Do you remember the dhun played by Amitabh Bachhan on mouth organ in SHOLAY when he used to look at Jaya Bhaduri? Do you know these very notes were used to make song 'Aane wala pal jane wala hai' (Golmaal: RD Burman, ), now compare that song with opening notes of Yaro sun lo dil ki (Rok sako to rok lo: Jatin Lalit), do they sound similar?.... because they are all based on raag Kirvani.
we all agree that there is nothihg wrong in rag based compositions.
but that does not mean that they are copies at all though they may sound similar.
there are a finite # of factors which influence a MD when he/she is
composing a song.
1. his own knowledge and exposure to different kinds of music,
2.public taste
3. the demands of the filmmaker.
So for example HR is a young guy in his early 30's so he has been exposed to a whole body of Hindi music (SDB, RDB, LP, OP, etc...) not to mention western music and of course Pakistani and Arabic music.
So naturally, these influences will show up at various times in his music. I think that sometimes a composer does not even realize where his inspiration is coming from when he is writing music. Now with the internet, it is easy for people to root these things out. But
in the old days when a song seemed heavily influenced by a genre, I don't know if there was such protest. I know that a lot of Bengali composers were influenced by Tagore as well as baul music. Sometimes old Tamil songs sounded like Salil chowdhury songs or maybe vice versa.

I would love to know of what other members think in this regard: how do you define plagiariam, raaga & folk song based influence so on.

Good job, N Sinha. Always interested to hear from people like you and so many others who are knowledgeable and write on the suject...
Naushad (one of my favorites) used a lot of ragas in his songs. I also simply love the compositions of Madan Mohan and Jaidev.
God bless these composers and all the others who've given us such great music over the years...

As a sidenote, Anu Malik has always maintained that he was "inspired" by older music and never copied 😆 😆 . I dont believe him just like I dont believe others who maintain that position...

Many thanks for responding .
Anu Malik got outcasted as copy cat, while this appears to be true, humbly I would like to draw attention towards his great work as well.
He has given raaga based melodious songs in 80s, do you know there was a song called 'aa jara mere humnasheen' in 1984 by Mohd Rafi, the inter lude of this song was latter used to make 'chori chori ye nazare mili' in 1999.
Both by AM, also song mere humsafar mere paas aa from refugee has flavour of Kalyan. Another I mentioned is mujhe kuch kahna hai(Shivranjani)>
His father was a classical singer Sardar Malik & he has given some teaching to his son it seems. But as you see, his efforts go unnoticed because of his copycat impression, this is what HR must avoid at this point, if he wants to make a long lasting impression.

Many thanx for reading & responding,
In my opinion the notes are dissimilar to fall in category of 1 raaga though I won't be surprised if they are mix of 2or more raagas, because of the time they come from and the musicians we had........
I've referred your Q to a music expert.
