yeah, have also heard this that he actually dug the ground under Sita's feet and then carried her! but different versions have different stories so dont know which is most true! there r so many concepts that ppl think. in any case, that was the biggest fault Ravan ever did in his life!

This version of the story comes up in the Kambaramayan (probably all the South Indian verisons - but I'm not sure if this is so with all the South Indian version. I only know for sure it comes up in the Kambaramayan). It was said that he knew he couldn't touch a Pativrata like Sita and tore out the land with Sita, the hut and the surrounding gardens and all and kept the whole settlement in the Ashok Vatika.

It was different in different versions. This may be a repeat of my previous post, but I'll explain again anyway.
In the Valmiki Ramayana, Ravan siezed or grabbed her when she had crossed the Lakshman Rekha.
In the Tulsidas Ramayan, sometime before this incident happened, when Lakshman had gone to collect fruits, roots and other food form plants, Ram had told Sita that he was going to play a more human part and til he calls her to remain in Fire's Abode. Immediately, Sita Devi, with the image of Lord Ram's feet installed firmley in her heart entered the fire and left behind a shadow of herself - no less in beauty and charm. Even Lakshman did not know what Lord Ram had done.
In the Kamba Ramayan - Since Sita Devi was a staunch Pativrata, Ravan did not dare touch her. Hence, he tore apart the land on which she lived - the cottage and all and flew off and set down this enitre settlement in the Ashok Vatika. He didn't need too much time to dig up the earth. He could do it in an instant (was too strong)

Valmiki Ramayan does not talk about Lakshman rekha. But yes, it says that Ravan grabbed Sita.

Really?
Thought Lakshman Rekha is mentioned in Valmiki Ramayan. How is this possible?

Sorry, my mistake. I got carried away by all the versions and I totally forgot Lakshman Rekha was not mentioned at all in the Valmiki Ramayan.
When Sita urged Lakshman to hasten to help her lord, he prayed that she be safe and left the place. Sita kept threatening that she would kill herself if anything happened to her husband.

In the translation I read it was not mentioned. I don't think Lakshman Rekha is mentioned in the Valmiki Ramayan.
