Life Mein Kabhi Kabhi...
*About two and half weeks after college started*
"Heyy!" Khushi said as she plopped down on the bench next to NK.
"Hey!" They all replied in union.
"What were you guys talking about just now?" Khushi questioned leaning forward, ready to join the conversation.
"Glad you asked Khush!" NK said as he slung an arm around her shoulders causing a certain Arnav Singh Raizada to glare at it furiously. "In about two and a half weeks is our college's annual cultural festival!"
"Really! That's so exciting!" Khushi's eyes brightened with excitement.
"It's practically like the talent shows we had back in high school." NK mused as he remembered those days. "And so just like back in high school you and I are going to perform along with La. It'll be just the old days."
"Omg! Yes! Come on, Khush! NK and I didn't participated the last two years because it's not the same without you!" Lavanya squealed, "Plus you always came up with all our moves so it's not like we could've participated without you and your moves.
Khushi opened her mouth as if she was about to object when Anjali interrupted her,
"Don't say no! Even I'm taking part, except I'm not dancing just singing. Just because you just got here is no reason not to take part." Anjali complained, thinking Khushi would say no because of the new school and all.
Khushi just sat there staring back at everyone's expectant faces. NK nudged her telling her to say something.
"I...I don't dance anymore..." The words were so quiet NK barely heard her, but he did and the next thing Khushi knew was that NK looking at her like she was mad and questioning her,
"Since when does Khushi Kumari Gupta NOT dance?! I know you're not shy so what's wrong? You always looked forward to the talent show every year back in high school!" NK's tone went from surprised to worried in seconds as he took in Khushi's downcast eyes.
Everyone else also noticed the change in Khushi and worriedly Payal and Akash asked in union,
"Di, what's wrong?" Any other time they would have both blushed as everyone around them pulled their legs.
Gathering the courage Khushi quickly bluffed, "I haven't danced on stage in the past two years and I don't think I can do again all of a sudden."
Lavanya was about to protest when NK looked at her and shook his head, telling her to let it go.
"Fine whatever Khush." NK dismissed before looking back at her with a smirk, "But you have to choreograph mine and La's performance!"
Khushi's eyes widened as she realized NK used her bluff against her. How could she dance when she was no longer the same Khushi, someone had destroyed that Khushi. She was about to lie again when she looked at all her friends around her.
NK. Lavanya. Payal. Akash. Anjali. Arnav.
They all looked at waiting for her answer, her yes. She remembered the promise she made to herself when she came back. She was going to forget him and what he did and move on in life, if not for herself then for the people who loved her.
"Fine." Khushi replied with a smile, "But I'm going to be extremely strict!"
The tense atmosphere finally faded as everyone laughed out loud at Khushi's mock seriousness. Everyone joked and chatted for a few more minutes when Akash said,
"Guys I've gotta go otherwise I'll be late for my next class." Payal, Lavanya, Anjali and NK also got up as they all had classes that started in a few minutes.
NK asked if Khushi wanted to come as well when shook her head saying she was going to stay back for a while.
When everyone left Arnav, who had been extremely quiet today as he noticed how Khushi held herself back after the mention of dancing on stage, went and sat next to Khushi, who looked up at him with a smile.
"So what's wrong?" Arnav questioned as casually as possible.
"What would be wrong?" Was her instant reply.
"I know I already promised that I would never ask you what happened in London that caused your abrupt return, but something's bothering you and I know it has to do with what happened in London." Arnav said quietly waiting patiently for her response, which would vary from being enraged to reducing to tears.
Khushi visibly stiffened at the mere mention of London. So much had happened there and it wasn't easy to forget these things. She had told him all about what she studied there and how beautiful London was, but she never answered any questions about what she did there beside study.
Heck, she didn't tell anyone more than that not even herself.
He waited for a few more seconds, before he look at her. He noticed the hurt evident in her eyes as she was remembering what happened in London.
Figuring she wasn't going to tell him anything again, he got up and before walking away he whispered, "I'll be there for you... whenever you need me."
"Payal's not my sister." Khushi whispered, her eyes tightly shut. She knew what she was going to tell had nothing to with her not dancing anymore that was something completely different, something more painful. "Shashi Gupta and Garima Gupta aren't my parents."
