"A man is like a key, a woman is like a lock. A key that can open every lock is a great key, but a lock that can be opened by every key is a worthless lock."
' Old misogynistic proverb
Part-1
Koki was a worried woman, she had shown Ahem's horoscope to seven astrologers, yet all of them told her that he will die within six months of marriage and the only way to avert that would be to marry him to a widow. Ahem was Koki's pride, her hope and her reason for living. She was to Ahem what Jijabai was to Shivaji.
Koki consulted her relatives but everyone had a different opinion. She didn't know what to do, she didn't have the courage to get her son married to an unmarried girl and risk his life..but the prospect of marrying him to a widow wasn't a pleasant thought for Koki. Ahem would turn thirty next month and she didn't wish to delay the decision any further'.she steeled herself and told Ahem that she is going to get him married to a widow. Ahem never argued with his mom but this time he voiced his opinions frankly. He wasn't against widow remarriage but according to him widows should marry widowers and not young bachelors like him. Kinjal supported Ahem but Koki would have none of it. She put her foot down ..she stopped taking her medicines and it made her sick and she used her ill health to emotionally manipulate Ahem until he acceded to her wishes'
Koki decided to stay with Nani in her farm house to recuperate. Parag decided to drop her and return after a few days. It was here that they saw a young girl dressed in an off-white sari walking to Krishna temple. Koki thought that she must definitely be a widow- her white saree, covered head, absence of jewels and bindi/ sindoor told it all. She was young and beautiful- beautiful enough for her Ahem.
Kokila promptly made enquiries and liked what she heard. The girl's name was Gopi. She was married off to an army officer when she was just 16 and her husband left with the Indian peace keeping contingent to Sierra Leone just a week after their marriage and never returned- not even as a corpse. .He was presumed dead as all of his colleagues had been killed in a rebel ambush. She was thrown out of her in laws house and now lives with her parents for the past 7 years. She was a pious girl and a devotee of Kanhaji.
Koki and Parag called an astrologer and went to Ratan Chand Shah's house with Ahem's horoscope. The Shah's were surprised at their daughter's "luck" when the astrologer said that the two horoscopes match and Ahem would be saved from untimely death. KKoki called her jeejaji who was a lawyer and asked him how many years must a woman wait for legally remarrying after her husband goes missing? Koki's jeejaji knew that Koki doesn't like being questioned answered quickly without asking about the reason. He told her that a legal procedure after 7 years would legally make the woman eligible for re-marriage. Koki was delighted and sealed the alliance on that day. No one asked for Gopi's opinion'her parents always did what they thought would be best for her'She wasn't asked for her opinion when Harish's mother asked for her hand because her son was smitten by her beauty'.and she's not being asked now'Ratan Chand felt happy that his daughter would now no longer be shunned as a widow'his girl was too innocent and nave to survive in this wicked world after he was dead. His DIL was a mean woman who would never let Gopi live peacefully. Wherever Gopi went, lecherous eyes and indecent proposals would follow..it would end now'
Gopi was deeply pained by the turn her life took. Forgetting Harish wasn't easy, even though she had spent only a week with him, that week was the most beautiful week of her life. He showered her with love ..he was a perfect gentleman. He wrote letters to her regularly until the fateful day on which she was condemned to widowhood. Gopi still believes that Harish is alive but people think otherwise 'seven years is a long time'he was presumed dead and she had to dress as a widow to confirm to society's rules'.and now this?
Gopi had decided to wait for Harish's return..She spent her day worshipping Kanhaji. The news of her marriage troubled her and she objected but her mother would have none of it. She told her that this is the only way of wiping the stigma of widowhood and that she is blessed to get a proposal from such a wealthy family. Gopi told that a widow marrying a bachelor would lead to marital problems if the man isn't broad-minded. Her mom asked her to shut up and told that she is doubly cursed- with widowhood coupled with enchanting beauty, she has to get married.
The legal formalities were taken care of and Ahem and Gopi got married. Gopi felt uneasy as Ahem applied sindoor on the parting of her hair' it reminded her of her marriage to Harish..it pained her to give herself to another man. Ahem was feeling indifferent and he needed time to introspect and decide the future of this new relationship. That night he didn't speak to Gopi but his actions did. He ignored her and took his pillow. He slept on the sofa while Gopi was on the bed in bridal finery. Gopi didn't know whether she felt happy or sad, she felt happy as she didn't want to get into a physical relationship so soon but she was sad because she knew that she would be trapped in a loveless marriage for a lifetime. Staying in his room and his house as a stranger would be both awkward and difficult.
