Chapter 28 - Change

The change in her was terrifying. Her eyes were calculating everything, but it was the brain that was processing information, not the heart. There was carelessness in her usual caring gait. She seemed lot mature than the first time she stepped in his place.

A bitter taste came over his mouth. He never wanted this. Changing her was his intention, but he never wanted her to lose her innocence.

Innocence was her trademark that should've lived within her.

But who was he kidding?

When did innocence breathe after understanding the monstrosity of the world?

Innocence would die natural death or the world would kill it anyway.

Abhay let out a controlled breath and stepped away from Piya, letting his mother meet her as they stood in the dimly lit hall of his mansion despite the bright sun outside.

Leaning on sofa, he watched the interaction of his mother with Piya.

"Long time, Piya," Haseena said taking her in a calming hug.

His mother had mastered in understanding people. Her smooth behaviour would emote the exact feelings, the other person deserve.

"Some days," Piya answered cautiously with a smile and a shrug that surprised Abhay.

Her reaction wasn't positive. Abhay could see she was pointing the truth without going blunt. The usual sweetness of her seemed faded.

"I missed you in these few days," Haseena said careful with her words and expressions. The smile on her face was unwavering.

Clearly, his mother understood Piya point exactly as meant.

"You see, these two are kinda cold. Men, I must say," Haseena said breezily while rolling her eyes at Abhay and Chand.

Abhay watched the smile blooming on Piya face and finally, Piya chuckled from heart. Only his mother could do that.

"College, you know, aunty," Piya said making a cute face.

"I understand," Haseena said with a sigh.

Abhay was amused.

His mother was surely something. It was their first interaction under normal circumstances, and his mother was already acting so of Piya age.

"Hello, uncle," Piya turned to Chand this time.

"Enjoy your time," Chand said acknowledging her wish in weird comforting way.

His father was like that only. Stern and cold, but his words always pulled different strings, if thought carefully. His family actually got power over the words. Why not? They lived longer and witnessed more than any species.

"You can come to me if he troubles you with his silence," Haseena said to Piya while pointing towards Abhay.

Abhay stood up straight and gave a bored look to his mother. At the most, he didn't expect his mother to accuse him in that manner.

But amusement came in the eyes of Piya and Abhay groaned in displeasure. The last thing he wanted was his mother to bond with Piya just to trouble him.

"Let's go upstairs," Abhay said taking the charge before his mother could decide to comment something else on him.

Ironically, he didn't want Piya to get wrong idea about him, after his every hard-work to make her hate him.

"Can we go in the garden?" Piya said surprising him by her request.

Abhay looked at her hopeful eyes and wondered what was she actually thinking. He used to read her mind but after the incident, Piya had locked her brain, as if she was trying to hide every thought, not from him but from herself.

Abhay looked at his mother. She was stiffened by the idea. He looked at his father who shook his head, motioning Abhay not to accept her wish.

The garden of their mansion wasn't actually garden. It was directly linked to the forest which meant threats and danger.

"Just for an hour," Abhay said agreeing with Piya and ignoring his father's warning. He got mind of his own and in Piya matter, he never listened to his parents.

Piya face lit up and that was the happiness Abhay wanted to see on her face. She always listened to him, so he got the responsibility to listen to her rare wishes too. Besides, the garden wasn't danger until sun was blazing on the sky.

His father might think its wrong but he didn't feel so. Besides, right or wrong was a question never answered correctly in his world. Every right got the destruction and every wrong got the benefits.

Abhay saw the look on his father face and gave him a nod, assuring that he would take care. His power would be enough to work under the sun for hour, so to keep Piya scent hidden.

Abhay and Piya walked out of the mansion, in the garden surrounding the mansion. Abhay leaned on the wall of mansion under the shade as Piya walked ahead in the sun.

Abhay watched her admiring the wild flowers. Under the bright sun, she looked adorable playing with the flowers. The shine on her face was brightened and a soft smile radiated on her face.

Abhay was fascinated by her happiness. After everything she went through, after the bad past and after the constant reminder of a broken family, little things were bringing joy on her face. It was a miracle to see a broken person happy with mere flowers.

Seeing her enjoying, Abhay could see her holding the hope of life and love. A sense of pride filled him for Piya. He wanted to see her like that always; hopeful, strong and happy.

Abhay was gazing her but she didn't even spare him a glance and remained lost in her own world. Abhay felt it strange but he liked it too. It seemed a therapeutic time for Piya, and Abhay was glad Piya took the most of it without wasting any second.

Abhay stood up straight as it was time to go inside. He didn't want to disturb the beautiful moment of Piya but he had to.

"You love books, right?" Abhay said getting the idea and gaining her attention.

