OMG one of my favourite films!! Since my childhood I've seen it a million times...even used to dance infront of the mirror to Morni, pretending to be Sridevi 😆
Anyway, I'm not surprised that the film flopped because it was ahead of its time. I can understand why it was hard for people to digest. But it earned status of a classic later on and was given the appreciation that it deserved.

IMO Lamhe was one of Yash Chopra's finest. The chemistry between Sridevi and Anil was simply wonderful. Sridevi has got to be the queen of double roles and Anil gave a very mature performance. I cannot believe he was robbed of a filmfare award. Anyway, they were well supported by Waheeda ji and Anupam Kher who equally deserved praise for their respective performances.

I don't think the bold theme was disturbing in any way. If anyone has seen the film then Anupam Kher's dialogues to Anil Kapoor towards the end of the film are a perfect explanation as to why there is nothing wrong with Anil Kapoor falling in love with the younger Sridevi, despite the fact that he once felt for her mother. Viren loved Pallavi but she never loved him in return and there was no relation other than friendship between them.

On the other hand, the younger Sri (Pooja) falls for Viren and he begins to feel the same. But he never allows himself to let go of the past and accept his feelings. Gradually he realizes that Pooja is an individual and he has fallen for her and that it has nothing to do with her mother. I like how in the climax he describes how her smile is her own, her eyes and the sparkle in them are her own as well. And when he says, "tum tum ho...aur tum meri ho." Such simple dialogues but very sweet.

So yeah. After that my rambling...just gotta say, I luv the film 😆 and the music was great . A simple but beautiful love story which was was ahead of its time 👍🏼

oh god! ... i forgot the pallo guy ... I think he became some sort of a legend after this movie ... His pallo, pallo has to go down as one of the classic moments of indian cinema

... totally destroyed all his hopes of having any sort of career

agreed...the climax was pure magic...LOVE it when anupam kher starts singing Kabhie kabhie in the end...hes known mostly for his comedy in the film, but i thought his character was much more than that. His was the voice of reason throughout the movie...the guy who saw everything objectively, the huge emotional support for viren, daijaan and pooja and someone who just nails the hammer on virens head whenever needed...basically, just a selfless friend who wants the best things for Viren, pallavi and Pooja.

Movie was released along with Ajay Devgan's first movie Phool aur Kaante ... Anil Kapoor and all suggest the producer to postpone the movie bcz they were so sure that Lamhe will be hit and newcomers shldnt take chance in front of Yash Raj movie and big star's movie but happened just other way ... Lamhe Flopped and Phool aur Kaante was Blockbuster

i love both movies ...

Lamhe was so bold in subject ...

lots of indian movies which didnt work at Box office but later became cult movies like Andaaz apna apna ... few days back only came to know that AAA did Not do Well at Box office, I always thought it was a Hit and today it is every one's fav movie and one of the best comedy

That's very true. Anupam Kher's character was definitely the voice of reason in the film. He had everyone's best interest at heart and wanted them all to be happy. On the surface he was suppose to be this crazy guy who behaved in a child like manner at times but deep down he was much more than that. He saw everything and everyone- be it his dear friend Viren, Daaijaan and his buddy Pooja.

This has to be one of Anupam Kher's best performances and it's a shame that in recent times his roles have not done justice to his acting talent. But yes, I loved how he starts singing kabhi kabhi at the end. That was beautiful.

Btw, thanks for opening this discussion :)
