How I spend my Sunday

For most of us Sundays mean getting up late, relaxing with family and friends and basically sitting around doing nothing. Is it any different for our TV stars? We find out by asking Hiten Tejwani (Karan from Kyunki) and Jai Bhanushali (Neev from Kayamat) how they spend their Sundays.

Hiten Tejwani
How my Sunday starts…
By waking up at 11.30 AM! I know it's very late so automatically breakfast is turned into lunch.

My Lunch includes…
Fish curry and roti, steamed rice made by Gauri. She is a very good cook.

In the evening…
We both prefer light snacks which includes sandwiches or we go to the restaurant as we both like Chinese. For Chinese cuisines, the best restaurant is Legacy.

My dinner includes…
A combination of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes which includes fish fry, prawns curry, paneer pasanda and roti.

Jai Bhanushali
How my Sunday starts…
I wake up around 10.30 AM! It's not late naa?

My breakfast includes…
Protein milk shake, bread butter

My Lunch includes…
I'm a foodie. I have four chapattis. I love paneer ki sabzi, steam rice and dal after that I prefer to have juice, especially strawberry.

In the Afternoon…
I sleep for at least 2 hours. If I am not sleeping I listen to music, basically I like hip-pop, romantic songs. My favourite song is from the movie Fanaa - "Chand Sifarish".

My Evening…
I like to party out with my friends. I often go to Poison Club in Bandra, Ra in Lower Parel. Among the television stars I like to go with Naman Shaw (Pushkar from Kasam Se), Ali Merchant(Bharat from Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii). Both these are my best buddies.

My Dinner…
I occasionally go to restaurants, but my favorite restaurant is Urban Tadka and Mainland China in Andheri. Both these have Punjabi and Chinese food. At my home in Ghatkopar, my mom makes simple Punjabi food which includes rajmah chawal and chole bature.

Anita-Eijaz get popular with their fans

Balaji's dearie stars, the svelte Anita Hasanandani and the dashing Eijaz Khan have been turning quite a delight as a jodi for viewers in Star's Kayamath. What adds to the charm is the fact that this onscreen duo from the Kavyanjali days is a couple in real life too!

But what's going to be disheartening for their fans is the fact that Anita-Eijaz are short-lived in Kayamath. Bole toh, they are just doing cameos and soon their characters will fade away from this daily.

Somehow, looking at the public affection enjoyed by this pair (going by the postings on our forums), we hope that the creatives of this late night Balaji show do cash in on their popularity. Let's hope soap queen Ekta gives them some more footage in the upcoming tracks.

'Ekta loved my smile'
By: Shaheen Parkar
March 9, 2007

new kid on the block: Jay Bhanushali
His face stares down from billboards across the city for Star's new show, Kayamath. Though he may be relatively unknown, Jay Bhanushali has done a bit of modelling before the arc lights beckoned. Jai is Balaji's latest discovery, and plays the lead character, Neev Shergill, in Kayamath.

"This is my first brush with acting," says Jay, who is currently seen in the Lays wafer ads with Saif Ali Khan. He received a call from Balaji out of the blue.
"They noticed me in a Rediff ad that I'd done, and one of the creative heads got in touch with me. I did a series of screen tests with them and landed a plum role in Kayamath."

Smiles to go

He adds that it was his smile that did the trick. "At least that's what I was told! Apparently, Ekta Kapoor loved my smile, so that was what clinched the deal. That apart, I worked hard for the look tests.''

A resident of Ghatkopar, Jay is a Mumbai boy. "I studied at the BPM School in Khar, as I formerly lived in Juhu. I later completed my graduation through correspondence," he claims.

His family is not connected to the entertainment world in any way. "I am the only one who always had this — as they say — filmi keeda, in me. I did not want to do a nine-to-five job. I began modelling and then Kayamath came my way. So it was a case of one thing leading to another."

About his role in the late- night drama, he says, "My character Neev is a Casanova. What is characteristic of him is his sense of humour.

