Mukesh Mathur arrived on the Bollywood scene in 1945 with this KL Sehgal Style number ,
Soon after he recorded all the classic numbers for Andaz giving Playback to Dilip kumar. However, when he sang Zhinda hoon iss tarah seh, for Raj Kapoor's Aag that began a relationship that gave us the amazing combination of Raj and Mukesh in many songs ranging from Awara, Shree 420, Jis Desh Mein Ganag Behti Hain, Chori Chori, Kanhiyya, Anadi, Phir Subah Hogi, Teesri Kassam, and almost all Raj Kapoor satrrers and lasted till Mukesh's untimely death in August 1976. But it all started with the song linked above.

In this current age of vocal gyrations, contortions, abnormal and questionable nasal sounds and meaningless lyrics, the yester year singers would fail miserably. I don't say this simply because I have a generation gap between what was and what is. I loved music then, and I love music now. Yet there is something missing in today's music.

To me it almost feels like eating food without the right amount of subtle spices and salt. Talat Mahmood or Manna Dey's voices were the subtle ingredients that made the music and lyrics of many a song absolutely ethereal and downright delicious. Talat began his career in Bollywood in 1945 with Jago Musafir Jago in the film Ram Laxmi. However he became an established singer with the Anil Biswasthe song, Ae Dil Mujeh Aisee Jagah Leh Chal in the film Arzoo.
Meanwhile Mannada began with a duet sung with Suriyya in the film Tamanna in 1942. However his real break came with the song Upar Gagan Vishal in the late 1949 film Mashal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9XOBlsNfh8
Since then these two singers went on to record hundreds of solos, duets, gaazals and light classical songs for movies and private albums and enriched us. Sadly, today these gems and their repertoire of music are hardly played on any broadcast medium. However I have faith that once this current trend of Bollywood music has self destructed, these old, almost ancient, songs in the history of Bollywood will make a comeback. My only hope is that they do in their original form and not remixes.

manna day imo is better for heavily classical songs.kishore kumar sang for the ones which are soulful, not too classical and require a naturally gifted person like him...
But my fav is the combo of the 2 genres, which rafi saab was best in.. i guess thats why i like rafisaab the most..
