thanks

It is very annoying to see a music director of the level of HR pumping a small 'nobody' contestant like Vinit. I sometimes feel bad for Paresh and Ujjaini who probably got the adopted and rejected child treatment in the "Let's Rock" gharana. For a mentor, all their protege should be equal and they should not be biased toward one particular contestant. I personally feel that Nihira is better than Twinkle (my personal opinion) but I never found ID treating them differently.. they both were equal in front of his eyes and they have their own place in his heart. The same goes for Adesh and J-L's gharana ... but in HR gharana it is all about Vinit!!

More so this love interest propoganda is even more annoying, political and pathetic. I absolutely lost respect for HR when he started announcing Vineet's love interest ((and what's up with this topi wala Tendulkar title game????)), and also the fact (not sure if any of you noticed) that he always grades less points to his opponent gharana contestants vs. what Adesh and ID grade his contestants. Is he trying to tell public something? I hope all of you are doing genuine voting online at http://sifymax.in/saregamapa/netvote/index.php or via SMS and phone calls and not falling for these petty tricks (like adding a click so Vineet can sing better? I wouldn't have known if Adesh had not mentioned it!).

Vineet may be good, but the politics around him makes me not wanna listen to him. It feels that that's the only message coming across the show -- forcing audience to vote for Vineet. Sorry, but I rather make my own opinion than wishfully following someone else's footsteps.

I just hope that the true winner emerges from this political game!

hello mohini your explanation about HR the reason for favouring vinit is not convincing. if it is so then why did HR tell paresh [30/12/05] that he shd defeat vinit [ on the day he scored good points from the mentors] Is it another kind of politics HR playing or a lip service praising. This is the first mentor I am seeing asking one of his contestant to defeat another contestant of his own gharana, whereas other mentors are encouraging all their participants and sometimes other participants of different gharana also.

As regard to melliose views,. I entirely agree with your views that ID encourage twinkle, and nihira both though their singing style is different . AD encourage himani and rakthima or hema everybody in the same way including rajeev [though public may not like him] But this HR's behaviour is so stupid and also stooping to such low level openly asking public to vote only his favourite vinit. suppose unfortunately if public voting go against vinit, HR may not attend the srgmp 2005 as if his mentors job in the programme is no more for him that important. who knows what will be his reaction.

'Sa Re Ga Ma' finalists gear up for D-Day
Subhash K. Jha, IANS [Monday, January 02, 2006]

They are young, talented and confident of winning. Each of the six finalists of Zee TV's popular music show "Hero Honda Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005" have their fingers crossed for the Jan 21 mega-final.

In a freewheeling interview with IANS, the contestants shared their background, dreams and desires for the future.

The hot favorite for the winner's crown for the grand finale Jan 21, 2006 is Himani from Faridabad, who received the maximum number of votes.

Himani: My mother has a good voice. But my grandparents never encouraged her to be a singer. My mother wanted to live her dreams through me. Of course, she never knew I would come this far.

First I learnt light classical singing, then classical. How do I sing so effortlessly? I don't know. It's god's gift. I have worked hard. I don't think I would be able to go up on stage with so much confidence if I didn't practice hard.

I am a big fan of Lataji and Ashaji. Lataji is an exception. She's a goddess to me. I also love Ashaji's naughty numbers like 'Shubu shubu' ('Anamika') and 'O Babua Yeh Mahua' ('Sadma'). But I don't copy them. On stage it's my own voice. I plan to become a playback singer. I am just 17. I want to go as far as destiny takes me.

Now when they see me on 'Sa Re Ga Ma', folks back home are very happy with what I have achieved. When Sanjay Leela Bhansali came on stage to hug me after I sang 'Ni Main Yaar Manana Ni' ('Daag'), I was ecstatic.

Nihira: I am quite nervous. I am the only one from Mumbai among the six finalists. All of us are sailing in the same boat. There are no professional singers in my home, though everyone is fond of music.

I started learning classical music from the age of nine. My guru is Vidya Zail. I learnt light classical singing from composer Kalyanji. I idolize Lataji and Ashaji, Kishore Kumar.

And from the present lot I like Kavita Krishnamurthy, Shankar Mahadevan and A.R. Rahman. On 'Sa Re Ga Ma' I don't think about the competition. I just want to perform well. The rest is up to god.

