I think its not correct to tag such tunes with plagiarism.. while their are other songs from the first note to the last is lifted.... no imagination, no creativity - even the arrangement is not changed... that is plagiarism for sure... And I think that these 2 cases need to be treated differently!

Most importantly = there are composers like Preetam and a few others, who dont even give any credits to these lifts and when caught simply deny the fact! This definitely is a question mark on the integrity of these people towards their profession!!!

Thanks, Jayaji. That's what I was trying to explain.

Thanks Sinhaji for a nice topic. It's difficult to convince sometimes to people like us who do not know much about music(in depth) the difference between copy and inspiration, but you tried it in a very simple launguage and it is really kind of you.

Please keep starting topics related to music, we missed you and good topics by you for a long time.

We talk a lot about copying vs. inspiration in Indian music but I thought
that you would like to know that it is done a lot in American music too
(both Micheal Jackson and Van Halen borrowed from Hall and Oates and
told him so)

I think that what people resent is when someone tries to pretend like they
haven't been copying, sampling, or inspired by music by others. Also
there are clear copyright law on this matter so if the copyright holder can
sue if they mind.

Re: Rabindrasangeets, the songs are in the public domain at this point for
sure and I am not clear as to the state of British/Indian? copyright law
when he created them so i don't know if there were copyright violations
when others used it without permission. Somebody could follow up with
Santiniketan on this.

As an IP attorney, I could of course argue both sides of most cited
examples of copying.
