A cake has normally more than one layer. Similarly love also has more than one layer.

The top layer in a cake (icing) is normally the decorative layer. The phrase "icing on the cake" means its something that makes a good situation even better. When candles are added to the cake, it is make the cake look more prettier. But if the candles melt, the wax from the cake will only impact the icing. The icing on the cake can be removed without it impacting the below layers of the cake and the cake is still good to go. Now if the base layer of the cake is horrible and the icing was used to make the cake look good. Then the entire cake need to be thrown away.

Similarly with love, if the love is deep rooted, genuine, honest, the wax from the candles are the like the problems, MUs, fights, that one faces in a relationship. This would touch only the top layer..i.e. we face the problems but it would not affect the love in the relationship. But if the "love" itself is selfish, dishonest, shallow, then the "wax" from the problems in life will affect the love.

So depending on the base layer of the cake, we determine whether the cake was spoilt or not.
