listening to songs repeatedly and than liking them later has happened to me also. I did not like the songs of film "Don" first time, but after watching its music video, I liked it much more😕.
