You are a great writer, and there is something compelling about the journal form that you have chosen because it has a great public appeal. Narratives written in the first person tend to draw the reader into the story in a manner that is easy for them to identify with the character, and since you have a good handle on the psyche of the lead characters whose views you express, this mode is very successful.
