Pass the saas, please

Ekta Kapoor is dreaming beyond saas-bahu sagas now. She is set to roll cinema, TV and reality into one big project
There's one project that has Ekta Kapoor really excited. She says, "There's one really big project (that I'm co-producing with Sanjay Gupta) which will open up a new genre of cinema. I'll be bringing in cinema, TV and reality into one range of creativity. People will talk about it for a long time to come. Star Plus will be a very important part of that project."

Meanwhile, she has her hands full with film production, deciding her next move following Samir Nair's exit from Star and her new show Kayamath that starts this Monday. She has also just returned from Chennai after a visit to Tirupathi Balaji. "We walked to the temple. I haven't slept for 48 hours. But I've a new show starting on Monday. So I'm back at work," says Ekta.

Ekta Kapoor
The all-important question: Is she walking out of Star with Samir Nair? Apparently she's getting lusciously lucrative sums to switch channels. "Right now I'm not too sure about my next move. But yes, my association with Samir Nair at Star was to die for. I want to be part of any channel that Samir Nair moves to. I think Star is getting its act together. As soon as they do we'll have a better picture. But I've got lots of offers from Sony and other channels. I'm keeping my options open," she replies.

Ekta is also excited about her new show that will replace Kahin To Hoga. "It's a show called Kayamath. I had a super hit show by the same title on Doordarshan some years ago. The title suited my new show as Kayamath is about love that lasts till the end of time. It's based on a novel that I had heard about. I've got Sanjida from Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka and Shabbir Ahluwalia as the protagonists," says Ekta.

She speaks fondly of Iqbal Khan who recently left her production house. Ekta says, "I'm very fond of him. I was quite shocked when he left my show Kyun Hota Hai Pyarr. But I guess it was time for him to venture out into the real world. How much he needs me or I need him isn't the question."

The end of Kahin To Hoga means the end of Ekta's association with Amna Sharif. Ekta says, "I don't know whether we'll work together again in the near future. But it was a fruitful association. I'd definitely want to work with Amna again. At the moment she has a new show coming up on Sony. But you never know about the future."

That brings us to all the efforts that Ekta's breakaway creative director Sandeep Sickand has been making to out-manoueuvre Ekta through soaps galore on Sony Entertainment.

Ekta isn't being diplomatic when she says she hasn't seen any of Sickand's shows. "Where's the time? I haven't seen much of his work. I don't know what they're doing. The main aim is to garner TRPs. I think Zee is managing that job very well. They're getting the right amount of eyeballs," she says.

Kayamath- A journey from Friendship to Love

Panchi Bora, her girl next door looks have fetch her the role of sweet and docile Prachi in Kayamath. Pretty Panchi is an MTV find and one Balaji show old (Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi Hai. Just out of her teens, she has left her studies mid way to pursue the unresistable new show in hand. As homework, the actor was made to watch Parineeta, Ishq Vishq Pyaar Vyaar, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas to take lessons about friends turned lovers. So will the Prachi-Neev chemistry go down well with the viewers? ' Both of us have done ads earlier and I am positive our chemistry will work. The script is nice and it's an unusual love story where he is very outgoing while I am the shy girl for whom her father and Neev mean the world,' chirps Panchi. There was a funny incident while shooting which Panchi recalls smilingly. 'Jay and I had this scene together where he was holding my hand so tightly that my hand went black for almost a week. I kept complaining to everyone and hiding it with make up and my family was shocked to see this,' laughs Panchi. And what does she think about the tough task master, Ekta? ' Ekta is a hard working and encouraging boss. She's a positive person who placed immense faith in me and I am grateful to her for my first break.I always thought I'd finish studies and then join Balaji but they offered me this project which is amazing,' says an honest Panchi.

Panchi Bora

'Bollywood is not my cup of tea'