Vineet: I am 16 years and 11 months old and the baby of the 'Sa Re Ga Ma' family. I am from Lucknow. Yes, I miss my family but have to make my career. I am known as the guy with the cap.

The cap has proved lucky for me and I always wear it while singing.

My father used to be a singer. Before I went to sleep as a child, he taught me his songs. I started singing at five and would also sing at shows. Then my family realized I was good at singing.

My studies suffered and my mother put her foot down. But I was adamant about pursuing music. My parents decided to let me pursue my goal and here I am at 'Sa Re Ga Ma'.

My biggest dream is to buy a bungalow on Juhu beach for my parents. I want to sit there sipping coffee with my parents as the waves splash against our wall. I want a car to drive around my parents. I also want to open a school for poor children.

I am too busy practising to miss my family. I just want to concentrate on my singing. The competition is stiff but I think I might win. It all depends on the public voting. My role models are (Mohammed) Rafi saab and Sonu Nigam.

Debojit: Do I sound like Hemant Kumar to you? That's fine. Though I am Assamese, all Bengali singers sound like either Hemant Kumar or Kishore Kumar. I don't think they make musicians like him any more.

Hemantda had once said he had composed 250-300 tunes for one particular lyric.

I am 29. Paresh (another finalist) and I are of the same age group. I was an engineer in a government job.

It was my mother's dream to make me a singer and not have me look after the family business. After my mother fell ill and died I met a fashion designer from Kolkata. Vandana and I fell in love and got married. She changed my life.

We both left our jobs and came to Mumbai in July 2002 without telling our respective families so that I could struggle to become a singer.

The day I am able fulfil my mother's dreams and tell my wife that she doesn't need to work (she has health problems), I will sleep peacefully.

I want to be a blend of Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi. I once assisted composer Pritam. I sang a song for him in a film called 'Shaayad' which never got released.

When Javedsaab heard it, he called me home. We sat together to work on the song. It was a full solo song. I have also sung a lot of jingles.

Paresh: I am from London, so in a way the odd one out. Zee TV organised auditions in Britain and I won. I do have an accent but that has its advantages. The public votes for me for my 'cute' British accent. But a lot of people find my Hindi funny.

I grew up listening to Hindi songs. My mom is a very good kitchen singer. But I am not going to call myself amateur. I have come all the way from London to Mumbai - quite a cultural gap.

In fact, my family flew in recently to support me. My wife is also here. So far, I was surviving on my own in Mumbai. I had to re-cast myself both physically and mentally. People say I have changed, I am a lot more confident.

To make a career in Mumbai I will have to move from London. I used to work at a bank but I had to resign for 'Sa Re Ga Ma'. I am pretty confident I will win.

Hemachanda: I am Chandu from Hyderabad. For some strange reason they call me Hemu at 'Sa Re Ga Ma'. I started singing from the age of five. I released my first album at that age.

My Hindi is good. I trained with my cousin for a month to get a hang of the language. I know when I sing the accent disappears.

Of course I would like to settle in Mumbai if I win 'Sa Re Ga Ma'. I am missing home, though all of us are comfortable. Incidentally, my sister Hemabindu was a contestant on 'Sa Re Ga Ma'. My mother is also a professional singer and she's proud of me.

My idols are S.P. Balasubramaniam and Hariharan. In Mumbai I like KK the best. I love the way he has sung 'Tadap Tadap' in 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'. One of my proudest moments was when I sang 'Tere Mere Beech Mein' (from 'Ek Duuje Ke Liye') in front of Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Kapil cries on TV again

Sa Re Ga Ma Pa contestant Vinit reduces the former cricketer to tears

Subhash K Jha

Kapil Dev will be moved to tears, yet again on national television, today when Sa Re Ga Ma Pa contestant Vinit will sing 'Sandese aate hain…' from the film Border.

While the shoot was a touching moment for the cricketer, for the singer who actually brought tears to his eyes, it was a sign of triumph. "When Kapilji cried, I knew I had sung well. 'Sandese…' is a long song. So I chose to sing only the last stanza where the soldier remembers his mother. That must've touched him," he recalls.

The shooting of the special episode also saw Dev come face to face with Himani Kapoor. The 17-year old contestant hails from Haryana and her rendering of Lata Mangeshkar's complicated 'Chitthiye…' from Henna left the cricketer speechless.