With her beautiful brown eyes, she looked at him and nodded softly.

"There's a library. Am sure you'll enjoy your time," Abhay said walking towards the house knowing well Piya would follow him with enthusiasm.

"You never showed the library, last time?" Piya questioned as they walked inside the mansion.

"It is a personal library," Abhay answered, walking in the corridor of second floor.

He was actually unsure what to say. Last time, he was too burdened to think about library or any normal routine. Guess, his mistake. It would've helped a lot.

"I never said it's public," Piya retorted.

Boggled by her response, Abhay halted. He looked at her annoyed face with wide eyes. His mouth was slightly open.

"What?" Piya snapped, confused of his reaction.

"I never knew you can taunt," Abhay pointed, she seemed so different today. First, she answered his mother and now this.

Where was the meek, sweet girl?

No, not that he wanted her to be that. But, this sudden change was surprising.

"That's because I didn't know you much, and also because you always acted like you'll kill me," Piya said easily.

"You were scared?" Abhay asked amused. He had seen her frightened but he never knew he scared her so much she wasn't even herself with him.

"I have my own comfort zone," Piya said annoyed by his remark.

Idiot him; when she was frightened, she would surely not be herself.

"So you're comfortable enough to be annoyed of me, now," Abhay asked playfully. Her answers and expressions were a treat, he wasn't ready to miss.

"Precisely same way you're comfortable enough to tease me now," Piya said narrowing her eyes at him with a tinge of anger.

Abhay was taken aback by her words. He was unaware of what he was doing. A shock ran down his spine. He was actually being playful after years.

"You talk too much," Abhay commented before looking away and walking down the corridor hastily.

"This," Piya talked behind him. "This is the reason I was silent all the while."

Abhay found a smile creeping on his face. Her reply and the irritated tone was cute. She was actually annoyed of his remark that he had said more than once.

But realising his smile, he quickly went stoic and rushed to the end of corridor where library was hidden.

Opening the door, Abhay switched the lights letting the golden shine melt in the lavish library. Chandelier was spreading the golden light on the old and new books arranged on the polished racks in six rows. The air was heavy with the intoxicating smell of dusty old paper blended with the smell of fresh ink and paper.

It was his personal treasure of thousands of books. The otherworld created by Maithli and nourished by him after her.

Definitely, he never thought of sharing this personal space with anyone.

But here he was. With Piya.

"Wow," Piya exclaimed walking in centre and gazing the filled up racks of books while running her fingers over them.

"You never seemed bookish," Piya said glancing him for a moment.

Abhay shrugged. He wasn't exactly bookish and definitely didn't read in public. Reading was his late night solace and private time companion.

She was checking the books in wonder. A spark dancing in her eyes. It seemed so similar. Similar to the eagerness in Maithli eyes.

Both were so same, yet so different.

Ringing of phone echoed in the library. With an exaggerated sigh, Piya took out of her phone.

Abhay pressed his smile. She was cutely disappointed on being disturbed.

"Yeah, Mish," Piya said, running her eyes over the titles.

"How can you ditch me like this?" Misha shouted from other side. "You didn't even care to tell me beforehand. I'm here screaming that Piya has yet to come only to find you ran away."

Abhay shook his head. He was able to listen to Misha. The girl was too loud for her own good.

"Calm down, Mish," Piya talked softly "It was a sudden plan."

"Sudden plan with that arrogant Raichand," Misha said sarcastically.

Abhay raised his eyebrow and Piya shot him a glance only to look away with embarrassment. He wasn't really ignorant of flowery words people use for him. Misha thoughts too.

"Mish, I wasn't in mood for long journey. It tires me," Piya said bashfully.

"So you decided to trap me with tracker," Misha said angrily

"Shut up, tracker," Misha yelled on other side.

Abhay pulled out his own iPhone so not to seem as a statue to Piya. But his attention was more to the conversation than on his iPhone.

It was interesting conversation and he was actually keen to listen.

"C'mon, Mish, you really don't need anyone to go around the trip," Piya said with a smile.

"Whatever,"

There was pause from Misha side.

"Birdie was asking if you'll like to join her for shopping. She wants help in choosing outfits for her marriage," Misha said, this time there was certain degree of cautiousness in her voice.

Abhay stopped acting he was busy in iPhone and turned his whole attention to Piya reactions. She seemed uncomfortable as expected.

"Mish, I don't like shopping," Piya said in a weary voice. It was a hint she didn't want to be forced.

Abhay eased up. At least, Piya listened to him and was standing up for herself. But Misha was really rebellious. He had warned that girl but no she was too stubborn.

"I understand," Misha said in weak voice.

"Ok then, I'll meet you after your trip. Get some pics for me." Piya said cheerfully.

