Designer woes
Two finalists of Zee's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005 are unhappy with the clothes designed by celebrity designer Vikram Phadnis. The two conservative Maharastrian girls, Swananda and Nihira are uncomfortable wearing the short sexy skirts and off-shoulder tops. So, the duo has decided to design their own outfits...

Doordarshan to launch its reality show 'Kalakarz' on Sunday
New Delhi: The reality show bandwagon rolls on! With the success of several reality shows on various television channels like the Indian Idol, Fame Gurukul and the Indian Idol 2 (Sony) and The Sa Re Ga Ma Challenge (Zee), it was only a matter of time that the National Channel Doordarshan too got "bitten by the reality show bug".

In a move perhaps prompted by its wide reach across the country,.

Doordarshan will next week begin telecast of a Talent Hunt Show to select the 'Best actors' from among thosands of "wannabe actors".

Titled "Kalakarz", the talent show, to be telecast from November 27, will conduct a nation-wide talent search for people who think they can make it in high stress, high-stakes world of acting, sources in the channel said.

The first episode of the reality show will be telecast on November 27 on Sundays at 2100 Hrs on the National Network, DD-1.

The programme, being co-produced by Doordarshan along with M/S Unit Box, will be anchored by TV artists, Hussain and the vivacious Shraddha Nigam, the sources said.

The selection of the winner in each episode will decided by the viewers through SMS votes.

Out of a total of 1.5 lakh people who applied through IVRS, a few selected will be shortlisted to appear in each episode of the show, to try their luck for the top notch.

Well-known filmmaker Amol Palekar will be the guest judge who will help viewers make their choice by assessing the contestants.

One of the stars from the galaxy of well-known film/ TV artists will join him in each episode.

'Sa Re Ga Ma' still challenges new kids on the block
(Posted on 9 November 2005)

Shah Rukh Khan's birthday sent the channels into frenzy of hyper-activity. Star Gold was the quickest. They acquired rights for Nasreen Munni Kabeer's new documentary on the star, and screened it. The result was quite pleasing. Rather than have all and sundry speaking about the star we had one comprehensive view of the situation.

Another Khan, Salman, dominated the proceedings on Zee's Sa Re Ga Ma Challenge. The compliments showered on Salman must have made the actor wince. Every contestant and judge tripped over each other to shower encomiums on the visibly-embarrassed actor.

Himesh Reshammiya outdid others when it came to on-screen fawning. "Whatever you are for me, everyone knows." Salman retorted, "Please specify what you mean. Don't spoil my reputation."

He was so bowled over by the quality of singing that he stayed on till 4 in morning after finishing the recording at midnight to hear the contestants.

"When someone of Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia's caliber says he can't choose the best among the contestants since they're all so good, I feel my life is made," sighs the man behind the epoch-making music contest.

He has been around. Yup, Gajendra Singh is the original music man on Indian television. His two musical shows Closeup Antakshari and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa have defined and re-invented the Indian music contest on television.

And now with the perennially-popular Sa Re Ga Ma Pa being re-vamped into the massively aggressive Sa Re Ga Ma Challenge, Singh can sing another tune.

****

Media-shy Gajendra Singh welcomes the show's new wave of popularity. "When we decided to revamp Sa Re Ga Ma Pa into its new format we had one basic target in mind. The contestants should have direct access to the composers so that their ultimate destination - film singing - would be apparent to these hopefuls from the time they enter our contest. That's why we got a whole range and spectrum of composers - from the classically inclined Ismail Durbar to the beat-oriented Himesh Reshammiya to the melody-motivated Jatin-Lalit and the all-rounder Aadesh Shrivastava - to serve as judges. I'm happy and proud to say these judges have taken the talented contestants under their wings and groomed them into a kind of stardom even before they pass through the winning post. One of our finalists Vineet has sung all the songs for Zayed Khan under the supervision of Himesh Reshammiya for a film Rocky."

The threat from Sony's twin contests Fame Gurukul and Indian Idol looms large over Sa Re Ga Ma. But Gajendra isn't the least bit intimidated. "I feel they on Sony have copied us. But their focus isn't on singing. It's on face value. I've been doing a musical talent scouting contest since 1994. I virtually grew with my channel Zee. You'd be shocked to know what kind of money I'm offered by rival channels to join them. But I feel abandoning Sa Re Ga Ma would be like orphaning my own baby."

****

He dismisses Sony's twin tune shows. "Indian Idol is all about marketing and glamour. I can't see Qazi or any of the other winners on Fame Gurkul acquiring the durable fame of our contestants like Shreya Ghosal, Kunal Ganjawala and Shaan. Their star-contestants like Rahul Vaidya and Prajakta were on Sa Re Ga Ma first. Maybe they were lured into the other shows by the prize money and the promise of recordings… Well, let me tell you our 12 Sa Re Ga Ma Challenge finalists have already been signed for an album by Sa Re Ga Ma HMV. Besides, they're being absorbed by the judges who are in a position to give them breaks. I've more than 10 years of experience in this field. I can recognize talent in budding singers. I'd like to feel our show gives them a chance to really come into their own."

