Naintara had been laying in her bed simply staring at the wall trying to push out all the thoughts that invaded her peace. She couldn't help but think of what she'd done years ago that had resulted in the universe turning on her in such a way that her life was ruined. The only thing that kept replaying in her mind was the warning that Geet had given her ten years ago as she had walked out of her life.
'Karma is a bitch.'
It was a simple, four word statement. How as she to know that those four words held so much power and weight? How as she supposed to know?
She heard the door to her room close and then the privacy curtain was pushed aside. Naintara knew it was one of the nurses making the usual rounds. Every few hours it was the same thing. Her nurse would come in, ask how she was feeling and then take her blood pressure and pulse. Naintara was in no mood to be bothered.
"I'm fine," she called as she shifted slightly in her bed.
She heard the privacy curtain be pulled back to its original position behind her.
"I don't want to be bothered please," Naintara requested.
She closed her eyes wanting to shut out the world around her, wanting to shut out all the people around her at the hospital who were trying to help her. She didn't deserve to be helped – not after what she had done.
"Tara," a voice called.
Immediately, her eyes sprang open as her heart stopped at the sound of the voice. She knew who that voice belonged to – she knew it all to well. Holding her breath she slowly turned to see who was there, hoping that her ears were just playing tricks on her. However, when her eyes saw the person before her, dread filled every fiber of her being as her blood ran cold.
"Yash…" she said in such a low whisper she barely heard it herself.
"Hello Tara," he said as he took a step towards her.
Naintara's eyes went wide in shock as she used her legs to push herself into a sitting position.
"Don't…don't come any closer," she said.
A chilling smile came over his lips before he spoke, "I don't think anyone's been closer to you than I have Tara baby."
He continued walking towards her and Naintara panicked when her back hit the bed frame. She knew she had nowhere to go.
"Please…please…" Naintara pleaded, "Please don't do this…"
"I love you Tara," Yash said.
"No…please…" Naintara begged.
As he took steps that brought him closer to her, Naintara inched off of the bed until she was standing. She tried not to wince in the pain that shot through her body as she did so.
"I didn't stop the last time you begged me," Yash said with a smirk, "What makes you think I'll stop this time?"
Gathering up every ounce of energy she had, Naintara ran for the door. However, she caught her just as she passed him. His arm reached out and grabbed her wrist.
"Ah!" Naintara screamed as he put painful pressure on one of her wounds.
"I don't want to hurt you baby," he said, as he kissed her cheek.
Naintara pulled back, disgusted by his touch on her body.
"Let me go," she asked, "Please let me go…"
Tears clouded her vision as she felt herself loosing the fight.
"How can I let you go baby?" he asked, leaning in close to her ear, "I can't do that…I can't take the chance because you'll tell the police about what I did…and I can't have that."
"I won't say anything…I promise…I won't say anything," Naintara pleaded.
"I wish I could believe you Tara baby," Yash said as he sniffed her hair. "You're so enticing."
Naintara brought her knee up and pushed as hard as she could into his groin. She caught him by surprise which made him stumble back. Naintara knew that she couldn't make it to the door in time because he'd be right behind her. She instead ran to her bed to grab the intercom that led to the nurses station. She was just about to reach for it when she felt him tug violently at her hair.
"Ah!" she screamed as she landed on the cold hospital floor with a thud.
"You bitch!" he roared.
He advanced towards her so Naintara used her arms to drag her uncooperative body back and away from Yash. She felt her hospital gown begin to come loose behind her. Naintara prayed for help as he inched closer.
"Naintara…it's me…Geet…are you ok in there?" Naintara heard Geet ask as the intercom came to life.
GG.
Relief washed over her for just a second. She was about to speak when she felt Yash's hands go around her throat choking her, making it impossible for any sound to come out.
"Keep quiet or I swear I'll kill you," Yash warned in a hushed tone.
"Naintara…say something," Geet's voice came again.
Naintara looked around her to see what she could do to get out of his hold. Her eyes landed on her over bed table. She stretched to reach it and when her hand came into contact with the wheels of the device, she pulled as hard as she could causing it to clatter loudly against the tiled floor.
