Aamir Khan-Katrina DHOOM 3 impresses overseas audience with $10 m

A common charge levelled against the domestic cinema going audience by the so-called intellectuals is that the overseas cine goers are more evolved and have a good taste, unlike their Indian counterparts, who are yet to accept intelligent cinema. The voices assume a shriller note whenever a big commercial potboiler puts up huge numbers at the domestic box-office.

However the allegations sound hollow when the same film is wholeheartedly accepted in the foreign soils too. This has happened many times in the recent past, more so in 2013, and the latest to trash the above theory is the Aamir-Katrina starrer, DHOOM 3.

While DHOOM 3 (despite releasing on a working day) is all set to end the first week netting around 170-175 crore from India, a record establishing run, the Yash Raj Films' venture has rocked the overseas circuit too, putting up mind-boggling numbers.

Coming to the number crunching, DHOOM 3 has grossed a record breaking $10 m during the opening weekend (20-22 December). The film's business is not restricted to just one or two circuits but is spread across the continents, as given below.

During the opening weekend, the Vijay Krishna Acharya directed DHOOM 3 has grossed $3,500,000 from the US, 885,000 from UK, Aus$695,782 from Australia, NZ$218,000 from New Zealand, PKR 66,817,000 from Pakistan and AED10,310,000 from the UAE & GCC.

Well, given the above stats, we can infer two things; either the overseas audience too has a bad taste in cinema, or they, very much like the Indian audience, take cinema as an entertainment medium and not as an intellectually gratifying experience!