Arnav had turned around the second she said that Payal wasn't her sister and when he heard her talk about her parents her sat next to placing a cautious hand on her shoulder.
She flinched slightly but didn't move it away like before. He had noticed how besides NK and Akash she never let any guy casually touch her, but he didn't know why. But he pushed that thought away as he silently waited for her to continue.
"I mean, they're my parents and Payal is my sister, but not by blood." She finally opened her eyes to look at him, to see if Arnav pushed her away like HE had done before, like other had done before, but he just stared back into her eyes waiting.
"There was always something about London. I had wanted to go there since I was a little girl, but my parents always said no. They would take Payal and I everywhere else but London was out of the question." She looked away again before continuing.
"I always felt that there was something wrong. I didn't look like Amma or Papa or Payal, looking at my features and theirs, you would have never thought we were a family. And somehow I knew I'd find my answer in London."
She stopped and didn't continue this time, Arnav softly squeezed her shoulder telling her to go on. She looked at him and what she saw there made her continue talking,
"In London, I found out about my real parents, my birth parents. They were friends with the Gupta's and years ago when I was still in my mom's stomach they found out I was a girl and in my dad's family giving birth to a girl was forbidden. But they couldn't abort me, they wouldn't so when I was born they gave me to the Gupta's asking them to take care of me and never let me know about my origin while they told their family that I died while my mom was giving birth."
She was crying by now. Her parents had taken her in without a second thought and her birth parents risked their lives to give her a life and she had never known.
"I...I never knew them...Arnav... they risked their li...lives for me. And...and the Gupta's? Th...they never let me feel ad...adopted." Arnav didn't know what to do, she always got frightened when he touched her and here she was sobbing miserably and he couldn't do a thing to take away her pain. "But...but...I'm glad. I'm glad I...I went an...and found out ab...about them..be'because...I...also fou...found..."
But she wasn't able to continue because someone from a distance called out to Arnav. He quickly removed his hand from her shoulder as she wiped away her tears, trying to compose herself once again.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have broken down like that on you..." Khushi whispered, embarrassedly at how easily she had told him everything and almost something more that no one knew.
"It's okay. I'm glad you were able to open and get it all out. If you ever need me, I'll be there." Arnav smiled at her softly before walking off in the direction he was called from.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Khushi sat by the window in the room staring up at the stars. Garima had given Khushi the letter that her birth parents had written to her when they gave her away.
In that letter her mother had said she and her father would always be with her in her heart. And if she ever wanted to talk to them she could find them watching over her in the stars.
Then she had stopped to ask herself if they really were in the stars when, as if her mother knew she would be wondering that, the next sentence in the letter told her that the answer to everything didn't lie in true or false, that sometimes it just had to do with faith.
A sad smile on her lips and a single tear rested on her cheek as she continued to stare at the stars, her thoughts traveling back to the day her parents had told her everything.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Khushi and Payal had walked into their home laughing at how Khushi had given poor JP a heart attack when she snuck up on him talking to his wife over the phone.
Shashi and Garima looked up, smiling at each at how much livelier the house seemed since Khushi came home.
"Amma! Papa!" Khushi called as soon as she saw them both sitting on the couch, "How was your day? I had the best day! I met NK and La again after all these years!"
The hesitant, nervous smiles she received from both her parents told her something was wrong.
"Um...Payal...why don't you go to your room and rest? I wanna spend some alone time with Amma and Papa." Khushi said to Payal, who agreed and left saying she'll see them later. Khushi turned back to her parents and asked, "Let's skip all the hesitant question and answers, instead why don't you just tell me what bothering both of you. I checked up on everything at Gupta Industries just last week. Also I spoke to Doctor Mehta about both of your check ups and he said everything was fine. So I know it has nothing to do with your health or the business."
Garima couldn't take it any longer, when her daughter looked after each and every little thing in their lives then how could anything be wrong with them? They were worried for her, they were going to ruin her world today, but how could they do that to their Khushi?
Khushi's daughterly instincts kicked in when tears suddenly spilled out of her mother's eyes and her father couldn't even meet her eyes. "What is Papa? Tell me!"