"Naina!" she heard Geet yell.
The action startled Yash and he let go of her throat.
"Help me! GG…help me…Yash don't…" Naintara said.
She watched in horror and braced herself for pain as he swung his arm into the air only to bring it crashing down on her face. She could feel almost every bone in his hand as it made contact with her cheek, leaving it stinging.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
When Geet heard Naintara scream, it was like all of time stopped. A million and one questions raced through her mind as fear gripped her. As much as Geet had fought getting emotionally involved with Naintara again, she couldn't help it. At this very moment the only thing on her mind was that her Naina was in trouble and she had no idea how to help her.
As the milliseconds passed her Geet assessed the situation. She stood at the nurses station with everyone else. Even if they ran to Naintara's room at the very end of the hall, they could be too late. It would only take a second for him to hurt Naintara, and it would take them a lot longer than one second to get to her.
God help me.
Then, like an answer to her silent prayer, she saw him coming out of a patients room. Her eternal hero – Adi. She realized he was on her floor for a consult on a patient who was having some cardiac problems during her pregnancy. The patient had an enlarged heart which was straining her heart especially in the final trimester of her pregnancy.
"Adi!" Geet called.
He looked at her with a smile, but that smile quickly disappeared as he sensed the change in her voice.
"Naina!" Geet yelled, "Room 628…help her!"
Geet finally breathed as she saw Adi race into Naintara's room.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Naintara felt tears pool in her eyes as Yash's hand came down on her face again. She tried hard to fight, she tried hard not to cry but the tears of pain and fear blurred her vision. She saw him raise his hand to strike her. As he brought it down with great speed, Naintara closed her eyes and tried to shield her face from the impact, but she didn't feel anything.
It wasn't until she heard a clattering noise that she opened her eyes. She saw a man standing over Yash's crumpled body on the floor.
"You son of a…" another man dressed in a white lab coat yelled.
Naintara immediately pushed herself into the corner of the room behind a small sofa and drew her knees to her chest. She watched as the man grabbed Yash by the collar, pulling him to his feet.
Then, suddenly the room was full of people as they came bursting in through the door – Naintara recognized all of them.
"Naina…" she heard Geet call.
As much as she wanted to yell, Naintara couldn't get a single sound to leave her lips. Instead she watched silently as her brother grabbed Yash by the collar and pulled towards him before punching in square in the face.
"You bas***d!" Maan yelled, "How dare you touch my sister!"
"Tara…I love you…" Yash said as another punch hit his gut.
She watched as her brother and Arjun beat Yash as the police officers who had interviewed her earlier tried to stop them. A punch there, a kick here, a curse here, a threat there.
"Naina!" she heard Geet call again.
It was then Naina realized that they couldn't see her from where they all stood because the sofa hid her body from their eyes.
"G…GG," she called loud enough.
She watched as Geet turned her face and the instant their eyes locked, she could see the relief on Geet's face.
"Oh thank God," Geet cried as she rushed over and took Naintara into her arms.
Naintara grabbed onto Geet as if her life depended on it and began to sob, the tears not hesitating to spill. It was only in Geet's arms that she finally felt safe again.
--------Flash Back--------
Naintara sat huddled on the floor, her knees drawn up to her chest, next to a large towel rack in the pool house of Khurana Mansion. She had wanted to run away after she fought with her brother. She was so mad at him. He had said that her mom and dad didn't love her, that they didn't want her. She knew that wasn't true. All Mommies and Daddies loved their kids – all of them. She knew her Mommy and Daddy loved her – they loved her a lot – but they were just busy that's why they couldn't be with her and her brother.
When her brother had said that her parents hated her and didn't want her she cried and stormed out after saying she never wanted to see her brother again. He was being a big meanie and he wasn't being nice.
Not knowing where to go, she had seen the pool house from her room and instantly ran to it. It was late afternoon when she had gone in there to get away from her brother. At first, she loved the idea of hiding away in the pool house, it meant she could go swimming whenever she wanted. However, as the sun began to set she grew more and more scared.
