Chapter 27 - His Pain

What was darkness?

Sitting on her bed, her hands played with bedsheet and she gazed the night playing in forest through the window. Beautiful and scary night with equally attractive and dangerous forest. The sight seemed tragically beautiful and she wanted to gaze it for infinity without thinking about her own life.

Blank was how she wanted to spend her time. Without crying or thinking over her past and present. Just she and the nature.

Even if it was terrifying, wasn't it better than her past?

Sighing at the repetition of past, she leaned on headboard. She shouldn't bring the past in every thing. Particularly when she was trying to forget it.

The footsteps with noises gained her attention but she didn't turn to look at the source. Night was all she wanted to see and think. Silence was all she wanted to enjoy.

"Ain't you packing for trip, Piya?" The question brought her out of the numbing session that she was practicing with so much effort and failing.

Piya turned to Maya and gave her a long look.

Maya had returned after she was briefed by Abhay. She felt guilty for leaving Piya but she explained how she was blackmailed into leaving and had no other choice. Apparently, Kabir held more weakness of Maya than he could find about Piya. Nevertheless, after crying and apologizing both decided to move on with each other support.

"Am not going." Piya answered, dangling her feet from bed and watching them.

There was a pause for long minute.

"Do you have other plans?" Maya asked cautiously and sat beside Piya.

Piya shook her head in denial. She didn't look at Maya. Her mind playing the time when she informed Abhay about the trip.

"Then why?" Maya asked "you should come with us, Piya. Its great time to forget what happened and move on."

Piya smiled lightly. She could feel what Maya was thinking about. But there was nothing like that. She wasn't pitying over what Kabir did and no way denied to go because of everything that happened.

"Abhay doesn't want me to go." Piya informed, looking at Maya this time and recalling how Abhay had stopped her after she informed him about trip.

"Abhay stopped you?" Maya repeated in confusion.

"He thinks it isn't safe for me." Piya said gazing outside the window with same detachment as before.

"Isn't Kabir's chapter over?" Maya asked with certain fear in her voice that Piya didn't blame her for. Kabir had tortured Maya more than he tormented Piya.

"It is." Piya assured Maya with a small smile and turned back to watch the night "I don't know what's going in his mind. He never explains." Piya said with a sigh and a small smile lingered on her face. She wanted answers but she was satisfied of his support too so it didn't bother her much.

"I think he likes you." Maya said carefully observing her expressions.

Piya shook her head with a smile that didn't reach her beautifully sad eyes.

"He has someone else's in his heart. He is doing this because he is too good and worries for everyone more than anyone could." Piya answered in a trance.

She recalled how frenzy Abhay had sounded when she had informed him about the trip. So much terrified that he had called her with a name that she had heard before but Abhay didn't even realize his mistake.

"Maithli, trust me its not safe for you to go. Stay back. I'll be there with you. Don't go." Abhay had said to her after a long moment of silence and she had looked at his panicked face trying to find if he realised what he said or not.

But of course, he didn't realize calling her Maithli. He was too lost in some other thoughts to know what he called her.

A memory had also shook her and she had tried to hold it but it slipped away.

It was same. Same as before, when Abhay had called her Maithli for the first time. The same feeling of unnamed emotions with a peculiar familiarity and untouched memory.

"I never felt he liked someone." Maya said breaking her chain of anxious thoughts.

"But I know and that's really sad." Piya said softly with a distant look in her eyes.

"Sad?" Maya asked observing Piya carefully.

"To love someone dearly and abandoned." Piya said with a certain gloominess in her voice.

When was his past wasn't in his present?

The answer was never and he was aware of this very well. But hearing the name of that cursed palace from Piya's mouth was like standing in front of mirror and watching the past dancing in front of his eyes.

It wasn't good and it seemed to be the start; Start of something big; Something like digging of the past skeletons; Skeletons coming out and dancing on the tunes of fate.

Fate, that was never in his favour.

Abhay took a deep breath and coughed immediately. Holding the tree, he gazed the darkness spreading beyond him. The darkness that was captivating him in strongest grip. His eyes held the sorrow, he didn't even remember feeling.

Doon palace.

The place where every stage of his life resided but the place holding the smallest part of his life. The place where he was brought into this world but was forced in the monstrous world unknown to this world.

So much of happiness and so much of sadness, attached to that one place.

The place that must be a wreck now. Wreckage of beautiful bygone days.

Just like him.

Once full of light, now full of darkness.

"I didn't see you so upset from so long now." He heard the soft voice of his mother and hung his head in despair.

"I wasn't reminded of my real life from so long either." Abhay answered in a broken voice. The life that he tried so hard to forget was brought back by the name that was once his home.

"Real life..." Haseena trailed off, standing beside him.

"When I was human in all senses." Abhay chuckled and a mist covered his eyes. "Not just stuck between two worlds." Abhay completed in a mere a whisper and gazed the darkness that was his present now.

"Abhay..." Haseena breathed in shock, staring him in disbelief. It was so long since Abhay talked about that life of him. Else he was usually drowned in guilt and love of Maithli.

"When I was me. When Abhay was Abhayndra Rajput and he didn't need to hide his identity." Abhay said recalling that time of his real life while staring the darkness that took away his light and his identity.

Haseena gasped looking at the pain shining on Abhay face. The pain that wasn't for Maithli first time. But the pain that was more human and more basic that it was too difficult to accept.

"I- I thought you were over it, Abhay." Haseena said, not liking the pain in his eyes. Wasn't guilt and sorrow of separation enough that Abhay had to break over his miserable present life and feel for his past life?

Abhay gave a painful smile.

"I was, mom. I was until Maithli was there to help me. But her death took away a part of me that was more like soul. Nothing can help me anymore. Everything hurts more than it should." Abhay said still gazing the darkness that filled his soul.

