Big Splash, no ripples

They launched with a bang, but have left nary an aftershock on viewers' psyche.

They had a mine of promotions to cash in on and make a name for themselves, but somehow popularity and recognition has evaded these TV folk. Here's a look at those who could have been stars, but got relegated to the category of has-beens.

Vinod Singh - As the desi Doogie Howser, Aayushman could not have asked for a better launch pad. Just four months after the launch of the Sony serial, Vinod buckled under. Although he had not created many ripples as a teenage medico prodigy, Vinod claimed long working hours had taken a toll on him. So much so, that he took to throwing tantrums at events, and bashed up a crew member on the Cinevistaas' sets. The producers didn't waste much breath before replacing him with small time model Sudeep Sahir.

Rakshak - Remember the original Kkavya? We don't blame you if you don't. Rakshak, a crew member in B R Films, was spotted by a Balaji camp member and offered the role opposite Natassha. "I dreamt of films, films and only films. I wanted to earn my first break in a Karan Johar film. But destiny had other plans," the guy had said at the time of the show's launch. But obviously, having his voice dubbed and affording him 25 takes per shot proved a little tedious for the fast paced Balaji Telefilms. The production house admitted, while replacing him with the tried-and-tested Eijaz Khan, that Star Plus had spent a lot on promoting Rakshak, and that bringing in another Kkavya was not an easy decision.
Rakshak is back in television wilderness, albeit with a promise that he will be back, bigger and better. We hope so too.

Panchi Bora - This army brat was chosen out of hundreds of aspirants when she was in the second year of college by Balaji and MTV's star hunt and selected to play the lead in the music channel's first soap venture Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi. The show had an offbeat story, a youth centric feel and was expected to jumpstart Panchi's career and launch her as MTV's first soap star. Unfortunately, it didn't create even a ripple and Panchi's now back to her studies, without getting the chance to feature in MTV's next, unlike her co-stars.

Reena Kapoor - It's not her first serial, but as Rani, the protagonist of SaharaOne's Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki, she had enviable publicity on outdoor hoardings all over the metros. She could have achieved the heights that Bhagyashree did with the Rajshris' Maine Pyaar Kiya, but thus far, hasn't done anything to endear herself to viewers.

Namit Das - He has a sweet boyish face and a charming twinkle in his eye. As Pancham, the chief protagonist of the Zee afternoon show, he had it in him to make a name for himself like Nitish Bharadwaj did for himself as Krishna. The supernatural powers invested in the character have however done no good for Namit, who's as unknown as he was nearly a year ago.
Is Zee to blame?

THE SILENT TORPEDOES

Now for the ones who received hardly any push from the channel, but have clicked nevertheless to become brand names on their own.

Rajeev Khandelwal - No one expected female viewers to sit upto almost midnight to catch a glimpse of this intense looking hunk. But for over two years, Rajeev, with a little help from co-star Aamna, carried the show almost single-handedly on his broad shoulders. He's quit the show now, but still has his loyal fans tuning in to Zee's Time Bomb to see him in his new avatar.

Nausheen - She was the quintessential 'aam ladki' of television, with hardly any glamorous makeup and snazzy wardrobe. But Nausheen quickly made her mark with her unmistakable on screen chemistry with co star Anuj Saxena. Nausheen's left the show last year to shift to Star's Kalcchakra, and Sony's Kkusum has had two more Kkusums since then. But point out Nausheen to any couch potato and the recognition will be an instant Kusum!

Mona Wasu - Playing maid is hardly the kind of dream debut one would hope for, but Miilee with the broom and duster in hand, have still managed to win hearts. Some good acting coupled with a spontaneously boisterous personality should ensure that Mona goes a long way in tellydom.

Oh so boring!

A TV image of Tulsi of Kyunki and Parvati of Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki in Ekta Kapoor's special episode on Star Plus last night
For more than two weeks now, Ekta Kapoor has been flooding the media with news of the unravelling of mysteries of three of Balaji's prime time shows — Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (KSBKBT), Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii (KGGK) and Kayamath (a toddler compared to its counterparts, though expected to run for at least another two generations).