Eventually, it was too dark for her to move around and find a light switch. She was scared of the dark because she didn't know what would come out and get her. The darkness was her biggest fear because she felt that anything could come out and get her. It was also her biggest fear because she knew she couldn't escape. Tears began to sting her eyes as she wished feverishly for her brother to find her. As the wind picked up outside, she wished she'd said something when her brother had come in looking for her instead of hiding in a toy chest.
I want my Bhai.
She didn't know long she cried but eventually she fell asleep. It was the sound of the door opening that jarred her away a while later. Instantly, she stiffened and held her breath.
They're here…the monsters are here to get me.
Tears pooled in her eyes as she tried to fight them but couldn't. She sniffled unwillingly as her nose began to run.
"Hello…is someone there," she heard someone call.
"No," Naintara said, hoping the person would go away.
A second later, the room was flooded with light causing Naintara to shield her eyes from the brightness. Once they adjusted, she opened her eyes to see a very pretty lady standing in front of her.
"Well hello there," the lady said sweetly.
Naintara didn't know what took over her but before she knew it, she threw herself at the lady and hugged her as if her life depended on it.
"Shh…It's ok sweetie," the friendly lady said as she hugged Naintara back.
A minute later, Naintara felt awkward holding onto a lady she didn't know. She pulled back and looked at the floor ashamed.
"I'm Geet," the lady said with a smile, "What's your name?"
"Naintara," she answered a few seconds later.
"That's pretty," the lady, Geet said.
That began a wonderful conversation which gave Naintara the nickname of Naina. It had been her birthday that night and she was so happy that her brother and Geet had planned a party for her. They had dinner and then she got to stay up and watch her favorite cartoon – The Little Mermaid. Later, when she went to bed she asked if her new friend – GG – could tuck her in.
Naintara had changed into her Care Bear pajamas and said good night to her brother when Geet walked in.
"Did you have fun tonight?" Geet asked as she sat on the side of the bed and tucked the covers in around Naintara.
"Yes…thank you GG," Naintara said.
"Don't mention it sweetie…," Geet said. "Good night."
Geet ran a loving hand over her head, and leaned in to turn off the light.
"I'm afraid of the dark," Naintara admitted.
"Don't be scared, I'm here," Geet said.
Naintara snuggled into her bed as she held onto Geet's hand and drifted off to sleep.
--------Present--------
She was dropped back into reality when she heard Yash speak again.
"Tara…tell them…I love you and you love me too…" Yash said.
Naintara put her hands over her ears refusing to hear what he had to say.
"Maan!" Sameera yelled suddenly.
Naintara looked up to see Sameera standing in the door way of her room, dressed in a hospital gown and attached to IV pole. From there she looked at her brother who was bleeding from his mouth, probably because Yash had punched him.
"You think one little punch is going to stop me?" Maan asked sarcastically.
With that Maan swung his arm and made contact with Yash's face as blood gushed from his mouth.
"Maan!" Geet yelled.
Naintara, as well as everyone else, were thrown off by Geet's sudden outburst. She looked to Geet who had an expression of worry on her face with her eyes being focused on something past Maan. It was then that Naintara saw Sameera swaying behind Maan by the door of the room. Her hand was touching her forehead as she first took a uneasy steps back right before stumbling backwards.
"Sam!" Maan yelled.
Sameera had almost fallen but Maan got to her before she hit the ground.
"Sam! Sam honey wake up," Maan called as she tried to shake Sameera.
A swift movement caught the corner of Naintara's eyes as she saw Arjun grasp Yash's shoulders just before kneeing him in the groin. Since everyone was totally stunned at what had just happened, Arjun took advantage of the situation. Instantly, Yash crumpled onto the floor in pain.
It was only then that Naintara finally let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Everything happened so fast Geet was too stunned to even move.
"Geet…help her!" Maan yelled with Sameera still in his arms unconscious.
Geet felt torn, unsure of what to do. On one hand she knew that Sameera and her unborn child needed her at that very moment, but on the other she also knew that she couldn't just walk away from Naina at that moment because she needed her too. As Naina clung to Geet and Maan looked at her with pleading eyes, she was lost.
