Soon after Chanakya found out that one of his friends was sheltering the wife and children of Amartya...he immediately captured them...and announced death sentence to his friend,who had infact betrayed him.Chanakya knew that Amartya would never allow his friend to die.So Amartya presented himself before Chanakya and asked to be given the death sentence; instead of his friend.Chanakya asked him whether he wanted his wife and children, along with his friend to be released.Amartya agreed , as he thought he would be put to death anyways.
But Chanakya asked for a different price from Amartya.He asked Amartya whether he would serve as the prime minister of Chandragupta Maurya.Chanakya knew that once if Amartya took up the post, he would even die for CGM, such was his commitment and devotion to his work.
Amartya readily agreed.So while Amartya took up the post of MahaMantri of CGM, Chanakya took a post of a smaller minster, and finding ample time in his hands, wrote all his theories and ideas, more commonly known as 'Chanakya Neeti ' or 'Kautilya Shastra'.
