Part-3

"There is only one happiness in this life, to love and be loved."
- George Sand

" Gopi"..it was the first time Ahem had called out her name. She turned and saw a cold look on his face..she knew that it would be an unpleasant conversation but there was no way to avoid it. Ahem asked her in a rude and cold voice "when are you planning to get the hell out of my life? " Gopi was left speechless..she had never thought that she and Ahem would have a discussion on this topic. Ahem was irritated by her silence and said "Oh! I forgot women like you won't leave without receiving a substantial amount of money..so how much is your demand?"

Gopi felt as if lightning had struck her. Where could she go now? She can't possibly go back to her parents …villagers have already spoken enough about her remarriage and if she return now then there would be a scandal. Her SIL would say "Yeh daayan na toh marti hai na peecha chodti hai". She recovered and told him "Ahemji I have nowhere to go. Please let me stay here and I won't be an obstacle to you". On hearing this Ahem walked off in a huff.

Gopi felt like a stranger in MM even though Baa tried her best to make her feel at home. She advised Gopi on how to please her husband…she didn't know that it was of no use to Gopi. Ahem behaved more like an enemy than a husband.

Gopi felt weird while applying sindoor but she had to act as if all is well..she couldn't afford to be labeled as a Parityaktha – a woman abandoned by her husband…….impressions are very important in our society.

Koki had once upbraided her for wearing a simple saree during the day time. She reminded her that as a Modi bahu she has to dress according to their status…poor Gopi had no inclination to dress up. The events in the past seven years sapped her of all happiness…and she was feeling like an unwelcome guest in MM.Ahem was the scion of Modi empire and Koki and the rest of the family wanted to get an heir soon. She asked Gopi uncomfortable questions every month and instructed her to observe fasts on certain auspicious days to beget a child…Gopi didn't know how to tell them the reality …and she knew that if she told them about the state of her marriage with Ahem then Koki definitely ask Parag to scold him…and Ahem in turn would make her the victim of his wrath.

Certain things cannot be kept a secret for a long time and the state Gopi and Ahem's relationship was one among those.

One day Gopi answered the courier boy's bell and Koki stood next to her while she was signing the receipt…Kokila was shocked by what she saw – she signed it as Gopi.H.Parekh..Koki would have not been this shocked if it was her maiden name. This meant only one thing- She and Ahem don't share a close relationship and because of that she still doesn't feel like a Modi. Till now Koki thought that Ahem felt awkward while talking to his wife in front of elders and that's why he spoke very little to her in their presence. For all his modern ways, Ahem was a prude when it comes to relationships…but she was wrong..and she had to do something now.

She didn't say anything to Gopi as she didn't want her to feel more awkward and moreover she didn't feel that Gopi was the one who thwarted Ahem's advances. She waited till Parag returned home and told him everything and asked him to have a man to man talk with Ahem.

Parag was not happy with the state of things and felt bad for the two young people trapped in a loveless marriage…but what is done can't be undone. Divorce was a taboo to the Modi's and those two were bound for life…Parag knew that he can't force them to love each other…but he can't let things remain the same for the rest of Gopi and Ahem's life. He had to make their relationship between both of them cordial…and both of them had to make major adjustments.

Part-4
"Trying to forget someone you love is like trying to remember someone you never knew."

Parag talked to Ahem and tried to make him realise that he has no option other than to make it work with Gopi...Ahem didn't get the logic...how could he carry the burden throughout his life? How could he get physically close to her without loving her...was it possible to make love to Gopi without loving her...and have a child with her and sit as a couple in all religious ceremonies? He could never imagine doing what he was asked to do .

Gopi had seen this day coming..she was sure that any attempts to escape from it would only delay the inevitable...Ahem felt awkward to talk about this..but there was no other way out . He called Gopi and told her about his parent's expectations. He faced the wall and had his back towards Gopi while speaking because of a strange discomfort...that discomfort wouldn't have cropped up if there was love.

They did what they had to do...Gopi felt violated and Ahem felt defiled...but it was not going to be the last time...Modi empire needs a heir, and that heir needs a womb to grow...and Gopi was there to provide it...

Gopi felt dirty, she would feel as if she has sold herself in return for her parent's peace of mind and social respectability. She fully understood the pain of abducted women who are forced into marriages..her fate was similar...She was brought up in a traditional family and her mother had taught her to differentiate between moral and immoral deeds..and now Gopi is unable to judge which category does her physical relations with Ahem fall under.

Her only way out of this hell was by becoming a mother. Gopi prayed to Kanhaji for mental strength to bear the assault on her soul. She knew that even Ahem hated every moment of it. She wondered how would a child grow up well when its parent's marriage is a sham and they behave like strangers...kids are very sensitive.