"Khushi...sweetheart..." Shashi looked everywhere but his daughter, how could he look her in the eye and destroy everything she lived for? But he knew she had the right to know so he took a deep breath and continued, "Khushi...there was always a reason for us not wanting you to go to London in the past."
Then it all clicked together in Khushi's mind. She knew this was coming but she had wanted some more time. Time to get used to everything she had discovered there and forget everything she had lost.
But Khushi being Khushi couldn't see the pain her parent's were going through as they tried to tell her what she already knew.
"I know, Papa. I know everything." Khushi said looking directly at them when their head shot up at her words.
"I know. About my birthparents, about their helplessness, about you, about me. But I was your daughter and will always be your daughter. I know I had a past but who doesn't? What my real parents did for me was extremely brave and I'll be grateful to them for it. I just wish I had a chance to meet them in person, just once before they passed away..." Khushi blinked away the tears before they could spill over, she could cry later.
Garima and Shashi both stared at their daughter in utter disbelief. They were worried about how she would handle the news and here she was comforting and assuring them that she knew and she was content with her life, that they shouldn't worry about her.
"Anyways, Amma you always said never grieve over the past because you can't change it, that everything happens for a reason. And Papa, you would say that life is what we have today, not what we had yesterday or what we will have tomorrow." Khushi looked them both in the eyes once more, making sure they knew she was fine, more than fine actually she was happy.
Garima also stood up when Khushi did, telling her to wait a minute. Garima rushed off to her room and returned moments later carrying a small wooden box, which she placed in Khushi's hands as she stood in front of her.
Khushi look at the box, it was extremely old yet the intricate designs were just as beautiful. She felt right holding the box, but she didn't know why as she look at her mother in confusion.
"This is your mother's. She gave it to us all those years back, it has some things she wanted us to give you from her when the right time came." Garima looked at the box with a certain fondness and then a Khushi telling her to take it that it was hers.
Suddenly Khushi put everything back in the box, she walked to her bed still holding the box before she laid down and wept, just wept while hugging the box to herself.
Somewhere he knew that whatever Khushi had told him today had nothing to do with her unease at the thought of dancing. Yet he was still glad she had said everything she did because one thing was clear, a lot had happened in London and she just couldn't keep it all to herself.
She was about to tell him something else, but then someone calling him had sort of brought her out of her trance as she realized as she had said and everything she was about to.
Khushi. She was just that. Despite whatever she had been through and whatever she was hiding she never failed to have a smile on her face as well as spread it to everyone around her.
He didn't know what it was about her, but she was different and he liked that. Arnav smiled, something he did often nowadays, as he remembered their first encounter.
"Shit! Shit! Shit!" Arnav kept muttering under his breath as he ran through the halls, practically ruling the college came in handy at times like this when everyone moved out of his way as he came running.
He glanced down at his watch once more only to see he had a two minutes to get to class causing him to increase speed. Right as he looked up he saw a figure standing right in front of him.
He was running to fast to have stopped in time and so he slammed right into her figure in front of him. A frightened shriek escaped the figures lips as the force of his body slammed into her small frame.
He instinctively wrapped his arms around her as they both tumbled to the ground. He turned his body slightly as they fell to prevent himself from falling onto of her. His breath left him painfully as his right shoulder made contact with the ground first.
After a few seconds he felt the person still in his arms moving against him and he opened his eyes, which were tightly shut due to the pain cursing through his right shoulder.
His eyes met with the most expressively striking hazel eyes he had ever seen. The owner of those eyes stilled their movements as their eyes met.
Her doe-like eyes were lined with eyeliner, which had slightly smudged in the corner and he lift his hand to wipe away the smudge with his thumb. Her eyes move to eye his thumb for a second before returning to gaze into his once again.
In those hazel-like eyes he saw fear and something else he didn't know how to place causing his eyebrows to scrunch up in confusion.
For how long they lay on the ground staring into each other's eyes no one knew, but the poorly hush whispers brought them back to reality.
He watched as realization lit up her doe-like eyes and she pushed against his shoulders in effort to get causing him to let out a soft "Oof." Her eyes widened with horror and her mouth formed a 'O' shape as she realized what she did.
