Life Mein Kabhi Kabhi...
Joyous cries filled the air as the new graduates rushed to their loved ones. Their caps lay scattered around the field, diplomas in their hands, pride and accomplishment filled the hearts of every person there.
"Mom!" Payal Kumari Gupta shouted as she rushed into her mother's arms.
"Oh, I'm so proud of you! My daughter's all grown up! Both of them!" Garima Gupta cried as she hugged her youngest daughter fiercely.
"Mom! I just graduated high school! You're acting as if you've just married me off!" Payal complained as she pulled out of her mother's embrace. Looking around she asked, "Anyways where's Dad?"
"Right here, sweetheart!" Shashi Gupta called from behind his daughter, who immediately rushed into his embrace. Chuckling at his daughter, Shashi pulled away, keeping his hold on Payal's shoulders as he said, "Don't you want to see you graduation gift?"
"Gift?! You didn't have to Dad." Payal said as her eyes lit up with joy. "But! Since you did...tell me what it is! Is it a car? Or a trip to Europe? Or...
Payal trailed off in thought as her parents chuckled at their daughter's excitement. Payal huffed in frustration as no more ideas came to her, "Dad, at least give me a hint!"
"Let's see...um...this gift can't be wrapped in any way what's so ever." Shashi gave with a wink.
"Can't be wrapped...then it must be a car!" Payal cried out happily while Shashi just smirked back.
"Uh huh, don't be so sure." He said with a certain glint in his eye.
"So it isn't a car?...Then what is it?!" Payal cried in frustration this time. "Why can't you just tell me?"
"Uh huh. You'll see for yourself soon enough. Until then...I'm starving!" Shashi muttered looking around for the food.
A frustrated Payal and confused Garima followed him when he spotted the food on the other side of the field.
"Listen...um..." Garima whispered to Shashi as they reached the buffet table. "What gift are you talking about? Didn't we decide on gifting her ownership to the new plot of land we just bought? And as I know we placed the paperwork in a folder and wrapped it, so what's all this about a gift that can't be wrapped?"
"It was a last minute gift. Actually truth be told even I didn't know of it until this morning." Shashi replied with a soft smile on his lips. "It's not just a gift for our Payal, it's a gift for all of us in a way."
"Last minute gift...for all of us...?" Garima whispered out loud to herself as she watched her husband walked off to get his food while she stood there more confused than before.
"Mom? Let's go eat!" Payal called pulling Garima away from her thoughts. They all got their food and sat down to enjoy it.
An hour later Shashi called his wife and his daughter, telling him it was time for them to head home. As they walked towards car Payal asked, "Dad? What about my gift? Is it at home or what?"
Shashi looked down sullenly at his daughter, his disappointed eyes looking into her expectant ones. "I'm sorry Payal. I was just as excited as you for this gift but looks like the gift isn't coming. This was more than just a graduation gift for you too, it was a gift special to all of us."
"It's okay, Dad. You can just give it to me some other time. It doesn't have to be given to me on the day of my graduation." Payal replied with a comforting smile as Shashi just looked on upset and disappointed.
"I have given up hope on this gift ever arriving'" Shashi replied detachedly as he continued towards the car at a faster pace.
Garima was about to lighten the mood and change the topic when a sweet melodious voice that was just too familiar to all of them called out from behind them,
"So you're just going to leave without your gift?"
Let me know what you think? Should I continue? Or what?