The concept

The marathon episode, which was being touted as the 'biggest' conglomeration on the Indian telly circuit, involved Parvati of KGGK trying to solve the mystery of a skeleton, which only Tulsi of KSBKBT could help her with.

To crack the case Parvati aka Janki Devi throws a party which is organised by the demure Prachi of Kayamath. It is during Paravati's party that she will discover her father's dark past.

And everything is possible in an Ekta detergent drama, oops, soap opera! When Ba can survive four generations, it's not surprising to have three entirely different stories suddenly come together.

What happened?

Aroona Irani performing
The mega episode began with images of all the Hindu deities, followed by Balaji's signature triple close-up style, jarring background music and sepia special effects.

Rape victim Krishna Tulsi (Mouni Roy) lived up to the legacy of being hysterical and over-the-top and the otherwise spunky Dakshaben's scenes were drab.

There was much dance and drama, with Aroona Irani on the dance floor and Panchi Bora (Prachi) and Jay Bhanushali's (Neev) romantic moves.

The plot dragged and the mysteries unravelled in installments, leaving us bored to tears.

And since Ekta, like Karan Johar, believes in getting her close pals into the act, we had to bear with Mushtaq Sheikh jigging with Tassnim Sheikh and Mita Vashisth.

All in all, our verdict is: nothing in the marathon episode was worth spending two hours on.

Saint's Halo v/s Satan's Horns
In a world pacing faster towards capital pragmatism, how sensible is it to be nave, trusting and a believer in being good and doing good? Narrowing on our chosen TV world, where nothing but the centre stage really counts, how wise is it to be nice? We asked our stars what would they prefer to hone? The Saint's Halo or the Satan's Horns?

Jay Bhanushali: "I am a naughty Satan. Yes, one needs to be a little bit bad and practical to survive competition. Every actor is a very mean guy, he may not accept it. For example there are a few shots and their face is not visible, they will crib about the fact that … no, my angle is not like this; my face is not being seen." Would you not want to hoard the screen? "I love the centre stage, I want to be the main person who is doing all the funny scenes the emotional parts, in between I was doing 12 scenes in an episode and I was in all of them. I was very trilled with that and I am very mean in that sense I should be every scene of the serial as Kayamath is my serial!"

We recommend: Don the horns… you are such envy!

Jai Bhanushali (Neev) goes to Siddhivinayak temple!

Jai Bhanushali who plays the fun-loving Casanova Neev (Kayamath) has a spiritual side to him that few know about.

The lead actor of Kayamath went to Siddhivinayak temple this Thursday to show his gratefulness to the Lord Ganapati for making his show popular and him a household face.

"I have visited Siddhivinayak several times before and I'm a great devotee of Ganeshji. When I was signed for Kayamath in the lead role I walked for 20 kilometers barefoot from my house at Ghatkoper to Siddhivinayak temple. I did this with the prayer that my show would do well and that I would become a success. I also made a mannat to God that the next time I come back to the temple I would come in a car. My prayers have been answered; the show has been appreciated and Neev, my character, has many female fans. Now after a very hectic schedule I am getting the time to visit this beautiful temple again. Moreover I have come here in my car!" said a very grateful Jai. We can only hope Lord Ganesha continues to fulfill all of his wishes.

Jai character Neev in Kayamath is a flirty, playful guy who may have many girlfriends but also cares a lot for his family and friends. Even though he is a ladies man he only truly loves his best friend Prachi (Panchi Bohra).

Mohnish won't wait Kayamath tak
By: Vickey Lalwani
April 2, 2007

The actor opted out of the show after his role was stretched beyond the required period; Ronit Roy will replace him

I'm Off: Mohnish Behl

Mohnish Behl is out from Ekta Kapoor's Kayamath, which recently went on air on Star Plus.

Ronit Roy will now play Behl's role of Inder Shah — father of the leading lady Prachi (played by Panchi Bora).

Behl has quit the show three days back and Roy will make an entry some time this week.

Prior commitment

Behl had been told that he would be required only until March 31. His character was supposed to die by that time, but the role got extended.

When contacted, Behl confirms that he is not doing the show anymore, "I had given dates to Balaji until the end of March. In April, I have other commitments.

