Chapter 11
Dialogues are in purple and thoughts in red
The dawn was glowing in the orange that someone had poured in abundance. As if she has bathed in it! November was a month when the city heaved a sigh of relief that the gluey, sticky summer was on it's way back and a very pleasant winter was gearing up to succeed it! The air had a spring in it's steps; the sunlight full of verve; nature oozed an ambience filled with mirth and joy!
Finally the day had arrived!
The Banerjee and Kejriwal households looked like a frenzied hub. This was going to be the least likely event this area was going to experience. The girl who was mostly mistook for a boy,had nothing feminine about her was going to graduate to that phase where the so called attribute was the most needed……
Only on Dadi Ma's earnest plea, she let Gunjan fill up her hands and feet with intricate henna! They looked dark brown next morning and Supriya vouched that she will be the apple of her mother-in-law's eyes. All this was nothing but gibberish and hogwash for her. How on earth does the colour of your henna determine the scale of love!
Arghhh!!!!
When will this affliction end? As if this wasn't enough, neighbours swarmed in since morning to reassure themselves that Khanak was actually getting married……
The morning began with the married ladies performing a ritual where she was made to wear the white conch bangle alongwith a red coral one as per the bengali custom. They say a girl starts looking beautiful from the time she wears them; she was no exception. The lanky lass suddenly transformed into a lissome beauty. Clad in an amber cotton sari with an indigo border and with the adornments on her neat hands, she looked magnificent! Swagata's heart choked thinking of what lay ahead……
The elaborate trousseau that arrived from the Goenkas threw everyone's peeper's out of the sockets! Each and every gift overflowed with grandeur and class! It also contained the haldi(turmeric paste) in a silver bowl which was to be applied on Khanak as a part of the ceremony.
She went through with the ritual oblivious and emotionless! It was only when Gunjan was about to apply the paste that she realized.
How could she give up everything so easily? The mere query kept on thudding and shook every vein in her being!
As customary to Rajasthani wedding, the bride's wedding attire was gifted by the groom's family. Madhavi had chosen a ghaghra(ankle length skirt) in a fusion of deep carrot orange and coral with muted gold embroidery and intricate gota work on the border. The blouse was bare back with a string to help hold itself! Though supposed to be gifted by her mother's family, Madhavi arranged for the ivory bangles which were supposed to be worn by Khanak and it was Dadi Ma who wriggled those up her arms….
Her jewellery was all in gold that actually belonged to Swagata besides the jadaau set(engraved jewellery using precious and semi precious stones) which had a maang tika(forehead ornament) gifted to her by Dadi Ma who was gifted the same by her mother.
For the first time ever, everyone, moreso Gunjan conceived an entirely diverse Khanak!
Shantanu's family reached the venue right on time breaking the myth that the groom and his family always reach late. The venue was the Lake Club, one of the oldest in the city with a vast expanse of green, the Rabindra Sarobar (lake) adding that extra feather!
Shantanu looked debonair in a beige colour sherwani with very light embroidery in gold matched up with same colored churidaar and a maroon stole adding a splash of colour to the outfit!!
Since a lot of wedding rituals were the same for both Rajasthan and Bengal, the priests decided to blend them together. Pinaki asked Gunjan to bring Khanak. Gunjan dressed in a purple and gold ghaghra choli looked frail but elegant as ever!
It was the murmur of the guests around the mandap(wedding gazebo) that prompted him to turn around and there she was…..
Dressed in that ghaghra choli with a same colored veil over her head and the exquisite jewelry adorning her entire frame; the minimal makeup that augmented her beauty, she looked like a piece of carbon metamorphosed into a beautiful diamond, polished and cut to perfection. An ethereal beauty! Khanak could feel his intense gaze on her and it ruffled everything inside.
He held his gaze intact till she stood in front of him for the exchange of garlands. The ritual is known as Jaymala in hindi and Malabadal in bengali.
The slight brush of his fingers on her neck while exchanging the garland churned her gut to the core but raised his temperature to the hilt!!
This was followed by the Paanigrahan when Khanak's uncle gave her right hand to Shantanu implying him to take her responsibility from now on. Both their right hands were taken and tied together signifying the bond they would share. He could feel her hand ice cold and his about to melt!!!
Followed by the chanting of hymns which illustrated the meaning of Paanigrahan and Kanyadaan, both of them were asked to get up for the Saptapadi(seven vows),the most sacred ritual in a wedding where the bride and the groom take oath to love, respect, honour, understand, help and rescue each other in sickness and in health for the rest of their lifetime!!!!!
Shantanu held Khanak's hand much tighter than before wanting to let her know that he will give his everything to this relationship. His strong clasp conveyed a sense of belonging that she could feel! They exchanged their vows in silence with the holy fire cleansing their souls……
The red vermillion on her parting gifted her with a radiance and sparkle never seen before and Shaan and Khanak were pronounced man and wife; she was christened Khanak Shantanu Goenka!!!!
It was 2 in the morning when Madhavi welcomed the newest member of the family with open arms. Sunil though not exactly happy, fulfilled his duties leaving no stone unturned…...
