This is just the first part (2 parts all together)
Hope you enjoy! 😃
The one that got away
There was a special place in hell for people like him and he knew that he was doomed for the rest of eternity.
But it wasn't as if this world was any better than the hell that was awaiting him. Every day he burned even amidst the happiness that he had been blessed with. Yet every moment of joy was tarnished by the lack of hope and the wanting of more.
As he entered his house, he felt a sense of belonging but there was also the ever present sense of detachment. He belonged here but he could never find peace. It was a dichotomy that no one would understand and many would scoff at him for complaining.
"Oh, you are here" His wife of 10 years, Sameera walked towards him with a beautiful smile, "Aap ki khana table par hai."
Sameera was beautiful. She was tall, graceful and had a certain serenity about her. But more importantly she was also a great person. In other words, the type of wife other men would kill for.
She was a lovely wife, the best one could ask for. She was the mother of his child and both of them were his to hold and protect for eternity.
Hell is reserved for men like me who have lovely and beautiful wife but want something they can never have.
But it was the choice that he had made. He had created this hell.
So without saying anything else, he went to the table and started eating whilst his wife regaled him with stories of her day. Maan was just finishing his dinner when he was interrupted.
"Baba!" The sweetest voice called out to him, before his daughter jumped into his embrace. "I missed you!"
There wasn't anything he wouldn't do for his girl and she was the focus of his life. Amidst the downs of his life, she balanced any possible pain or disappointments.
"And I missed you my darling" He pressed a kiss on his daughter's sweet cheek. "How is my girl? Have you been naughty?"
"Of course she has! Has there ever been a day when Gia hasn't created havoc?" Sameera laughed out, "Gia let your dad settle in before you jump on him"
"Sam it's okay. Let her sit next to me while I watch some news" he smiled at his little girl, "After all, Baba needs to spend time with his favourite person"
Picking her up, he took her to their television room and sat down on the couch. Distracted, he turned on the television while patting his daughter's head.
Flicking channels, even as he was talking to Gia, he was suddenly startled as he heard a familiar name.
"With us today is the best-selling author, Geet Handa" the interviewer spoke and the camera was focused on him, not showing the mentioned author. "She has sold millions of copies of her books and is world renowned. Her characters, Drashti and Gurmeet have become icons over the last decade, with fans clamouring to see the pair finally get together in the final book of the series. Their relationship has spurned many debates but all agree that they were made for each other. However this author has been known for being evasive and creating twists at the last moment. So it is with bated breath the fans await to see the pair's fate."
"So, Geet welcome to our show" The interviewer said with genuine delight, "As a fan of the splendid series, I am personally elated to have you here."
Maan felt his heart skip a beat and the hairs on his back rise as the screen finally showed the author.
"Its my honor to be here" Geet smiled serenely, "I always enjoy the opportunity to get my message across to my readers"
Maan was listening to her voice but not taking in her words. He only soaked up the beauty of her tone, the way her lips blew the words and the soft look in her eyes.
Oh Geet! He was mesmerized as always by the sight of her even if it was through the television screen.
But then again that was how it had always been, since the very first time she had met him.
----------------------------------------------------------
Khurana Publishers was the biggest publishing house in the country whilst managing to maintain quality.
Maan had a large contribution in this, as he had poured out his heart and soul into the company. He personally talked to some of the authors, to gauge their quality of writing.
"Sir, there is a woman to see you" his assistant stuck his head out of the door. "I tried to stop her but she is adamant about meeting you"
Maan rolled his eyes, "Come on, you can stop one woman from barging into my office"
"No he cannot!" A voice cut across and in strode a petite woman. She had wild curly hair, a cute button nose and pert lips. She was both beautiful and plain. She was a contradiction.
But more obviously she was very determined, as she walked right up to his desk.
"I am Geet Handa" She stuck out her hand, even as her slightly to big glasses were sliding down her nose. "Its a pleasure to meet you, Mr Khurana"
Maan just blinked at the crazy lady, who didn't seem at all embarrassed for barging into his office, instead like a tornado she thundered on.
"I am an author, something you must have already gathered from my coming her" She continued, not at all bothered by his lack of words. "A very good one at that. I tried to submit my manuscript but your company wouldn't accept it because of some stupid reason. So I decided to come and drop it to you"
Maan blinked again and managed to say, "I don't just read manuscripts like that" Even as he spoke he was staring at her weird earrings, which were shaped like spiders and skulls. It definitely didn't match with Kameez she was wearing.
"Trust me, you'll want to read mine" She smirked at him, utterly confident, "I know you'll love it"