A lot of watchers feel Sa Re Ga Ma Challenge focuses too much on the bickering and coochie-cooing of the star-judges. "That's going to change as the show reaches its grand finale," promises Gajendra Singh. "Now the focus is going to be on the singers."

****

Anchor Shaan will remain unchanged though. "Why should he want to leave, and why should we? Shaan is so endearing. He's been with us for four years. And look how he took over from Sonu Nigam who people said was irreplaceable."

In about three months, Gajendra Singh also returns with Zee's other TRP-booster Closeup Antakshari. "I can promise you it'll be bigger and brighter than before."
For some strange reason John Abraham bit into Akshay Kumar's shoulder while talking to Cyrus Broacha on MTV's Big Picture. Maybe John was hungry. Maybe he needed to sink his teeth into a good role (and mistook his co-star's shoulder for one). Maybe John has a peculiar way expressing his warmth to male co-stars.

There's one warm lady who I welcome on TV. "And now I'm returning to my Gujarati roots," smiles Asha Parekh. "The Gujarati serial Akhanda Saubhagyavati, which I'm producing, goes on ETV Gujarati this week. It's a proud moment for me. I've always felt my work and my art should keep me close to my roots. There's a myth that actors do regional films only when they're on the way up or way out. That's such a parochial attitude. Latabai who's our greatest, has sung in so many Indian languages. If Lata can do it, why not Asha?" she jokes.

… And reveals how even at the peak of her career she acted in three Gujarati films. "My first Gujarati film, coincidentally called Akhanda Saubhagyavati was a smash success. That was 40 years ago when I was really busy with my Hindi film career. Not once did I think I was going to compromise my career by doing a film in my own language."
Akhand Saubhagyavati will be the third Gujarati serial produced by Asha Parekh. "I had produced Jyoti for Doordarshan which was a kind of landmark for regional television. Then I did Nari Tu Na Hari for ETV Gujarati… And now I'm back with a new daily."

Asha will neither direct nor act in her new serial. She's also going full-steam ahead with plans to make a Hindi serial with an army background for a major channel. "But right now it's my Gujarati serial which excites me. Earlier we made the mistake of undermining television as a medium. Today we're making the same mistake by undermining regional cinema and television. Look at the reach of Bhojpuri, Bengali and Tamil cinema. TV too is has a niche significance. There's room for programming in every genre and language. The sooner we realize it the better."

"I must say it was a good experience," says the host with the most Amitabh Bachchan about the latest celebrity special on KBC, bringing together the iconic Sania Mirza and Lara Dutta.

Revealing details of the unexpected synthesis of sports and cinema, Star's COO Samir Nair says, "We've got Sania and Lara together as a Children's day special. Why these two? Well, Sania needs no justification. She's a youth icon, and though she's the queen of endorsements, she needs no endorsement. Getting her on the hot seat was a challenge, and we proved equal to it. We needed a spunky spirited woman of today to complement Sania on the hot seat. Lara fitted the bill perfectly. She's young articulate and intelligent. They're very, very watchable together. Both Lara and Sania represent the spirit of youth and are role models for kids this Children's Day. Like Sania, Lara started very young. She became Miss Universe when she was in her teens. Ask Mr Bachchan, Lara and Sania are dynamite together."
The Children's Day special to be telecast on Sunday 13 November, has many interesting interludes, not only with the two star guests but also with their respective families.

Says Nair, "Sania's father is on the show along with her mother and sister. Everyone always wanted to know what Mr Mirza is like. Mr Bachchan finds out for us. AB talks quite extensively with Sania's dad about many subjects including her money."

Sania's dad reveals how expensive it's for the star-daughter's entourage to be carted from one international venue for the game to another.

"But the best part of the show is the chemistry between the two ladies… very, very appealing."

How much prize money do the dynamic duo finally obtain? No one's telling. But Sania and Lara apparently go up to the 1 crore prize, and then lose money by giving the wrong answer.

Star has at least two more celebrity specials lined up this season on KBC. Hrithik Roshan will appear with Priyanka Chopra, and if all goes well, we'll see Abhishek on the hot seat with the mega-anchor in the grand finale of KBC. But for that, the junior Bachchan needs to get over his nervousness about the experience.

It could be Twinkle. Usually a person who performed neither very good not very bad gets dumped. This is because some people vote for truely good performances and some others vote for their favourites who performed poorly to make sure they are not eliminated. This is what seemed to have happened in the first two elimination round.

