Actor Rajpal Yadav has received some respite, at least until March 18. The Delhi High Court granted him interim bail on Monday in the cheque bounce case. This follows his surrender to the police on February 5, after he was unable to repay a debt of Rs 9 crore.
Following the court's order, the actor was held in Delhi's Tihar Jail. In the wake of his imprisonment, several members of the Indian film industry expressed their support and offered assistance in resolving his financial difficulties.
Rajpal Yadav’s manager on his bail
As the actor received the interim bail on February 16 after depositing ?1.5 crore, the actor's manager Goldie told HT, Yes, it's true that Rajpal sir has been granted bail. It is a matter of great joy and a happy day for us.
He added, He will soon hold a press conference to address the issue and talk about it. It will happen in a day or two. Till then we cannot say anything more.
Reports emerged on Sunday night suggesting that Rajpal Yadav didn't receive financial assistance from those who had promised to help. However, his assistant Goldie clarified that this wasn't the case. "No, that is not true. Several actors and people from the industry have come forward and helped Rajpal ji."
The clarification comes as a relief to fans and well-wishers of the actor, who have been rallying around him during his time of need. Goldie's statement highlights the support and solidarity that Rajpal Yadav has received from his colleagues and industry peers.
Case on Rajpal Yadav
Rajpal Yadav's financial woes began in 2010 when he borrowed Rs 5 crore from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to fund his directorial debut film 'Ata Pata Laapata'. However, the film failed to impress at the box office, leading to alleged repayment defaults. The dispute escalated into a prolonged legal battle, with a Magistrate court convicting Rajpal Yadav and his wife Radha in April 2018 and sentencing him to six months in jail. The Sessions Court upheld the conviction in 2019, prompting Yadav to appeal to the Delhi High Court. In June 2024, the High Court temporarily suspended his sentence, directing him to make genuine efforts to repay the nearly Rs 9 crore dues. However, the court revoked the suspension on February 2 this year, ordering him to surrender due to repeated failure to honor his repayment commitments.