There are some wonderful cracks that I make in the show. Neev believes in living life king-size and takes each day as it comes."

Fame fever

Though it is barely a few days since the show began, Jay has already been getting a taste of celebrity. "I was at the petrol pump when one of the attendants told me to reverse my car with care as there was another vehicle at the rear. He laughed and told me, "Nahin to kayamath aa jayengi!"

At the moment, shooting for this late-night drama leaves him barely time for anything else. "At the moment, there is no energy left to pursue anything."
Jay is single. So is he ready to mingle? "Where is the time?" he laughs.

Panchi finds college boring

Nevertheless, the leading lady of 'Kayamath' wants to do her MBA abroad

She was previously seen as Ananya in the show 'Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi'. Few endorsements later, Panchi Vora was approached by Balaji for 'Kayamath' (Star Plus) to play the role of Prachi.

Panchi vs Prachi
Panchi says, "Prachi is a simple, shy girl who is the apple of her father's eye. Her world encompasses her family and best friend (played by Jay Bhanushali)." She continues, "I'm confident as I am used to the camera. The entire team is like a family. Jay is very friendly and he is good-looking too." She further adds, "I am not as shy as Prachi. But yes I am family-oriented and have values like her. In fact, any girl can relate to her."

Star vs student
As a child Panchi never dreamt that she would act. Panchi says, "It just happened by chance when I auditioned in Pune for 'Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi'." Interestingly, Panchi is still studying and is presently doing her SYBA from Ferguson College in Pune. Panchi confesses that she is not missing college.

"I find it boring. But I want to do my MBA abroad. I'm also interested in mass media . I hope to become the creative head of Balaji someday," she laughs.

Mohnish's innings to end in Kayamath

Latest offering from Ekta's camp, Kayamath was just in it's blooming stage when suddenly news has poured in that the show's Mr. Dependable- ace actor Mohnish Behl will be soon knocked out.

As one of the actor, on anonymity terms has revealed, the story will reach a stage where Mohnish (who plays Panchi's father) finds out that Eijaz Khan (who is engaged to his daughter) is a fraud and a married man. This serves as a major blow which leads to his untimely death. Thereafter the show will shift gears to becoming a major tear jerker peppered with full on romance.

With fresh leads - Panchi Bohra and Jay Bhanushali in its casting list, the only thing most bankable about this love saga was the presence of Mohnish. And if one goes by the track, the script quite highlighted the beautiful bond between the father-daughter. Now if the show's going to do away with this angel (which really made the show stand out), Kayamath might just become another melancholic Balaji show.

Shabbir celebrates Janmasthami on Holi

No, he was not looking at the wrong month on the calendar but merely shooting for his introduction scene of Kayamath. The introduction was through Janmashtami celebrations in a chawl of Mumbai. The scene was shot over two days with 300 junior artistes, rain machines, lezim dance groups and a professional group. The scene required Shabbir Ahluwalia to go on top of the human pyramid and break the handi. Shabbir's childhood dream was coming true and was most excited. However, he could not wear elbow pads during the filming because the scene required him to be in a vest. The first couple of times was really difficult and he almost slipped down the pyramid hurting himself but he did not give up. After some time Shabbir was almost on the top when the pyramid collapsed like a pack of cards… all thanks to the slush caused by the water from the rain machines. But the whole unit kept cheering Shabbir ... made him feel like a real Govinda...and finally it worked. The pyramid was formed and the shot was captured.

Sanjeeda Sheik's appearance on Star's new show Kayamath surprised many of her fans. They couldn't understand why an actress who debuted in a lead role in Balaji's Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka has settled for not being the lead character this time round. When asked what made her take the role she says, "I admit that this is not a lead, but Ayesha, the character I am playing is a very strong-headed, stubborn, blunt and in your face kind of person. I can't reveal anything more apart from the fact that I play an important and strong character in the story."

Sanjeeda also says her character is paired with Shabbir Ahluwalia and their track will run parallel to the main lead. "We are childhood friends and live in the same colony, and Shabbir's character is similar to mine. He is a strong-headed, no-nonsense and outspoken guy," she adds.