DHAVAL ROY

Panchi Bora is all set to soar high and touch stardom. In a plethora of wannabes making a beeline for Ekta Kapoor serials, Panchi may sound like just another starlet. But that's not the case. The young girl from Pune is the chosen one by Ekta herself for the new show Kayamath as the lead protagonist. Panchi never thought she'd be here. Currently in her second year studying English Honours in Pune, it was just a matter of chance that she got her portfolio clicked and it reached the right people. As she says, "They were doing a nationwide audition for Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi. I got selected along with 12 other girls." But then she clinched the deal! The show was on a small scale unlike all the other Ekta Kapoor shows but it did set the momentum for her. Though she didn't do any other show after that, she did bag quite a few commercials and in the meanwhile she was busy with studies.
Then she finally got the lead protagonist in Kayamath. "This is just my second show in the industry and with Ekta also. It's huge compared to Kitni Mast... Back then, I wasn't prepared for the kind of hardwork at all, but now I have mentally prepared myself," smiles the 19 year old girl. What has her most excited is that Ekta Kapoor has kept her promise. "When I was acting in Kitni Mast..., Ekta had liked my work and promised to give me another role. But then, I was concentrating on studies and she had too much work herself, so I didn't take it seriously. Then when the production house got in touch with me again, I was very pleasantly surprised," she says. And now Panchi wants to work hard and "live up to Ekta's expectations for giving me the opportunity." Kayamath is what is going to keep her occupied right now, and this 19-year-old girl has no Bollywood dreams. "It's not my cup of tea! I can't do all those kissing scenes and exposing," she says coyly. Moreover, her parents wouldn't let her do films. Panchi is a very religious girl, who seeks advice from her guruji before embarking on any new venture. Right now Panchi has shifted bag and baggage to Mumbai from Pune just a month back and stays with her parents. Ask her about any special someone and she goes beetroot red and says, "That's my personal life; I'm not comfortable discussing it in public."

Kayamath is a story about changing relationships and of everlasting Love.

Kayamath's story centers around Praachi - a simple girl with dreams in her eyes. Praachi believes in fairy tale romances and awaits her Prince Charming. In a world full of smart, confident and intelligent women Praachi comes across as a vulnerable and docile character.

She is a young sheltered girl who has never seen any struggle in her life. Praachi draws her strength from her father Inder Goenka and her childhood sweetheart Neev and is completely dependent on them.

Praachi and Neev are childhood friends, they love each other, but don't know about each other's feelings.

Praachi's life is completely transformed when on the day she is to get married to Neev, her father dies. As if the death of her father wasn't enough to shatter her dreams, she also learns of her father's illegitimate relationship with another woman and his other daughter Ayesha.

Circumstances change her life. The show is about Praachi's love and her life. Her life where she losses her most loved ones and her sacrifice for her loved ones...

Ekta Kapoor's new show 'Kayamath' to go on air from Feb 19
Mumbai | February 07, 2007 11:41:38 AM IST

Ekta Kapoor's new daily soap 'Kayamath' will go on air on Star Plus replacing her old serial 'Kahiin To Hoga' in the 2300 hrs slot from February 19. Kayamath's story centers on the character 'Praachi' - a simple girl with dreams in her eyes, believes in 'fairy tale' romances as she awaits her 'prince charming'. In a world full of smart, confident and intelligent women, Praachi comes across as a vulnerable and docile character. She is innocent, lovable, introvert, extremely homesick and very dependant on her father and best friend Neev. It is the story about Praachi's discovery of her love for Neev, and their journey from being just friends to being lovers or soulmates, said Ekta. Commenting on show's concept, STAR India Senior Creative Director Shailja Kejriwal said, ''Shows like 'Kasautii Zindagi Ki' and 'Kahiin To Hoga' have shown that simple love stories always find a place in the hearts of viewers. With 'Kayamath' coming at a primetime slot, our endeavour is to unfold an intense, passionate love story which carries a simple plot through its simple and relatable characters.'' The show's prime focus Praachi will be played by Panchi Bora.

The serial stars veteran actor Mohnish Behl as Praachi's father, and debutant Jay Bhanushali, who essays an important role of Praachi's best friend Neev, while actress Prachi Shah will be seen as Aarti (Praachi's mother) in the show. The cast also includes other important characters played by Shabbir Alhuwalia, Neena Kulkarni, Shenaz Patel, Suraj Thapar, Amita Chandikar, Mini Tiwari among others

Qayamat se Kayamath

Chaya Unnikrishnan
Posted online: Friday, February 02, 2007 at 0000 hours IST

It's the first 'K' serial of the year from Balaji Telefilms and STAR Plus. Kayamath, which will replace Kaahin To Hoga, is a love story with a tagline Main Tumhara Saath Nibhaungi Kayamath Tak. Starring Panchi Vora, who had made her TV debut with Balaji's Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi, will play Praachi and Jay Bhanushali will play her love interest Neev. The others in the cast include Monish Bahl, Prachi Shah, Neena Kulkarni and Shabbir Ahluwalia. The story is about two childhood friends Prachi and Neev who grow up with different aspirations. While Praachi is a simple and innocent girl who dreams that her fairy tale romance will come true, Neev does not believe in love, discounts the emotion and is very brash...

