On the derogatory remarks, leaving aside the episode and how it's been depicted in serials, movies, cartoons and the like, I do have one question:

How widespread/unanomous was this perception of Sita? Was it

a. Just a dhobi (incidentally, does Valmiki mention a dhobi)?

b. A small group of people, but a minority

c. A large group of people, a majority, as seems to be shown here

d. Everybody outside the Raghukul family circle (excepting Sumantra, Vaishistha and Guha)?

Yes, as per the translation on the internet, Valmiki mentions a dhobi. But then the situation is like the dhobi accuses his wife when Ram is in disguise of an ordinary subject........And also, the wife is just seen talking to another man by the villagers, and that's what the dhobi accuses her of, unlike the situation in serials where the woman spends a night outside her home..............But I do not know how reliable the translation is.
I do believe there were people outside the Raghukul family circle who believed in Ma Sita...

True. A part of me just wishes that all common Avadi women decided to be like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Jamie Lynn Spears, and a whole host of celebreties who've made their name parading their sex. The reaction of their men would be fascinating to watch: while they may treat one transgressor like Usha, what would they do if all women chose to act the way they were suspected?😆😆😆

there is great difference in the mindset of the western women & the asian women(esp the indian women) !!!
i don't wanna comment abt the ladies related to these film backgrounds or related to the glamorous fields as they really are very bold types 🤢,
by the way i love the conservative & protective nature of INDIAN WOMEN when it comes to their modesty & chastity !!!😊
but the way ayodhya praja behaved with usha was terrible as she spent the night in the house of an old man ,who was of her fathers age& that too just to save her life !!!!! her chasity was intact & there was no reason to doubt her !!!!

Chandra, I have the Gita press translation of the Srimad Valmiki Ramayan. Rama asks Bhadra about the comments on his rajya by the citizens. This is what Bhadra has to say and I quote from the Gita press translation, " O King! Listen how the citizens talk good and ill words about you in the crossroads, in the markets, on the streets, in the forests, and in the grooves." Bhadra then describes the good the people are talking about Ram Rajya like the battle with Ravan, building the bridge, killing the rakshasas in the forest. Then he goes on to say the bad things they are talking and again I quote from the Gita Press Valmiki Ramayan, " why does not Sri Rama censure her, who formerly has been forcibly carried away by Ravan, placing her in his lap and even taken to Lanka, first, who went into the Asoka grove and remained under the control of the Rakshas? Such conduct of our wives shall have to be suffered by us also, since whatever a king does, the subjects follow. Thus, O King, the citizens of all the towns and the countryside pass remarks in so many ways."

Ayodhya praja just talked of Usha and the old boatman in terms of Man & Woman......neither did Sanjeevan nor did the so called elders of the village, consider their ages......Had they done it, things may have been different for everyone.....

@ Mandodari: Thanks for the info, I was searching for the info whether the 'dhobi' incident is mentioned anywhere....

Does the translation include the dhobi incident?

@ Deepa: You're right the avadhis just were thinking too lowly in Usha's matter 🤢. What a flawed decision they take in Usha's case and even worst when it came to Mata Sita 😡
Mandodari is right the avadhis deserve Lavanasur and his bhabishri Karkati 😈

According to the Gita Press translation there is no mention of any dhobi. Rama is sitting with "wise and witty narrators" and he is listening to stories. He turns around and asks Bhadra "What are the talks of the town and the kingdom?" At first Bhadra is hesitant but Rama assures him and asks him (Bhadra) to tell him everything without leaving anything out. Then Bhadra narrates all that he hears in the towns, the countryside, in all the streets of the kingdom. Rama is stricken with grief when he hears this and he asks the others who were present with him about it. They affirm what Bhadra says. Then Rama sends for Lakshman, Bharat, and Shatrughan to discuss this.
He then says he wants to send her away. He does not dump her in the forest as it is shown in the movies but specifically asks Lakshmana, " There in that hermitage (Valmiki's) O laksmana, leaving her and come here soon."

The reason he leaves her in Valmiki's hermitage is also given. Just before this episode Sita tells of her desire to live in Vanvas with Ramji just like they did in the forest for 14 years. So, Rama sends her to the ashram since that is what Sita wanted to do anyway. Only poor Sitaji didn't expect that she would have to live without Ramji in the ashram.

When Laksmana leaves her near the ashram he says she is being sent to the ashram because Sitaji had talked of it to Ramji before the gossip started and since the wishes of a pregnant women have to be fulfilled she is left there. Quoting from Gita Press Valmiki Ramayan, "You are to be left near the hermitage by me. Bearing in mind the orders of the King and the desire of the pregnant women that has to be fulfilled."

Also, there is a beautiful description of the second honeymoon enjoyed by Sitaji and Ramji after their coronation. Sitaji asks for a beautiful Vatika and Ramji builds it for her and they spend almost 2 years there. The description of Ramji's happiness at Sita's pregnancy is also so beautifully written. It is so sad that Sagars are not showing these tender moments between husband and wife. All the brothers with their wives lead very happy lives for 2 years before the avadhis and their gossip episodes. The Sagars, instead of showing these episodes of bliss, went straight to the gossip part and to Sita's banishment. 😕😕 A little mad at Sagars after reading the original. 😡
