Nine years on why is Vivek still an outcast?

I was reading an article today on how Bipasha Basu has refused to do an item number with Vivek for Zilla Ghaziabad which triggered this post. Few days back there was news of Zarine Khan rejecting an item number in the same film when she found out her co-star is Vivek so that she wouldnt upset Salman. While Zarine's denial is more understandable given her dependency on Salman to get work but Bipasha isnt exactly Salman's buddy. Nor does she need him to get work. And its not that she will get work with Salman anyway unless its a multistarrer like No Entry. She isnt even an A lister anymore to not want to work with an outcast like Vivek. And its not just Bipasha or Zarine. Vivek was recently dropped from 2-3 films in a controversal manner. Sanjay Gupta even took potshots at him publicly. Vivek did not retaliate back and Sanjay knew he would get away with it.
Vivek was at one time considered a promising star. He had decent amount of talent and in a short time had aquired a fan following for his roles which ranged from Saathiya to Company. But his life changed after he called a press conference and spoke out against Salman's harrassment. But then that PC was done nine years ago and since then Vivek has made many attempts to make it up to Salman. He has even apologized to Salman publicly.
So what really makes Vivek an outcast even today? Is it just the press conference he held nine years ago which Bollywood hasnt forgiven and forgotten? Or is it because Vivek has a personality which rubs off people in the wrong way? Or is Vivek like that court jester who is supposed to amuse everyone when they are frustrated?

The article:

Bipasha refuses to do an item song with Vivek

Bipasha Basu has refused to do an item number in Sanjay Dutt and Vivek Oberoi-starrer Zilla Ghaziabad.

Dutt, who is taking keen interest in the film which is due for release in May, had approached Bipasha for an item number to be shot with Sanjay, Vivek and Bipasha, but the sultry actress refused, and the industry insiders say that the reason is Vivek.

Apparently, because Bipasha and Vivek are not on talking terms. Remember, the two were seen in the superhit item number Bidi Jalailein Omkaraabout three years back. Dutt and Bips share great relations, and both got still more friendly when they did Lamhaatogether.

But, Dutt and Zilla Ghaziabaddirector are so keen on having Bipasha on board that they have decided to create a situation for another item number which will just have Dutt and Bipasha and but Vivek in it so that everything goes smoothly.Wonder why is Vivek, who has been otherwise so quiet, has such a notorious image in the industry? He was unceremoniously dropped from three films in the recent past - Sanjay Gupta's Shootout At Wadala, Shiva's Bloody Pakiand Bejoy Nambiar's David. With about five films releasing in the next two years, hope Vivek, who is considered to be a decent actor, finds a foothold in Bollywood once again.

BW reactions to VO PC 9 years ago and things havent changed much:
'Vivek must learn discretion'

Salman Khan's [ Images ] admirers are less forgiving of Vivek Oberoi's [ Images ] outburst in the media than the star.

On Tuesday Oberoi alleged Khan called him 41 times in one night and asked him to keep away from Aishwarya Rai [ Images ], Rani Mukherji [ Images ] and Somy Ali.

Says Kareena Kapoor [ Images ], "If he had a problem with Salman, why could he not solve it instead of going to the press? I have worked briefly with Salman for a film I finally did not do. He was thoroughly gentlemanly with me. My sister Karisma and Salman are very good friends. In fact, she contacted him immediately after this incident."

Suniel Shetty [ Images ] sounds regretful, "I don't know what's happening with Vivek and how he looks at life. Being an actor and a coartiste, he should not have taken the matter to the press. If he felt Salman had behaved badly, he [Oberoi] should have confronted him [Khan] physically instead of talking about it on television. I thought it was in very bad taste. Everyone believes Vivek has done it for publicity.

"I know Salman," continues Shetty, "He is a fantastic human being. He [Khan] says he made a call or two. But he says he wasn't abusive. I get irked with some seniors, for example, when they come late on the sets. But I still hero worship them. Where is the question of Salman getting insecure about his career? Filmmakers keep going back to Salman."

Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali [ Images ], who is set to launch his next film with Khan, describes the star as "the best human being I have met in my life."

