OPN used MK only because he had a tiff with Rafi. Ravi is said to have used MK only because the producer wanted it that way (Nasir Hussain, I think). Rafi was Ravi's first choice.

Anyway, Mahendra Kapoor got a chance to sing for whatever reasons, and got to be mentioned along with the greats.

You are right.. No comparison here.. Rafi is class apart...

"Chalo Ek Baar Phirase Ajanabi Ban Jaye Hum Dono"..... Mahendra Kapoor's hit song and his personal favorite has a story behind it. The lyrics of this song is penned by Sahir Ludhianvi. Sahir was in love with singer Sudha Malhotra and wanted to marry her but Sudha's strict father did not approve the relation. It is said that Sahir then wrote this lyric addressed to Sudha --- chalo ek baar phirase ajanabi ban jaye hum dono......

Gumrah came much later where then Sahir decided to use this lyric. The 3rd antara says everything.....

Taarruf = Introduction, Taalluk = relation, attachment
Afsana = tale, story Anjam = End

Chalo ek baar....what an outstanding lyric...my personal favorite..Hats off to Sahir saab...

I'm a HUGE Rafi fan but to answer Punjini ji's Q, can only be one of 2 reasons:
- Rafi saaheb was modesty/humility personified
- Rafi saaheb was not as qualified to comment on the initial similarity as Punjini ji 😛

The first is defintely true from what I've seen of all Rafi saaheb's video's on DD BUT lets not forget, Mukesh was mistaken for Saigal when he sang his first song. Be as it may, this is a fact that when MK sang "chand chupa aur taare doobe" in Sohni Mahiwal, it was assumed by all and sundry that the song had been sung by Rafi Saaheb. MK changed his style (rather I should say that he got some different kind of songs) only later on in his career.

Nasir Hussain - do you mean BR Chopra?

He's sung a lot of songs that will be perennial classics so I guess he deserves an entry into the HFM HOF...

I just want to add here that the relationship between Rafisahab and Mahendra Kapoorji was that of a Guru and Shishya. Kapoorji ne Rafisahabse 'ganda' bandhwaya tha.
As far as superiority goes, my signature says it all.