She felt a hand on her shoulder, looking up she saw Arjun kneeling next to her. He held his arms slightly open indicating that he could take Naina. Geet knew it was the only option so she gently pushed Naina away from her and into Arjun's waiting arms.
"Arjun…" she heard Naina cry softly as she immediately clung to the young man.
"Geet please…" Maan called again.
Seeing that Naina was safe in Arjun's arms, Geet turned her full attention to Sameera who lay with her head cradled in Maan's lap.
As Geet walked towards Sameera and Maan, she saw the officers holding a hand-cuffed Yash off to the side allowing her space to work. As she passed him, she stopped in front of him, looking at him from head to toe. Already he was bleeding from his nose and mouth, not to mention the other cuts he had over his arms and face. She could also see the places where he would have giant black-blue bruises from the assault he'd received from not only Maan but Arjun and Adi as well.
Before she knew what she was doing, Geet felt her hand come into contact with the side of his face. She's slapped him and it probably shocked her more than it shocked him.
"Geet…" Maan called bringing her back to reality.
Geet blinked a few times clearing her mind as she raced over to Sameera.
"Get a gurney," she told Adi who moved quickly.
Kneeling beside Sameera Geet put her hand to her neck to check her pulse. Sameera's pulse was weak, thready and irregular. Already Geet knew that her blood pressure would be significantly low.
Adi returned with a gurney and two nurses who quickly came and lifted Sameera onto it.
"Take her to room 603," Geet ordered, "I'll be right there."
As the nurses and Maan walked away Geet turned to the officers who still stood off to the side in the room.
"Get him out of here," she ordered.
"Right away," Officer Steve said. "We'll be back soon for a statement."
Geet simply shook her head as they walked out dragging Yash with them.
"Tara…don't do this…I love you," Yash called.
From the corner of her eye, she saw Naina cringe further into Arjun's hold as her face contorted with disgust.
"Help her get settled…please…" she said softly as she leaned up to whisper into his ear.
"Of course," Adi said.
She felt him take her hand into his and squeeze it reassuringly. Giving him a quick smile, Geet rushed out of the room towards Sameera's room.
-------------
Geet held Sameera's chart as she made notes. She checked the flow rate on Sameera's IV and made sure she was connected to all the monitors properly. Making a few final adjustments, she closed her chart and spoke to Maan softly because Sameera was still sleeping.
"Can I talk to you outside?" she asked.
"Sure," Maan said as she nodded his head.
She stepped outside first as she saw Maan lean in and place a kiss on Sameera's forehead and whisper something. She was waiting for him in the hall when he exited the room leaving the door open.
"Is everything ok?" Maan asked.
"Yes and no," Geet said.
"What do you mean? Is the baby ok?" he asked, worry laced on his voice.
"For now, yes the baby is fine," Geet said. "But you are going to have to change if you want Sameera's pregnancy to go as smoothly as possible."
"I have to change? I don't know what you mean," Maan said.
"It's clear that when you are in trouble or in a difficult situation, it affects Sam heavily," Geet said. "She had two incidents of fainting within a few hours of each other, and both times it was because you got into an altercation with someone."
"I thought they raped my sister," Maan said angrily in his defense.
"Look…I'm not here to judge why you did what you did…frankly…it doesn't matter to me," Geet said. "What I'm saying is that it matters to Sam because she worries for you."
"She always did worry too much," Maan said as he looked inside at his sleeping wife.
"That's why you need to change," Geet repeated. "Stress isn't good for her especially since she's had past complication with early miscarriages."
"Do you think…" Maan began but couldn't finish the sentence.
"I don't mean to scare you but I'm just telling it to you as it is," Geet said. "I'd suggest you not go see Naina…umm…Naintara until Sam is fully recovered."
"I can't do that…I have to see her…" Maan said.
"If you go to see her Sam will follow and it won't be good for her or the baby because you're likely to lose it," Geet said. "You need to calm down."