Main Hoon Naa: Ronit Roy

I have signed two films with Vikram Bhatt. Plus, I have to complete one old film, co-starring Sunil Shetty and Raveena Tandon.

Also, I have to attend an art auction to be held in Hyderabad."

Behl says he would have loved to continue but then he would have to put his other projects on the backburner.

"That would have been unprofessional. If my role had gone as per the original plan, I would have completed my part by now.

Since there were a few creative changes in the initial stages of the show, I had to re-shoot some of my scenes. This, in turn, stretched the role beyond March-end."

Can't say no

Nivedita Basu, the creative head of Kayamath says, "We had no problems with Mohnish. He had clearly told us that he would be available for a short period of time. We have chosen Ronit Roy, who will also do a very good job."

Says Roy, "I am cool doing Kayamath. I think I'll be there for approximately 15 episodes. Plus I am doing Kyunki... and Kasautii Zindgii Kay. If it's a Balaji show, I can never say no. Balaji is family to me."

W inning at an award function has turned sour for creative direc- tor Ektaa Kapoor and her long- time trusted director Anil V Kumar. Balaji Telefilms bagged many awards at the first Sansui Awards, held a month ago, in Mumbai. In the popular cate- gory, it took home the Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Serial (Producer) and Best Director trophies. Yash Chouhan and Talat Jani, who are currently han- dling Kasamh Se (Zee), won in the Best Director category . It was this nomination that created bad blood between Anil V Kumar and Ektaa Kapoor. It's widely known that Kumar was the director who devised Kasamh Se. The exclusion of his name from the nomination was the starting point of the conflict. It seems he confronted Kapoor and asked why she had- n't given him his dues for direct- ing the serial and contributing to it in the initial stages. Kapoor had nominated Kumar's name for Karam Apna Apna in the Jury Awards for Best Director. B.P Singh, the director of CID (Sony) won the award in that category . Apparently, Kumar had a major showdown with his boss and returned to work a dejected man. It seems Kumar's anger reflected in his work and one day he left midway while shoot- , ing an important scene for Kayamath (Star Plus). The scene marked the entry of Shabbir Ahluwlalia. Kapoor heard of this and fired Kumar for unprofessional behaviour. He claimed that he'd make it on his own talent and left in a huff. He confirmed the news that he is no longer a part of Balaji Telefilms. "You have the facts right but I'm not going to say anything against Ektaa," he stated Does he attribute his growth as a professional and success to Balaji Telefilms? To that, he conceded, "I was a spot boy who joined this industry in 1992. It was a chance meeting with Ektaa at Shirdi that gave me the opportunity to work with the team. I owe everything to Bala- ji. Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii (Star Plus) was the first serial that I directed." This was followed by Kkusum, Kahiin Toh Hoga, Karam Apna Apna, Kayamath and the movie Kuch Toh Hai, among many others. Like all drop-outs from Bala- ji, Kumar too, has met Sony's creative head Sandiip Sik- cand. It seems that he has been offered the direction of Jeete Hain Jiske Liye. A source informs that Kumar has regretted his behaviour and has apologised to Kapoor. Kumar said, "I wouldn't like to say anything. I should announce my next venture in a month's time." Meanwhile, Kapoor said, "Anil is still with us. I haven't fired him. He's one of our most talented directors." Is this the end of a seven-year association or is there a patch- up in the offing? usha.thomas@hindustantimes.com

