I am sure many people watched the movie and really enjoyed it and it also got amazing reviews, I also enjoyed it. I loved the movie because of the performances, background score, locations and the beautiful message it sends(that love is the most important thing and that one doesn't need to speak or hear to love someone even though the message has been used by many filmmakers in the past, even anurag had the exact same theme in kites).

After watching the movie I asked myself one thing "this movie has everything but expect for story". I loved all the flashbacks and the love story between barfi and shruti. I also loved the part where we got to know that barfi and jhilmil knew each other from childhood. My only problem was the second half, it was the second half which became stupid and not logical, I mean the whole kidnaping of jhilmil by her father was so stupid and how her school also participated in it. I hated that part because that situation is done by bollywood too death. The lack of story made the 2nd very long and boring. I got first engaged in the story again when shurti gets to know that barfi now only loves jhilmil. And the whole old look was also very stupid, I wish the movie just ended when barfi and jhilmil got married, the ending made it very cheesy.

What do you guys think? Did Barfi lack story?

I agree with you, Puffy. I got a huge headache toward the middle of the movie. I was like, WHERE THE HELL IS THIS GOING?

And the movie has a lot of flaws, the first of them being the fashion. It was the 70s to 80s setup and people barely wore colorful gaudy dresses and bell bottom pants. Weird!

Yes the middle half was clearly the weakest because it went out of content, they should have avoided the kidnaping and the whiole old look.

Yup it had many flaws especially the fashion, see the 1978 part where the officer is wearing RAY Ban 2012 sunaglasses in 1978 😆

Yes I did sweety watch the movie asap it's a good 1 time watch movie. You can watch it with your family or friends. I loved ranbir's performance, his best performance ever it reminded me of his APKGK role. I also loved shurti and the ranbir-shurti pairing was amazing, the direction was also amazing and so was the background score. my only problem was the story.

Spoiler alert.
I have a slightly different take, in that i thought the story was perfectly fine. I thought the second half was better than the first half, actually.
I thought the movie was trying to make the point that it is not necessary that one has to be "normal" to be in love, to care for someone else, and to be with that person no matter what. Sometimes, seemingly normal and well-off people can have mundane or sad lives, while two people, who may seem "pitiful" to outsiders, can find their own enchantment within a very mundance world. Most people would see Barfi and Jhilmil to be pitied, as people who cannot be very happy, and at the most can aspire to some care. But it is they who find love, magic, a world of their own. And it is the normal people who turn out to have the most limited lives, because they limit their own selves by their inability to see, to imagine that which is different from the ordinary.

Do you think ready, housefull2 etc had stories 😆

These are called plots. Of course every movie would have a basic plot but story is something else which very few movies have these days!

I think it had a story, albeit very simple. I think that was one of reasons Anurag relied on the back-and-forth narrative, because the movie would be have been too simplistic otherwise.
There are a few movies that are largely about feelings and relationships, Barfi was one of them. The plot was woven around the emotional content, I felt.

Also, not everyone wore gaudy clothes in the 70's/80's. Ileana's clothes were aptly retro lol