The other way to see is that contestants who are not much talked about, good or bad, and do not have hype seem to be left out. In such case, it could be Sharib, Ujjaini or Himani. What say others?

Moving on to another popular music contest - Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge. As it races to a finish in January 2006, the surprises spill out with frenzied furtiveness.

After Salman Khan, the next celebrity judge is music aficionado Sanjay Leela Bhansali who will be seen on 2 and 3 December on Sa Re GA Ma Pa Challenge.

Confirming the casting croon, the show's producer-director Gajendra Singh said, "We want music-minded showbiz icons to come and encourage the finalists. And what better choice than Bhansali? It must be remembered that Shreya Ghosal was picked up by Sanjay-ji from Sa Re GA Ma Pa. When he agreed to be a judge we were thrilled."

Bhansali will host a Laxmikant-Pyarelal special on Sa Re GA Ma Pa Challenge. He's been diligently sifting through dozens of the composing duo's songs to find just the right tunes for the finalists.

"We wanted the songs to be peppy and popular so that the contestants would be challenged and audiences enthused," reveals Gajendra Singh.

Last week the 10 Sa Re GA Ma Pa finalists Ujjaini, Paresh, Debajit, Nihira, Twinkle, Himani, Rajiv, Hemchandra, Sharid and Vinit drove down to the outskirts of Mumbai where Sanjay Bhansali is holidaying, to meet the director.

"It was essentially to establish a comfort level, to let Sanjay-ji hear the contestants and decide what would suit them," reveal Gajendra.

The finalists continue to make their presence felt. Judge Himesh Reshamiyya who pushed and urged Vinit into getting maximum audience vote, has decided to reward his most popular pupil with a song for Mithun Chakraborty's son Mimoh in the latter's debut film.

"Never before have our contestants seen such quick results and responses to their abilities and talent. It comes from having music composers as judges," says Gajendra.

Adieu to Jatin-Lalit after 'Sa Re Ga Ma...'
Wednesday, November 30, 2005 19:06 IST

Recently, brothers and music composers, Jatin-Lalit announced their decision to part ways professionally. But as a bid to honour an old commitment they stuck together as mentors for Zee TV's musical talent hunt show, 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005'.

With their last candidate Sharib being voted out in the episode shot this week, the duo will have to quit the show.

Lalit, Sharib and Jatin: A historic farewell

Last week contestant Swananda, tutored by them, had been voted out. Consequently candidates of mentors Ismail Durbar, Aadesh Srivastav and Himesh Reshmmiya are still in the reckoning.

Insiders reveal that the split between the brothers was inevitable. Apparently, the younger Lalit's headstrong attitude was becoming intolerable for Jatin who has been known for his polite demeanour.

That the duo worked magic with melodies like 'Pehla nasha' and 'Aaj main upar' among many others, remains undisputed.

Music is the world for Ujjaini

She gave up classroom education to make it to the finals of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa's Challenge 2005. Ujjaini alias Sunny was born with a smile on her lips and a song in her heart and literally so. This Bongoli babe, re christened 'Sunny' since her birth saw the clouds opening up to sunshine after days of rain, started responding to music from the tender age of one. For someone who regards music as her life support system, Ujjaini Mukherjee is dedication personified. "Mujhme kutch to baat hai." When I am on stage I feel the entire world has gathered for my performance."

But this perfectionist is never satisfied with her own performance, "I have to feel good about myself before a show. And that takes hours of hard work. I have a promise to keep with this competition. I am looking forward to the final round if I make it there."

When she is not readying for a performance, this lass tries a shot at numerology while also deftly creating magic from clay. Ujjaini is a self-trained potter. And this release of 'positive energy' as she calls it, is reflected in her music too at times. So be it getting inspiration from Celine Dion or then clammy cold feet before every performance, Ujjaini is a frontrunner for sure. So when Amrita Rao and Shahid Kapur attended one of her performances, Amrita was quick to comment, "I wish she done a playback for me in one of my films!"

Ujjaini's bent towards music was gauged even before she started speaking. She began training her vocal chords at the age when most of her contemporaries were busy deciding what they wanted to become when they stepped out in the world. Ujjaini always scored amongst the top three in school and her teachers had her career in medicine cut out for her. But that was not agreeable to our girl here! This teenager with a fetish for chocolates was sure music was her future. And this orientation was what got her in Challenge 05.

So when she was voted out of the competition some time back, how did it feel? "I felt completely disoriented." Ujjaini was asked to leave the competition due to the minority of votes in her favor. It was Himmesh Reshammiya, one of the mentors in the contest who got her back with the 'Brahmastra' round. It was like being reborn for her. Since then, Ujjaini has rehearsed like there is no tomorrow. And if to reiterate the fact that she has been working really hard, Ujjaini already has a movie in the offing. She is lending her voice for Jatin-Lalit's upcoming flick 'Fana'. Beat that!