Bharat Arora
Mountain model: At 6 feet 3 inches, 24-year-old Bharat Arora (better known as the Mountain Dew dude) is synonymous with ramp shows. Delhi stylists Jojo and Yatan once randomly asked him to do a print photo shoot for choreographers Aparna and Tanya. Thus, that was the model's first step into glamourdom.
Telly tubby: Bharat was first spotted in a cameo role for a TV show called 'Remix', post which he suddenly upped and relocated from Mumbai to Delhi A self-confessed 'mamma's boy', he claimed he was homesick and hence the sudden move. Realising the pastures are greener in Mumbai, Bharat moved back and nabbed a role in 'Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii'. From one lucky K to the other, Bharat is now currently shooting for 'Kahiin Toh Hoga.' "I was told that Ektaa Kapoor is a slave driver, but she's actually warm, friendly and a workaholic with no time limit. It's fantastic to work with her as her energy is contagious," says the charming Balaji find.
Independence rocks: Bharat's most memorable shoot was for last year's Independence issue cover of a weekly magazine, along with two other models. "The photographer wanted a serious yet festive look with a lot of gusto, but we were just not getting it right. Then someone got a brainwave and put on 'Kajra Re' and gave me a dholak. I played the dholak and my 10kg sherwani was drenched in sweat by the end of the shoot. But the results were outstanding," smiles Bharat, who can also be seen in ads for Yamaha, Hutch, Pantaloons, Motorola, etc.
Wild at heart: Besides modelling and acting, Bharat enjoys trekking. He also loves watching international cinema. This Sagittarian is a big fan of dark, intense films and eventually would love to star in non-commercial type of film like 'Omkara'.

Mum's the word!
Model Bharat Arora has no qualms in admitting that he is the apple of mother Punam's eye

Model Bharat Arora and his mother Punam Arora live in different cities — he in Mumbai, she in Delhi. Ever since Bharat moved to Mumbai and started working round-the-clock in television serials, and juggling his advertising and modelling assignments (for print and the ramp), the mother-son duo has been able to catch up only when Bharat returns fleetingly to Delhi. Occasionally his mother travels to Mumbai to spend time with him. The model — best known as the Mountain Dew dude — has done ads for Yamaha, Hutch, Pantaloons and Motorola; and is currently acting in Ektaa Kapoor's Kahiin Toh Hoga. But time and distance hasn't changed much and the model-actor insists that he is very much a mamma's boy.

Bharat:

I have had a mixed upbringing — spankings from my father, and complete indulgence, on the other hand, from my mother. This did help in a balanced childhood. Even now, the kind of person I am — pampered and carefree — is all thanks to my mother. I was a very mischievous kid. In fact I was quite notorious and did dangerous things like swinging from the pelmets when I was barely three. Of course, the pelmet came crashing down and to this day, I have a scar on the bridge of my nose to remind me of that incident. Even in such extreme cases, my mother would always be the first to take care of me and chide me later. With my father it was the other way around.

While I was growing up, late-night parties were an issue at home. My mother would, of course, help to cover up for me.

I have always been comfortable with sharing my problems and secrets with her. To this day, my best friends are aware of the fact that I discuss stuff with her, that I don't sometimes tell them. I am 24-years-old and yet I am not embarrassed to say that when I go back home, my mother actually feeds me home-cooked food with her own hands!

We try to catch up on lost time by visiting each other as much as possible. I do visit Delhi very often. If I go to Delhi for the fashion weeks or on modelling assignments, I stay on to be with my family. I try and spend festivals like Diwali with them as well. Last month I was shooting in Jaipur, which is just a three-hour drive from Delhi, and I made sure that I stopped by for a few days. For my mother or me, neither of us is really far away from each other.

I admire my mother as she is one of the most compassionate and giving women I've come across. My father too, swears by her giving nature — even after 25 years of marriage, he says, this remains unchanged. And everyone around her seems to do the same. She smiles even during the most trying times.

Even my friends are comfortable with discussing their problems with her. For instance, there's my friend, DJ Iggy in Delhi, whose mother is in Goa. Whenever he misses her or wants to talk to someone, he heads to my home and spends time chatting with my mother. She is truly a person who can make you feel warm even in the coldest phase of your life.

Punam:

The fact that Bharat is now away from home does make me sad at times. When he left for Mumbai to be part of a television show, Remix, I was so upset that for days I was prone to sudden tears. He too realised how anxious I was about him. And so as not to worry me, every time he fell sick he'd call his sister instead of me and ask her to consult the doctor without my knowledge.

There are things that are not bought in this house now that Bharat is in Mumbai. For instance, he loves bananas and rajma cooked by me. It must seem radical to some, but I refuse to either cook the dish or get bananas into the house. These things only remind me of his absence.

When I visited him recently in Mumbai, we had a great time. He took me to the famous Siddhi Vinayak temple and we went strolling along Chowpatty among other things. Whenever he comes home, I spend lot of time in planning the menu and try and prepare all his favourite dishes like sarson da saag, gajar ka halwa and panjiri.

