Well, Vibs, too late for that now, ain't it?
Today's episode was slightly better - Lakshman, much to my surprise, did not commit agni-samadhi (did I spoil it for those of you who haven't watched so far? Oh, soooo sorry 😒!!!) At any rate, the story of Rishi Bhrigu's curse on Vishnu was narrated to him. Now, we saw Sumantra in Rama's chamber yesterday, so where, might you ask, did he suddenly come from? Well, he didn't - the story was narrated here to Lakshman by Vaishishtha, not Sumantra. Not great, since Sumantra narrated this story to Lakshman in Valmiki's version, but given the pioneering work the Sagars are doing, this one doesn't fall in the high crimes category, just the low ones.
But the thing I liked about the narration here, even though it was Vaishistha, not Sumantra, was that Vaishishtha simply narrated to him the story of Bhrigu, and stopped there. He didn't tell him the story of Durvasa telling Dasharath Rama's entire future, and in the process put Lakshman in an ethical dilemma. Now, while I don't normally like departures from Valmiki, this is one of those rare cases where I actually laud the poetic license invoked here.
Reason? Had Lakshman known that Sita was destined to end her incarnation once Rama asked her for her vow, he'd have been ethically compelled to warn Rama about it (similar to Vibhishan advising Ravan to return Sita). As a result, this is one of a few things in Valmiki's version that I find tough to believe - others being Sita being 6, K-L singing the future of Rama to his assembly after Sita's passing as 2 other major examples.
But by narrating to Lakshman only the story of Bhrigu's curse, Vaishishtha managed to assuage Lakshman, and get him to resume his service. I just wish they had shown him meeting Urmila, since it was her crying yesterday that featured. No sense of closure with these clowns.😕
Std disclaimer: yeah, the actors and actresses were great, blah, blah, blah😃