Upset on his friend's behalf, Bhansali says, "I think Vivek Oberoi has committed the biggest blunder ever by any actor in Mumbai [ Images ]. He is so powerful. He knows kick-boxing and karate. [US President George W] Bush should call back his army from Iraq and send Vivek instead. I am very scared of Vivek. I will never be able to work with him now. I may shout at him on the sets and he may call a press conference against me. All the heroines should touch his feet for protecting their dignity.

"The media should be ready to cover every event at the Oberois' residence," adds Bhansali. "If Vivek's dog has dysentery tomorrow, we should be prepared to hear Vivek talk about it on camera for three hours. The film industry functions on fraternal feelings. If there is a problem, we solve it in-house. Vivek has no business talking about Salman's mental state. He should not have talked about his Coca-Cola campaign or Rani Mukherji, Diya Mirza [ Images ] and Aishwarya Rai at a time when he was supposed to be so distraught."

"Vivek must learn discretion from stars like Shah Rukh Khan [ Images ], Aamir Khan [ Images ], Hrithik Roshan [ Images ] and Ajay Devgan [ Images ]. There is dignity in being a celebrity. Let us not lose that dignity. Didn't Raj Kapoor [ Images ], Dilip Kumar [ Images ] and Dev Anand [ Images ] have differences of opinion? They never maligned each other."

"Salman's problem," continues Bhansali, "is he thinks with his heart. He gives his life to people he loves. That is why his friends have always stood by him. He is perfectly sane and there is no need to send him to a shrink, as some self-styled psychoanalysts think. As for him getting professionally insecure, Salman will be around for a long time. I am making my next film with him. He has given three of the biggest hits ever [in Bollywood] -- Maine Pyaar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun...! and Karan Arjun. Those who think Salman is getting insecure should examine their career closely. If you believe you are the new kid on the block and four of your films flop in a row, it is time to get delirious publicity."

"It is not Salman who is insecure at 37," declares Bhansali. "If Vivek was threatened, why is he giving unsolicited advice to Salman and his family? I don't think Salman needs counselling from any self-motivated colleague. How much time has Vivek spent with Salman to know how he handles his women? Why should there be a press conference to hear Oberoi put forward his views based on hearsay? Did we ask him what happened between him and his fiance whom he broke up with after an elaborate engagement?"

Abhishek Bachchan [ Images ] has the final word, "In the film industry, there is a code of honour whereby all problems are sorted out internally."

Its cause half the industry is shit scared of salman khan and so they've boycotted Vivek. I never payed attention to him much but I do feel bad for him.

As much as bollywood is about moving in the right circles and knowing what to say when, sometimes you have to speak out against assholes. Which is what oberoi did, and unfortunately the whole thing backfired.

If we properly look at the past decade, he's the only one who really said anything even significant against salman khan in public, and he's the only one who got exiled. Its a pity really how bwood politics work.

On top of this he isnt the most charismatic guy, holding a press conference was over-doing it, he could have been smarter about outing salman but ultimately ended up acting like the awkward kid that showed up at the party and tried to stand up to the bully wayyy too fast.

Sometimes I wonder if Vivek if things would have been better if Vivek had displayed more character. Ok he did say stuff against Salman but what he said was actually true. If he had stuck to his stand and gone about his work instead of grovelling would he have atleast commanded more respect?

Yes. As much as I think he wasn't really doing anything wrong by publically going against salman, he really is a weak person in general and all his antics after the incident have proved that. He became a giant joke.

even kareena after so much of success had to change her "i am the bitch" attitude coz it doesnt work here!
and bipahsa is history as well! she would at this point of career where she is sinking grossly never do one with vivek. Shez praying she can get something like chikni chameli or anarkali to be in the news but man her days are gone! Raaz-3 is the only hope left!

What i find suprising is that vivek was not alien to the ways of the industry, from what I read he was born in and around it. Wouldn't of he already known industry decorum? And didnt anyone counsel him to try a descrete way of handeling salman? It appears to me that someone other power jumped the situation to attack salman professionally and personally. I don't think Its just vivek he is upset with.. But Vivek gets the full brunt of it publicly. And I don't blame salman for still harboring disgust and annoyance! And manipulation for manipulation!