I have always tried to be a mother and a friend at the same time. Which is, perhaps, why he confides in me about everything. I have also consciously shielded him from my husband's strictness. I remember the time when after learning how to drive, he took the car out one night. His father was taken aback by the fact that the car was missing from the garage at night. I had to convince him that the driver had taken it to run an errand.

His father has always had reservations about Bharat attending late-night parties. But I made sure Bharat could go out and have fun. The best part is that my son understands me completely. So the minute I'd call him and ask him to return home, no matter how much he was enjoying himself, he'd make it a point to come back immediately.

As a child, though, Bharat was very naughty. The moment we'd buy him a toy, he would take it apart and then try to put it back together. Applying the scissors to our curtains was another passion with him. Now that very son is gracing the pages of magazines and walking the ramp. There have been occasions that have touched me immensely. For instance, with his first pay cheque, Bharat took me to Satya Paul and bought me designer saris. And then on my birthday, both he and my daughter bought me a diamond nose-pin. These are moments that I have cherished.

It makes me proud that my son is a model and that he doesn't accept anything from us and insists on making his own living. But yes, I do want him to go that extra mile and achieve something more in life.

Sanjeeda can't wait to buy her laptop

With their constant traveling and choc a block schedules, television stars have hardly any time. It's no surprise then that they do everything on the run and that's probably the main reason why many stars like Ronit Roy, Manav Vij and Vikas Manktala all have laptops which they take with them everywhere.

Sanjeeda Sheikh is also feeling the need to keep in touch the tech savvy way. The former Nimmo from Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka? is looking out to purchase her own portable computer very soon.

"I want to buy a laptop but because I'm so busy I keep getting delayed. I really want to buy one very soon and when I do, it will be the latest model like the Lenova."

The actress wants only the best and is willing to spend up to Rs 50,000 on her new purchase saying, "I want to buy the Compaq which Shah Rukh Khan advertises for. I will buy the best there is in the market."

The laptop is much needed as Sangeeda doesn't have a PC at home either:

"All my friends have computers but I don't so that's why I'm buying my laptop. I will take it to the sets with me and in the breaks I will chat with my college friends and cousins. I'm quite net savvy and I like surfing through entertainment sites which have film gossip. I also plan on downloading the latest Bollywood and Telegu songs." says an excited Sangeeda.

The actress is presently seen in yet another Balaji show Kayamath where she plays Ayesha.

These youngsters had a common dream, a career in showbiz. After the initial struggle, they've managed to bag interesting roles and are all set to make a mark on TV

Amrapali Gupta

She has been around for some time but has not tasted success. Amrapali Gupta who did theatre in her hometown Lucknow before she came to Mumbai two and half years ago did secondary roles in shows like Reth and Pyaar Ke Do Naam but her struggle continued to play central characters. "I quit my studies for acting and struggled a lot for good work. But now it seems for sure that things are settling down for me," says Amrapali who plays the youngest bahu Bindi in Teen Bahuraniyaan. "Bindi is naughty and bubbly young girl who gets married into a big family. Her problem is that she can't live in a joint family which makes her more self-centered and gradually she starts turning negative," says the young actress who is also into music videos.

Vineet Raina

His passion for acting brought him to Mumbai from Jammu three years ago. With no contacts and no relatives, Vineet Raina had to struggle a lot for work. "I struggled for everything, for money, work and my survival here. I didn't even have enough money to pay for my portfolio pictures and got them done at a very low cost and then went for auditions," he recalls. He remained jobless for eight months after his debut show Mulk. "My real struggle started after doing Mulk. I didn't have money for food and went without dinner sometimes," he says. Though he did shows like Tum Bin Jaaoon Kahan, Maryada and Sati Satya Ki Kahani Vineet says he failed to come into the limelight.

What he was really looking for was a lead character in a big show. And that came his way when he got Maayka where he plays Veer Khurana, an IPS officer, who marries Raji Malhotra after a series of ups and downs. "The show started with our love story and since then it's been one happy journey for me. Veer is a nice and humble guy who is both serious and fun loving. It's an excellent role with a range of emotions to perform. I think patience pays and Maayka is the kind of show I was waiting to do," says Vineet.

