Kayamath
Known to give its viewers an interesting mix of programming, STAR PLUS once again brings forth a simple story of relatable characters in its new weekday primetime show-KAYAMATH. Replacing the successful show Kahin Toh Hoga in the slot, this unusual love story is Balaji Telefilms first presentation on the channel in the new year 2007 and will be aired starting - 19th Feb, Mon-Thurs, 11:00p.m, only on STAR PLUS!

Kayamath's story centers on the character 'Praachi' - a simple girl with dreams in her eyes, believe in 'Fairy Tale' romances as she awaits her 'Prince Charming'. In a world full of smart, confident and intelligent women Praachi comes across as a vulnerable & docile character. She is innocent, lovable, introvert, extremely home sick and very dependant on her father and best friend Neev. Kayamath is the story about Praachi's discovery of her love for Neev, and their journey from being just friends to being lovers or soul mates.

Commenting on show's concept says Shailja Kejriwal, Senior Creative Director of STAR India, "Shows like Kasautii & Kahiin To Hoga have shown time & again that simple love stories always find a place in the hearts of viewers. With Kayamath coming at a primetime slot our endeavor is to unfold an intense, passionate love story which carries a simple plot through its simple & relatable characters."

The show's prime focus Praachi will be played by Panchi Bora. Kayamath also stars veteran actor Mohnish Behl as Praachi's father, and debutant Jay Bhanushali who essays an important role of Praachi's best friend Neev, while actress Prachi Shah will be seen as Aarti (Praachi's mother) in the show. The cast also includes other important characters played by Shabbir Alhuwalia, Neena Kulkarni, Shenaz Patel, Suraj Thapar, Amita Chandikar, Mini Tiwari among others.

Kayamath - starting 20th Feb, Tuesday to Saturday at 21:30 (AEST) on Star Plus

Sooraj in a 'K' serial

It is surprising that inspite of being in the telly industry for so long, Sooraj Thapar hasn't got the opportunity to work with Ekta Kapoor. But very soon, Sooraj will make an appearance in Ekta's new show Kayamath. Says Sooraj, "This will be the first time I am working with her. And though they had offered me couple of shows in past, I could not accept any because either I had date problems or the role didn't quite interest me. This time there was no such issue thankfully!"

First time jitters

Facing a camera was nothing new to Jay Bhanushali who is making his tele-debut with Balaji serial Kayamath on STAR Plus. Still, the guy was nervous, "Kayamath is a Balaji show replacing Kahiin Toh Hoga... which has already reigned the hearts of many viewers. Secondly, this was my first daily soap and that too on a primetime slot of STAR Plus," recalls Jay who plays the character of Neev. Though he was aware who his co-star would be when it came to enacting an angry and aggressive scene where he had to hold his co-star Praachi's (Panchi Bora) hand tightly, he was so engrossed in reciting his dialogue that he didn't realise Praachi had tears of pain in her eyes. Her hand was being gripped in a vice by Neev. "I was embarrassed, the entire cast was looking at me in silence. I immediately apologised to her and lucky me... Panchi knew how nervous I was, she got me out of my guilt, not only that she also managed to give the same shot immediately though she was still in pain. I can never forget that incident and I shall always be grateful to her for being so patient with me..." gushes the latest entrant on TV. The series begins airing from February 19 at 11 pm.

'I don't have the traits of a casanova'

Meet Jay Bhanushali, the new kid on the telly-block

PRIYANKA SRIVASTAVA

This boy possesses the conventional good looks and is all set to make an entry into the soap operas. As the new show Qayamath airs, 22-year-old Jay Bhanushali prepares himself for stardom and hopes to become a household name soon.
After working for a short span in the ad world and being associated with some prominent brands, Jay is all set to play a happy-go-lucky character Neev in the new serial. "Neev is similar to what I am in real life, but I don't have the traits of a casanova."
With every second serial based on a love story, what's different about this one? "This is a romance between two very young people." But Kasauti zindagi kay and Kahin to hoga have been based on the same themes. "This one's different because of its freshness and appeal," Jay insists. "Moreover I'm excited to share screen space with established actors like Mohnish Behl and Shabbir Ahluwalia. He is unperturbed on realising that his plunge in the soap operas implies that he'll have to portray a father and grandfather figure when the serial takes a leap. "Well, the mere idea of playing an elderly character at my age leaves the adrenaline pumping, I can't wait to do that," he explains.
Jay says that the K-sagas are not losing their charm. "There is a target audience we cater to and the serials are receiving accolades from them." Not afraid to be typecast, he concludes, "It's too early to comment, I want my work to be noticed. I am not interested in starting my career with any pre-conceived notions," he emphasises.