Sounds interesting but we think it's a show that could be aired between 8 - 9 pm where it could have caught on with the youngsters. What say?

Next Kashish-Sujal on the block?

Usha Thomas/Kshama Rao (HT Cafe)

Mumbai, February 6, 2007
</>

Ektaa Kapoor is at it again. The dreams of another aspiring star of tellywood will come true on February 19, when Balaji's first show for 2007, Kayamath, goes on air launching Jay Bhanushali.

With commercials like Lays (with Saif Ali Khan) and Motorola to his credit, Bhanushali is an acting greenhorn. "I was called for an audition from Balaji and was soon confirmed. I'm thankful to Ektaa for trusting me with the lead role," he says.

Kayamath is the love story of Neev (Jay) and Praachi (played by MTV find Panchi Bora). Talking about his character, Jay says, "Neev Shergill is a flirt and a fun-loving guy.

But both the protagonists are in quest of true love." How's the experience been? "The last three weeks have been very hectic. The work scenario's different compared to what it is in the ad world.

"There, you're pampered and your needs are taken care of, while in the TV industry, it's a daily grind," he says.

Kayamath also features veterans like Neena Kulkarni, Mohnish Behl, Prachi Shah and Shabbir Ahluwalia.

"Learning from Mohnish (who plays Panchi's father) is an experience in itself." We hope Bhanushali too receives the adulation that came the way of Rajeev Khandelwal, who debuted with Kahiin to Hoga, the show that Kayamath is replacing.

Panchi Bora, who first hit prime time television with Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi, is back after a yearlong hiatus. Ektaa Kapoor, who had earlier cast her in Kitni…, which was her first youth soap for MTV, has picked her this time as the female lead in Kayamath.

Born in Assam, Panchi also calls Pune her home because she studies at Fergusson College. Did she take a break to finish her studies?

She says, "Yes, my parents want me to finish my graduation. I am still in my second year but the project sounded interesting. Besides, the fact that it will be on Star Plus is another reason I said yes." And she didn't exactly twid dle her thumbs during her break. She did several commercial ads and was also the face of a hypermarket chain.

Speaking about her character of a Gujarati girl in Kayamath, she says, "I belong to a business family. In the story, I share a close friendship with Neev (Jay Bhanushali), though we're both opposites. We both feel deeply for each other but we never seem to realise it's love." So what's the conflict then? "I'm not telling you. There are plenty of twists and turns, as there are in a typical Balaji serial," she says.

Has she got used to the daily soap grind? Not fainted on the sets yet? She laughs, "No, not yet. My mother ensures I eat on time, there is constantly someone on the sets to look after me."

PROMISING FUTURE Panchi Bora
Her giggles give away her excitement. For, it is no short of a dream-come-true for her. Panchi Bora, who got her big break under the Balaji Telefilms' banner after winning a talent hunt, found yet another offer for a lead role from the well-known production house too good to be true. More than a year after featuring in Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi, the first ever soap to be aired on MTV, Panchi has now bagged the role of Praachi in Ekta Kapoor's brand new soap, Kayamath, to be aired on Star Plus from next week. Supportive parents "I am really thrilled. Though I am in the second year of my BA from Ferguson College in Pune, I couldn't refuse this offer as it was too good," says Panchi. All of 21, Panchi, after featuring in Kitni Mast... as Ananya, received several advertisement offers before she decided to take a break from work to finish her studies. But it has to wait for sometime now, and her parents, she says, are not complaining. "My parents have always supported me in this. Even my guru, who lives in Vasishtha Ashram near Guwahati, has asked me to go ahead with it," she says. Though originally from Assam, her father, after serving the Army for many years, settled down in Pune. Talking about her role in Kayamath, Panchi says, "Praachi is a simple girl, very shy and attached to her family. She is someone who believes in fairy tale romances and awaits her Prince Charming. She is unlike me in real life but I have learnt a lot about such people by observing my sister who is very much like Praachi." A Monday-to-Thursday soap, Kayamath will be slotted at 11 p.m., replacing Kahin Toh Hoga. "Ekta herself is on the sets, telling us what is expected of each one of us," says Panchi, who is shooting 12 hours a day these days to keep the daily rolling. Though she has nothing else in her kitty yet, the actress with high cheekbones and a beautiful smile is hopeful that Kayamath will give the right push to her career.