But when asked if Shabbir is her love interest in the soap she goes mum and after a bit of prodding says, "Wait and watch. There is an interesting development coming in the story." Wonder what this twist is all about?

Anyways, she does appear very happy with her role because she confesses to giving up a couple of Telugu and Tamil movie offers for the serial. "Since Kayamath was in the offing I said no to films because shuttling constantly between Mumbai and Chennai or Hyderabad would have been a problem. In any case I am an easygoing person and I like to do limited but good work. To me quality rocks. I am content with doing one good show at a time," justifies the actress who took a long break after Nimo and holidayed in Udaipur, Jaipur and Chandigarh. She also did Harbhajan Mann's music video in between.

Apart from the one off video and holidays, there were strong rumours that Sanjeeda went under the knife to perfect her feature. But the actress denies getting cosmetic surgery. "I am not a newcomer and after doing Nimmo there was no need for surgery. The audience didn't dislike my face," says Sanjeeda. But she admits to getting some dental work done.

K 3, Gee!

Ekta plans a merger of three of her popular shows (Kahaani…, Kyunki… and Kayamath) to counter competition from Zee, 80 actors will star in the 90-minute special.

(l-r) Stills from Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi... and Kayamath

March 26 is a day of reckoning for Ekta's multi-tasking production company. On that evening Ekta slaps on a three-tiered soap-scoop merging three of her popular soaps Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kayamath rolled into one…(where the characters of the three soaps with meet and interact, and the three stories will be interlinked). This is being done to counter supposed competition from Zee.

If Zee thought putting on the three-pronged bahu-saga Teen Bahuraniyan, produced by Paresh Rawal, from March 26 was a fitting retort to Ekta Kapoor and Balaji's dominance, they hadn't reckoned with Ekta's competitive ingenuity.

Says Ekta, "This is the mother-merger among soap operas. We have 80 actors for the 90-minute special. We've done up three sets with the same look for three different shootings. Five directors will shoot over five days, 24 hours, for the three units of the special episode. All the creative heads have been assigned a job each. Six editing rooms at Balaji are ready to edit the material round-the-clock."

The entire Balaji office wears an ultra-festive look. It's as though they've just discovered the cure for a very rare virus. Says Ekta, "Yeah, there's a keeda in all of us at Balaji to excel. My creative heads like Nivedita Basu are burning the midnight oil for this merger-special. Our company has been split into five different functional departments to cope with the 90-minute special. We wanted to show Star that we can give them the mother of all soap operas. We want to do an episode that will be remembered for at least a year."

What Zee intends to do about this sudden revenue on their new soap-shopping plans is unclear. But one thing is for certain. Ekta Kapoor plans to retain the title of the queen of competitive creativity.

Star's primetime K-serials unite for mega episode

Indiantelevision.com Team

(21 March 2007 7:00 pm)

MUMBAI: In an attempt to ramp up activity on the channel, Star Plus has lined up a two day primetime programming treat for its viewers with an extended episode that will combine its biggest ratings drivers Kahaani…, Kyunki…. and Kayamath on 26 and 27 March from 10 pm - 11.30 pm.

Star India general manager - content and marketing Harsh Rohatgi says it will create a "visual spectacle," for which the channel is hoping to rake in its "infrequent and lapsed viewers onto the show" as the plots for the three stories will converge into one grand episode.

A refreshed programming initiative is primarily executed to create and retain the buzz on the channel, adds Rohatgi.

To build the hype off-air, a mutli-media campaign will break tomorrow on outdoor, radio and print.

Promising to unfold three big secrets, the theme will revolve around a party thrown by Parvati Bhabhi (from Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii) in which the families of Kyunki and Kayamath will be invited.

However, the question is whether the marathon episode will be able to keep viewers hooked? Rohatgi believes the creativity will surely sustain the viewers as Ekta Kapoor has roped 80 actors performing working round the clock for over five days and overseen by five directors and three units teams for the single episode.