This rime she got up more carefully, making sure not to hurt him again, before turning back to help him up as well. Never before had he need nor taken help from anyone in his life then why today? He had been doing a lot of things he never nor had ever thought of doing before.
He stared at her as she gathered her things and his from the ground and hand them to him. She smiled at him, her eyes voicing a silent 'Thank You' as she turned around and began to walk away.
Walking away from him, the idea of her leaving him bothered him so he called out to her, making her footsteps going away from him halt and her body stiffen, with a soft,
"Khushi."
She turned around slowly, uncertain and uncomfortable. His touch was still lingering on her and she didn't like it one bit, it made her feel weird, it didn't scare her like it did when other guys touched her.
"I'm sorry. Do I know you?" Khushi asked when she realized he had called her by her name.
"Yes. Um, sorry no." Arnav wanted to slap himself for sounding like an idiot. He saw the confused look on her face as he clarified, "I'm Arnav, Arnav Singh Raizada. Anjali and Akash's older brother. You can call me ASR, everyone here does."
"Why?" Her question threw him off.
"Excuse me?"
"I asked why? Why does everyone call you ASR when your name is Arnav?" She stated as if it was the most obvious thing. Arnav came up blank, he didn't know how to answer her question.
All the great Arnav Singh Raizada could think about was how sweet his name sounding coming from her mouth.
"They just do. You don't have to." Arnav finally replied.
"Haha, well it's great to finally met you Arnav." Khushi said with a smile of her face, he found it weird how she didn't offer her hand for a handshake, but he let it go. "Your brother and sister really look up to you. Especially your brother, Akash, he's such a sweet guy."
"Yea, your hug showed me just how sweet you think he is." Arnav muttered to himself, to low for her to hear. He cleared his throat and continued the conversation, "Thanks."
"Thanks? For what?" Khushi questioned utterly confused.
"For talking to Akash two months back at his graduation when I couldn't make it. The whole time I was in London I was worrying over how upset Akash must've been. Thanks for talking to hi when he needed it." Arnav said genuinely grateful.
"Don't thank me! I just hated seeing him sad on such a memorable day." Khushi replied, trying not to react at the mention of London.
He wanted to keep talking to her but he didn't know what to say to her. He was just thinking of something to say when,
"So Uncle has given his entire company to you?" Arnav nodded in response, "Same here, I mean my Papa has given Gupta Industries to me. When I found out I couldn't wait to meet you. I hope we can be friends, it'll be great while we're in college and I'm sure we'll be seeing each other a lot afterwards as well for business so being friends would be nice."
"Of course. That'd be great." Arnav replied calmly even though he was ecstatic at the thought on the inside.
"I was going for coffee tomorrow with NK and La, my best friends, along with Payal. You should come and bring Akash and Anjali as well. I'm sure everyone will get along and it would b great if all my friends could be friends as well." Khushi said chirpily.
"Sure. I'd'I mean'we'd all like that. Here I'll give you my number." Arnav moved his right arm to reach for his phone in his pocket, completely forgetting about his fall and cursed in pain under his breath when he moved.
"Oh! Are you okay?!" Khushi cried worriedly, moving closer to him. "We should get you to a nurse! And don't try acting all macho man and say no! You just come with me!"
Arnav couldn't help but stare as she yelled at him, then asked where the nurse's office was, and finally leading him in that direction by barely placing her against his left shoulder, he noticed she avoided any contact with skin.
Half an hour later, the nurse had checked his shoulder, applied some soothing cream, and bandaged it. The whole time Arnav and Khushi chatted away, sometimes joking around, sometimes asking about the other, but all in all in that half an hour Arnav and Khushi had unknowingly grown closer to each other.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Arnav remembered how they had become good friends in the last two and half weeks after their first meeting. Every moment he spent with her flashed through his mind. When they met at the coffee shop, when they would visit their home and vice versa, during lunch at college, in the hallways, afterwards when they would all get together, and so on.
In that instant, Arnav Singh Raizada knew he wanted to be more than just friends with Khushi Kumari Gupta.