Though he denies quitting Kahani... because Ekta didn't keep her promise of casting him in the lead role of Jai Walia in Kasamh Se, Mohnish Behl certainly seems to be regretting his decision since his film career is going nowhere. Ever since he debuted with Sanjivani in early 2002, TV has been his best option to keep the actor in him going and cash flowing his way. Of course Kasamh Se would have been a boon for his career on TV but Kahani... was not bad either. But then what has happened can't be undone and Mohnish has apparently realised that he needs to be cordial with the Balaji banner as this is where most of the happening prime time shows are planned and made.

This is why he is doing a 25-episode cameo in Ekta's new show Kayamath. Mohnish says Ekta and Shobha Kapoor convinced him to do the role and as a goodwill gesture on his part he agreed to do the brief appearance as female lead Prachi's father. Otherwise Mohnish has no work in hand as he has finished shooting for Vikram Bhatt's film Life Mein Kabhie Kabhie. "I have completed 25 years of my acting career and imagine in the silver jubilee year I am jobless," he says in a lighter vein and then adds in a serious tone, "I am really looking for some good work."

Ask him if he's is looking forward to work with Balaji and he says, "We have been discussing two or three shows but things are so fluid in television that you can't say anything for sure."

When it comes to making some quick money professional commitment can take a back seat. But not for Suraj Thapar who said 'no' to a commercial as it would clash with the dates of his play which was to be staged in Dubai. "I had to shoot in Australia for three days. But since I has already committed to a show and there was no way I could have reached Dubai before the show I said 'no' to a commercial which would have given me Rs 5 lakh in three days flat," says Suraj whose next play with Lillete Dubey is titled The Perfect Wife. "It's being written and we should start rehearsing from next month," he informs. Meanwhile Suraj who is doing Kayamath, his first show with Balaji, is also now looking at doing a comedy.

She is a trained Kathak dancer. She not only does regular professional dance shows but also conducts dance classes for a group of students at her home. Meet Prachi Shah, perhaps the only actress on television, who works solely on her own terms. "Dance is my first priority," says Prachi whose second priority apparently is her husband. No wonder she doesn't work on Sundays. And on weekdays she shoots only between 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. What's more, even Ekta has agreed to her condition because her association with Balaji is as old as Ekta's first prime time blockbuster show Kyunki... Till her marriage a year ago, Prachi says she used to work a lot. "I have done double shifts, worked in the night, packed up early morning and returned to the sets in the evening. But I can't do it anymore. Ekta understands my problem and she has agreed to my condition of working only for 12 hours," says Prachi.

Having started her career with Kahin Diya Jale Kahin Jiya, her first show with Balaji was Kundali. But almost simultaneously she started doing Kyunki and since then Balaji has become her professional home. "It's an emotional attachment," she says though she admits that there is pressure when you do two dailies. Six months ago Prachi replaced the tantrum-spewing Nan-dini Singh as the protagonist of Kesar and now she is doing Balaji's new show Kayamath. "I couldn't say no to Ekta," she confesses.

Another reason for doing Kayamath is the role. "It's a nice role of a sweet, simple and innocent wife, bahu and mother who has an excellent understanding with her husband. Aarti is not a weak woman but she will never take a decision without her husband's consent, unlike Kesar who is a very strong woman and has totally control over her life," she adds. "What I like about these shows is that they are value-based stories and the two families they revolve around have come up the hard way."

Prachi is satisfied with the way her career has shaped up. "It has been an excellent journey. I want to do good work. But I also want to live good life by giving myself enough time to be with my husband and family."
