I think this line is Lakshman rekha as interpreted by various Puranas and folk tales.
Are you talking about Paula Richman?? She has done remarkable research on Ramayana , she also has incorporated many folk tale renditions of Ramayana in her works:

According to her Lakshman rekha is a universal concept and applies to all irrespective of gender.