Abhay watched her in wonder. How quickly she changed her sadness into happiness. Changed her past into present.

"No pics for ditchers," Misha snapped and cut the call without proper bye.

With a sigh, Piya locked her eyes with him. Abhay realized she covered her sadness, didn't change into happiness. Because her eyes held the pang of hurt.

"They didn't care to apologise?" Abhay asked, he wanted to know her thoughts if she was ready to share.

"They want to apologize that's why Misha is trying to arrange our meeting. But I try not to meet them because honestly, it doesn't matter to them." Piya said nonchalantly but her eyes gave away her turmoil to Abhay.

"And Misha is forcing you," Abhay scorned, he had warned Misha against forcing Piya.

"She is trying but never forced. Just persistent, you know her na. Otherwise, she is really caring a lot for me," Piya said with a bit of happiness.

"And there's no effort from other Dobriyal?" Abhay was disgusted of Arnab Dobriyal but he tried to hid his emotions from Piya.

What kind of man of principle he was?

"Other than Mrs Dobriyal? No. She knows my truth so is trying a little extra. But well, doesn't matter. She don't want me in their life and I don't want to be with them either," Piya said.

That was new information for Abhay. He never forced Piya so he knew parts of her life.

Madhu Dobriyal knew more than Arnab Dobriyal which made her culprit rather than victim.

"Others are leaning on Misha and Misha is listening to me," Piya shrugged.

Abhay relaxed. Misha was really guilty of her doings and she was actually ordering others while taking care of Piya which meant he shouldn't really care for Dobriyals much.

"I wonder why," Piya muttered thoughtfully and started to check books, only to stop abruptly and turn to look at him.

Abhay noticed her looking at him with wide eyes and a sense of recognition. She didn't voice, but it was clear she understood he was the reason.

But Abhay showed no emotions and no indication that he was the reason. Even then, Abhay could see Piya understood the matter and accepted it so only.

Without question and without conversation. Exactly the way Piya would do.

Piya walked out of his sight behind the shelves and came out a minute later with a brand new book in her hand.

"Fault in our stars?" Abhay frowned, looking at the cover.

"You didn't read it," Piya asked noticing the dust covering it.

"I don't like it," Abhay said looking away, the truth was he couldn't read it. His life was enough tragic and he didn't want to deal with another one. Besides, after reading some pages he would drift into memories, so never got to read.

"And you still kept it," Piya said raising her eyebrow.

"You can also read something better," Abhay said ignoring her suspicious gaze. The title somehow didn't let him throw away the book. It made him feel so connected to his life.

"I'll read it for now," Piya said looking at the book with interest.

"I'll still suggest you something else," Abhay insisted, he wanted her to read something better than tragic and crying stuff.

"Select for me then," Piya said keeping the book back on its place.

She was getting sharp, Abhay had to admit. It was good and it was bad because he had to listen to her. Or answer.

"Any specific genre?" Abhay asked, he had an inkling that she might act stubborn if he denied to select for her.

"Mystery?" Piya asked rather than answering.

"Detective?" Abhay asked taking the Study in Scarlet from the shelf. It was Maithili favourite series and was the first novel whenever he would think. The novel he would take extreme care of.

"Perfect," Piya grinned snatching the book from his hand.

Abhay stared her in disbelief. His jaw might've dropped if he hadn't learned to be ineffective so many years ago. He really regret not seeing this Piya before. But then it wasn't just her real self but her change self too.

"And where shall I read this?" Piya said looking around for a place to sit.

There was no place to sit in library other than floor where Abhay usually sat. But he wasn't going to tell her that.

Abhay said nothing knowing she would come up with her own place, and exactly that happened.

"Is there terrace?" Piya asked, looking at him.

Abhay nodded. As they got out of the library, Haseena came with snacks.

"Nice choice," Haseena said surprised by the book in Piya hand.

Abhay avoided looking at Haseena.

"Abhay selects it for me," Piya said with a grin.

Abhay closed his eyes for a moment. His mother and Piya were actually forming a team against him.

"I can see why?" Haseena remarked looking at Abhay.

"Why?" Piya asked curiously.

Abhay mentally slapped his forehead. Piya would kill him today.

"His special novel," Haseena said.

Abhay groaned and took the snacks from Haseena. He had to leave before his mother ends up saying something, he dislike the most.

"He didn't tell," Piya said sounding surprised.

"We'll meet you later," Abhay said to Haseena hoping to end the conversation.

"He never says anything anyway," Haseena replied to Piya ignoring Abhay words.

Cursing, Abhay walked away knowing Piya would follow and the conversation would end. Exactly that happened too.