Panchi Bora

She makes a perfect pair with Jay Bhanushali in Kayamath. A Balaji discovery she had done a youth show called Kitni Mast Hai Zindagi which ended in four months. She was a young student then studying in Pune where she appeared for a Balaji audition. "They were doing a nationwide audition and I got selected along with 12 girls," recalls Panchi who finally clinched the deal and went on to do the youth show. Though the show that was telecast on MTV didn't make Panchi famous, it helped her get noticed in the ad world. She went back to her studies and at the same time did a few commercials.

Ekta, who had promised her another good role, called Panchi to play the role of Prachi in Kayamath. She accepted the offer immediately. "This is my second show and I am taking it very seriously," smiles Panchi.

Jay Bhanushali

Most love stories turn into family dramas when TRPs start rising. Like Kahiin To Hoga, Kayamath may also go the same way. But that's for the future and Jay Bhanushali who plays Neev in Kayamath has no clue about what course the story will take eventually. But the popular model-turned-actor is excited about his debut show. "Neev is an interesting character — today's young guy, a go-getter, flirtatious and doesn't believe in love. Prachi is his best friend but he doesn't think he loves her. But a situation arises which makes him realise his true feelings for her," says Jay who is enjoying working with co-actress Panchi Bora. "We share an excellent on-screen chemistry."

Acting was never on Jay's mind. "I was having a good time doing commercials which is just about a couple of days' work in a month. But I guess as a logical progression to modelling, acting had to happen one day and it happened with Kayamath. It's a good show and it has made me quite popular in three months."

For Jay working on a daily basis is a different ball game. "Modelling is less work and more fun. But here it is non-stop work from morning to night. The days are very long. But I am working hard to make a name for myself and my family is proud of me," he adds.

Shalini Chandran

She's from Jamshedpur and dreamt of becoming an actress since childhood. "I used to watch a lot of films and television and would often tell my parents that I would be an actor one day," remembers Shalini Chandran who after finishing her graduation went to Delhi for a course in acting. After her acting course she shot for a short film in Delhi where she also met the man of her dreams, Mahesh Kumar and got engaged to him. The duo came to Mumbai in September last year. On a close friend's advice Shalini walked into Sankaraman Studios, which is a home to a lot of Balaji shows and gave an audition. A look test and mock shoot followed and Shalini walked into Kahani's new generation in November last year where she plays Maithali. "It's one of the lead roles in the new generation," beams Shalini.

Rinku Ghosh

Don't mistake her for a small town belle that she plays in her debut show Durgesh Nandini. She's a city-bred girl and a model too. In fact, such was her fascination for glamour and showbiz that while she was doing her undergrad she made the rounds of advertising agencies for a break in modeling. And when she got a break in modelling she sidelined her studies and barely managed to complete her graduation. Besides modelling, she was very keen on doing serials. "Television is a huge medium and TV stars are as popular as film stars," she smiles. It wasn't difficult for her to get a break in serials, thanks to her model coordinator who is also a casting agent for serials. It didn't take long for the producer of Durgesh Nandini to call Rinku for an audition and give her the role.

Jeetu Malkani

Son of a lawyer he wanted to pursue law. But soon he realised that law was not his cup of tea. Acting seemed to be a better option for him and he started doing theatre. Alongside acting he tried his luck in modeling but found it too painful. "It's a very long queue out there and the auditions are painful," says Jeetu. He tried for a break in films but was not lucky. He was not at all keen on doing serials. "I had this impression that serials are too boring. They keep you so busy that you don't get time for yourself. But I was proved wrong when I started doing Kahani. You get to learn so much about camera angles and technical details that I feel TV is the best training ground for an actor," says Jeetu who plays the new generation's lead character Pranay in the Balaji show.

"He is a philosophical guy and has a very clear thought process. Since he wants to be a writer he admires his publisher Malishka though he also has a soft corner for Maithali. The character started on a boring note and was on the sidelines for a long time because the focus was on Parvati. But now Pranay is in full flow and the character will hog lot of limelight," says Jeetu, who feels he has made a perfect debut on TV.