"But how can I?" he asked enraged, "Some scum raped my sister…my baby sister Geet!"
"I know……" Geet began.
She was cut off by Sameera's voice.
"Maan…" she called in a groggy voice.
"I mean it Maan," Geet began again, this time in a more hushed tone, "You find your happy place or whatever but you have to stay calm in order for her to stay calm."
"But Naintara…" Maan protested.
"I'll take care of her," Geet assured.
Maan nodded his head and before he could say anything, her pager went off.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"No…no I won't do it…" Naintara said.
She sat on her bed, freshly re-stitched and all her wounds (old and new) redressed. In his attack Yash had managed to bust her lip once again and leave new scratches and bruises all over her arms and legs. She held an ice pack over her right eye which throbbed in pain.
"You have to talk to the police…," Arjun said.
"No…no I won't…I can't do it…" Naintara said. "Not without………"
Tears filled her eyes and spilled as sobs took over her once again. The salt from the tears stung as they hit the fresh wounds on her face.
"Shhh…it's ok…I'm here," Arjun said.
Naintara felt his arms go around her shoulder and she instantly grabbed onto him, clawing away at his shirt as she hid her face in his chest and cried.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
As soon as the elevator doors opened Geet nearly ran down to the nurses station where she saw Adi standing, leaning against the wall.
"Adi," she called.
At the sound of her voice he pushed himself from the wall and began walking towards her.
"What happened? Is she ok?" Geet asked.
"She's fine," Adi said as he put an arm over her shoulder and began to guide her down the hall.
"Where are you taking me?" Geet asked.
"Conference room," Adi said.
"But…" Geet began.
She didn't need to finish her sentence because the conference room was directly behind the nurses station. When Adi opened the door, Geet saw Officer Steve and Bill sitting in wait.
Geet frowned at them.
"You guys are back? So soon…" Geet asked.
"We had called for a squad car so they took Yash in…we stayed to get Naintara's statement," Officer Bill said.
"Ok…then what are you waiting for?" Geet asked.
"She won't give us a statement of the incident," he said.
"What?" Geet asked shocked. "Why had do you mean?"
"She won't talk to us," Officer Steve said. "At all…"
Geet was confused and irritated at the fact that Naina wouldn't talk to the police and give them her statement so they could proceed with charges against Yash.
"She won't talk to them, not without you," Adi said.
"What?" Geet asked, feeling like a broken record.
"She keeps saying that she needs her GG or else she won't talk," Adi informed.
Geet closed her eyes and sighed knowing that she was about to get sucked back into the lives of the Khurana's more than she'd bargained for.
Who are you kidding? You were sucked in the second you saw Naina in the ER.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"I need her Arjun…I can't do this without her," Naintara cried.
"But you have me…" he said.
"It's not the same…you don't understand," Naintara said frustrated.
"Help me understand," Arjun pleaded.
Naintara looked at him and wiped the tears from her eyes before she spoke.
"I've only been this scared one other time in my life…scared to the point where I feel like I'm suffocating…," Naintara began, "The last time it happened it was GG who helped me…I need her again."
Then, once again for the nth time, her eyes filled with tears and Arjun took her into his arms. I while later, she heard the door creak open. Looking up, she saw the officers from before enter.
"I told you…" Naintara began.
As they entered the room she saw someone enter behind them.
"GG," Naintara called softly as Geet's face came into view.
Naintara gave her a weak smile as she felt Arjun take a step away from the bed.
"What's this I hear about you not wanting to give a statement?" Geet asked.
Tears blurred her vision as she spoke, "I'm scared GG…so scared."
Geet walked over to her bed and ran a hand lovingly over her head before taking Naintara's hands into her own.
"You don't need to be scared, I'm here," Geet said.
Relief and love washed over Naintara as she threw her arms around Geet's waist and hugged her tight.
When she broke apart, she took a tissue and wiped the tears and calmed herself down.
"Ok I'm ready…," she said.
Naintara gripped Geet's hand hard as the officers took seats in chairs on the right of her bed.
"Can you please tell us what happened two nights ago?" Officer Bill asked.
