Anushka has just completed 10 months in Bollywood after she made her debut in Aditya Chopra's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. When someone asked her how does she feel to be the baby of Bollywood, the sharp-witted Anushka replied, "Asin is the baby. Her movie Ghajini released after my Rab Ne..." When told that Asin has already done a dozen movies down South before she came to Mumbai, Anushka replied, "But in Bollywood, she's still a newcomer. And since she came after me, she's the newest babe in town."

Am I the only one really bothered by Anuskha's insinuation that Asin is a "babe" (by which I think she means "infant") in Bollywood as if Bollywood or the Hindi film cinema, to be more accurate, is the be-all, end-all? I'm no Asin fan by any measure of the yardstick but she's no infant in the Indian film industry. Most critics who have watched her previous work acknowledge her to be a great actress. Also, considering the fact that Asin has a lot more experience in the film industry than Anuskha does, I would say Anuskha is relatively more naive about the politics that rule the film industry rather than Asin. Asin is an actress: her talent and her knowledge should not be undermined simply because she's talking in a different language in her film. I hate it when people associate a sense of supremacy with the Hindi film industry because no, it is NOT superior. The actors and actresses who work in film industries of other languages are just as talented and I do not think they should be considered babies only because they happen to be speaking in a different language.

I concur. On the contrary, I happen to think that South film industry contains some of the most talented actors in India, as oppose to Bollywood, which happens to pluck their 'actors' right out of the modelling industry.

Seems like Anushka got a bit defensive being called a newbie. Perhaps she's still bitter that Asin snatched her 'Best Female Debutant' Award at practically every Award show (not that it matters anyway).
