Coolie has brought back the much needed cheer at the Tamil box office. Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Aamir Khan, Upendra and Soubin Shahir’s movie has made Rs 151 crores at the worldwide box office on day one. It is the highest for a Tamil film. This year was a lacklustre one with big budget movies like Thug Life, Good Bad Ugly flopping at the cinema halls. Everyone’s hopes were pinned on Lokesh Kanagaraj and he delivered. Coolie is a tribute to Thalaiva from one of his biggest fan boys and is full of seeti-maar moments. The pre-sales of the movie were excellent in the US, UK, Singapore and other areas.
Sun Pictures has confirmed that the official figures are Rs 151 crores on day one. This is higher than Pathaan that made Rs 106 crores on day one, Jawan that grossed close Rs 130 crores on day one. Both these Hindi movies starred Shah Rukh Khan. Unlike Coolie, these films did not have actors from South industries to bring in local crowds. However, Coolie is on the fifth place when it comes to day one collections from Tamil Nadu. The top three spots are held by movies of Thalapathy Vijay.
Coolie is the first Tamil movie to do such staggering figures. In the past few years, we have seen many Telugu movies whose day one is above Rs 150 crores. Pushpa 2, Baahubali 2 and RRR are some films that made over Rs 200 crores on its opening day worldwide. One of the main reasons is the strong North America market that has huge demand for Telugu movies. Rajinikanth’s movies whether it is Jailer or Kabali have always done well overseas. Coolie has done excellent business in the UK as well. We saw how the movie was being promoted in Singapore that has a huge Tamil population.
Sun Pictures, Rajinikanth and the whole team of Coolie are in celebratory mood. The movie has made Rs 151 crores on day one at the global box office. It has done better than Jawan and Pathaan that were not exactly Pan-Indian movies in terms of star cast. However, it is lesser than some of the big films coming out of Telegu film industry.