"If only I was more human then maybe this fake life wouldn't have burden me like this. Then at least there was hope of forgetting and moving on. A hope of happy life without looking at every face to find an enemy hidden there. Or at least, hope of death that would end all the miseries." Abhay gave out a painful sigh and turned to look at Haseena. His eyes were filled with the agony and misery that had darkened his life centuries ago.

"A hope is all that gives reason to live. But we're so cursed that we don't even have any hope. We can't even hope for any good thing. We have to be careful of our every step fearing someone would attack us. We have to be careful with every face we meet in the fear that they might be conspiring against us. And we have to be careful of such damn thing as basic as breathing so we don't end up killing ourselves." Abhay said, his voice raising with every word and finally he stopped painfully. He hated this life. He never loved anything after Maithli.

"So much of careful that I feel suffocated of this caged life. Everyday, it is worst than the death I went through. If only Maithli wouldn't have exchanged her life for mine, it would've been so easy to free myself from this prison." Abhay completed in a broken whisper that strangled Haseena.

"Why, Abhay? Aren't we anything for you? Was Maithli all you could think of living and we meant nothing at all? Isn't your life worth your parents, you spent more than century now?" Haseena asked, she couldn't see him hoping for death everyday when he meant so much to them.

Abhay jerked to Haseena and a shock reeled down his body. It was the first time Haseena made him look at the aspect he never noticed. First time, Haseena didn't console him but raise a question that he never thought of.

"Mom..." Abhay muttered not knowing how to react to his mother's words. Why didn't he think about them before? Was he too lost in his loss to notice what pain he was inflicting on them?

But was it his fault that fate played so much with him that he felt like a toy? Was it his fault that he wished for one person in his life and nothing else? So much so that he gave up his life for her only to lose her for this dead life only?

Was it wrong to feel bad after everything that happened to him? After everything he lost?

"I can understand your guilt of unable to save the girl you loved, that too twice. But how can you expect me to understand your unwillingness to die when there's everyone for you? When we are there for you and when your clan cherish you so much. Is the death of one person ends of this world, Abhay?" Haseena pointed

"She was my world, mom. I... I..." Abhay trailed off not knowing how to speak his feelings that he had bottled up for years and even forgot how he felt for them.

"Who are we then, Abhay?" Haseena asked with hurt in her eyes.

It undid Abhay. Shook that wall of resistance in him that was supporting him by hiding his pain.

Abhay fell on his knees and let the tears ran from his eyes. He lost so much in his life, in fact lost his life, that he didn't know how to cherish what he held anymore.

But no matter everything that he lost, he didn't want to lose more.

Even if he had to scratch open his heart to let his mother know that he was helpless in front of the wounds that fate stabbed and that still hurts.

"Am sorry, mom. Am really sorry, for hurting you. But she was there when no one was. When I didn't even know about you. She was there with me when I embraced this world and she was there when I could've lose my life but she took the death. She was there as long I could remember. She was there and everywhere with me. Everywhere." Abhay cried sitting on the wet grass and telling the tale of his wounds that had no medicine.

Haseena sat beside him and touched his shoulder to provide him the support.

"She was part of my soul and she took away that part with herself. I feel empty without her, mom. Empty and lonely. How can I live without my soul, mom? How should I move on from my own happiness and be happy? How should I move on from her who held my whole life? How can I live forgetting my life?" Abhay asked with tears in his grey eyes and looking at Haseena to provide her answers, to show her the path of lights and happiness when all he was able to see was darkness.

His eyes shouting for help, broke something in Haseena. She shouldn't have opened the old wounds and she surely shouldn't have talked about Maithli when she knew what Maithli did for Abhay and how Abhay lived for Maithli.

Abhay and Maithli were their for each other but the cruelty of fate separated them in most painful way. Took the life of one in exchange of others.

An end for one and the lifetime guilt for other.

Killed her life. Killed his happiness.

"Abhay, we'll be there for you. We are always there for you." Haseena said not knowing how else to tell him that they were there for him.

"But I'll be without love." Abhay whispered in a broken voice. His cry had stopped and he sat with an emotionless look while drowning in the sea of dark pain. "still alone at countless nights and still lost without her support."

Haseena lowered her gaze, understanding his point but she couldn't see him hoping for death either.

"Look at Piya, Abhay and see how she is living. See what she went through in her life. Isn't she alone and lonely? Without any support and love? But she is living and so we all have to. So you have to." Haseena tried to make him understand, she wanted him to live somehow.

Her name jolted him out of the grief and he looked at Haseena with a blank look which made her hope that he would've understood her point.

"She is still better than me, mom." Abhay said, his voice filled with an empty void. "she'll fall in love and enjoy numerous moment of happiness. Have someone or other besides her. A friend, a lover or a supporter. She has countless options in her life. Or if not happiness then at least she'll have death as her solace at one point of life. But the eternity that I have to live without love is too miserable to live. Too empty for the breeze of happiness. Too dark for the candle of love." Abhay said, his voice was steady and calm but the chaos that his words held shook Haseena to the core.

Haseena dropped her hand and stared him. His words held the depth of his loneliness that she didn't know he was living with.

How could she expect him to live for her when she got the love of his husband but he got betrayal and pain and death? That too for eternity. Too long for anyone to bear the pain of loneliness.

"Piya needs you, Abhay. At least, think about her and try to live for her by forgetting your apprehensions and fears." Haseena said in a feeble voice, fighting for him last time.

"What then?" Abhay asked slumping his shoulder and gazing the green grass crying in the shadows of night.

"Just a year or two for her. What about century later?" Abhay asked seeking a hope from her that she didn't where to bring from.

Haseena had no answer.

He sat there. Lost in the darkness. With nothing but emptiness and pain in his dark life.