"Who's Siddharth?" Abhay asked as they walked the stairs. It was the perfect time to talk about this matter. The name that slipped in Piya mind and mind-heard by Abhay.

Abhay wanted to know why that name was affecting her.

He heard her sighing and could feel her sadness even without looking at her.

"Misha brother,"

Abhay showed no emotion but his pace slowed as he searched for a memory anywhere related to a son of Dobriyal. There was none.

He wondered why a person like Arnab didn't have his son with him.

"The only Dobriyal kid I met in childhood and it seems am somewhere alive in his memories."

"Any different from Dobriyal clan?" Abhay asked understanding Piya emotions for her half brother. He didn't want Siddharth anywhere near if he too was same as other Dobriyal.

"No idea," Piya shook her head "I met him once. Avoided him the most."

Abhay nodded. He might see Siddharth and dig some information of him. If Siddharth showed signs of remembering Piya then he must have got some idea about Piya too. And if Piya emotions were anything to go by, both got close as siblings in their childhood.

It seemed Siddharth Dobriyal was name of his own.

They entered on the vast and empty terrace with only swing in its centre. The forests seemed clear even through the entrance; the branches of huge trees falling on the south of terrace and the tops of other trees visible from other the opposite corner and the front.

Piya walked to the swing, ready to read the novel when Abhay walked to her and gave her the snacks.

"You too eat," Piya said placing the snacks in middle of swing as both sat on opposite corner.

Abhay sighed and took a little for her satisfaction. He didn't want any doubt in her mind to grow about their too little appetite.

"You eat like ant and still lecture me about eating," Piya said with annoyance.

"I don't eat every stuff," Abhay said looking away from her and gazing the top of trees giving a glow due to the setting sun.

"You don't eat anything," Piya grumbled.

Abhay shot a look to see if she was doubting him. But she was already immersed in novel.

Abhay relaxed marking her remark as casual. He walked to the south and leaned on wall feeling the soft leaves that were his home and his darkness. His gaze remained on Piya who was immersed in the book.

The variety of emotions on her face were adorable, and the way they quickly changed was fascinating.

As the night fell, Piya put down the book unable to focus in darkness and leaned on the swing, rocking it softly.

Abhay looked at the half-moon that seemed even more half with clouds around it.

He heard soft footsteps. Turning, he found Piya walking to the front. He watched as Piya leaned on bannister and get lost gazing the forest surrounding his mansion and the night that descended with a mask of peace.

"Abhay," Piya called.

Abhay looked at her side profile that was visible to him.

"What do you think?" Piya asked softly.

"About?" Abhay asked, holding the leaf that fell over his shoulder.

"Night, forest and darkness?" Piya asked

Abhay became silent. They were his identity. The identity he hated and wasn't ready to talk about.

"Dangerous," Abhay said looking at the darkness engulfing them. Sadness lingered in his eyes.

"I feel," Piya started gazing the darkness "I have a relation with them. This night give me peace. This forest seems to call me. Darkness always provide me solace."

"I feel I belong here. Between night and forest and between darkness and nothing. " Piya completed in a whisper that held more power.

Abhay stared her in disbelief. His eyes widened in shock. Her words shook him. This wasn't good.

The darkness that he hated was attracting her and he couldn't afford the implications of her words. She shouldn't be attracted to such monster from where there wasn't any coming back.

He didn't know how to tell her that. No words and no proper way by which he could let her know the danger.

Knowing what bizarre expressions his face must be displaying, Abhay looked away when Piya glanced towards him.

"I'll get food for you," Abhay said and got no reply from her. It rattled him. There was something wrong with Piya tonight. The way she was too lost in darkness and her eerie words.

He should distract her somehow. It wasn't good for her to think that way.

But before distracting her, he needed his own time to calm himself. His years of defense to be indifferent was falling and he needed a moment of solitude to calm himself.

Hiding his face crawled with worry, he ran downstairs and entered in dining area that wasn't even used by them.

He thought over everything that Piya said and her lost gaze surrounded his mind. What was she hiding? Why was she talking the way she was talking?

Or was he thinking too deeply? Reading between nothingness and acting paranoid?

His gaze fell on his trembling hand. He wouldn't want Piya to enter his darkness. It was a fall in darkness that would never end. An utter desolation with no cure.

She deserved better than the darkness and he couldn't see her seeking darkness when he knew what lies beyond darkness is worth nothing.

His thought came to an abrupt stop when a connection was formed for telepathy.

"Abhay," Chand voice echoed in his head

"Dad?" Abhay got confused.

Why was his father contacting him so suddenly? Wasn't he in the house?
That reminded him Haseena didn't come with Piya dinner either.

It seemed no good news. A phantom of dread spread around Abhay and he froze.

What was the plan of night and game of darkness?