Recalling the experience, Himani says, 'Chitthiye…' is a song with lots of nuances. When my mentor Aadesh Shrivastava asked me to sing it this week, I was hesitant. I thought it was way beyond my range. But the response I got, particularly to the little innovations that I introduced to the original composition (by Ravindra Jain) was beyond anything I expected."

The 'Hurricane from Haryana'(as she is better known) earned a perfect 10 for her rendition. But ask her if she sees herself winning the finals and pat comes the reply. "I'm doing my best. People keep asking how I bring in innovations to which I don't have an answer because it just happens when I sing."

For now though she is very upbeat about the forthcoming Qawwali episode that will go on air next Thursday. "I will sing 'Der na ho jaye…' from Heena," she says.

Pride of the Silchar valley

Debojit alias 'Bapan' has become the pride of the Silchar valley. Their local website had his picture on the home page requesting the 'Sylheti' community to vote for his success. Understandably so. His latest performance of a Kishore Kumar classic gained him much kudos, not only from his hometown but also from the rest of the country.

Debojit, for the uninitiated, is the golden voice from Assam who is amongst the few finalists on Challenge 2005. A civil engineer by profession, this state government employee decided that music was the way to go. It was a promise made to his mother that turned into passion when the mater moved to her heavenly abode. "But my wife Bandana is the rock of Gibraltar for me" he says. Debojit comes from a big family. Says brother Dipankar, "We would never have imagined that Bapan could sing so well. Now I am known in Sichar as 'Debojit's brother'"

This 'seedha saadha' boy is not even close to the description post his Challenge experience. "He looks very stylish. I like him better this way." Says Bandana. The new look is complete with a goatee, streaked and gelled hair and a wicked devil-may-dare expression.

Recently on his visit to an Old Age Home, Debojit enthralled his audience to such an extent that his under-performance last week led to a lot of health problems in the inmates. In fact the Old Age Home committee has had to allow the television to be switched on till mid-night on Thursdays and Fridays, way beyond the normal 10 pm deadline. When Debojit came to Mumbai, all he had was immense confidence and Bandana's support to carry him through his ordeal. His first acquaintance was a distant friend Mr.
Tapas Kor, a social worker, who introduced him to music director Pritam Singh. That is when Star Plus offered him the background score of their serial 'Kyon Hota Hai Pyaar'. He has also sung a scratch for Javed Akhtar and sung for All India Radio and DD. But it was only after Debojit's met his Guru Pandit Askaran Sharma that the tide changed. Pandit Sharma suggested an audition for the Sa Re Ga Ma Fame series and from there on it was smooth sailing to Challenge 2005.

Says Deepak Bhattacharya, one of his voice trainer, "Debs music has a penchant for going straight to the heart. He might look a little upscale now, but in his heart he will always remain our 'Bapan'. The entire regions, from the Mizo Hills on the South, Manipur on the East and Bangladesh on the West are with him."

Answer the question below to visit the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa sets:

Who is the celebrity guest in tonight's episode?
a)Kapil Dev
b)Sachin Tendulkar
c)Virendra Sehwag

Nation's topmost music composer duo, Jatin-Lalit, aren't a couple any more

Ram Kamal Mukherjee

As they say, all good things must come to an end. So, Bollywood music director duo Jatin-Lalit have decided to part ways and work individually, after making music together for 14 years. Their musical journey started 14 years ago with chartbuster 'Bin Tere Sanam' from Yara Dildara has come to an end.

Confirming the news Lalit Pandit says, "We have decided to work separately because there were several issues with Jatin. I would not like to discuss all those matters in print. In fact, I feel there's no point in discussing something that will, anyway, not change our decision."

Lalit has already bagged his first solo film as music director with Raja Mukherji's (Rani Mukherji's brother) Bengali film Bidhatar Khela (Destiny's Game).

"I have already composed four tracks out of six. I opted for a Bengali film first, because we have a huge fan following in Kolkata and I share a very good rapport with Rani and her family since Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,"he says. The duo has created a record of sorts after composing music for 10 Shah Rukh Khan movies, all of which turned out to be super hits. Kunal Kohli's Fanaah starring Aamir Khan and Kajol, will be the last film where Jatin-Lalit will share their name on screen.

"We had a great time composing music for Fanaah and I am feeling sentimental about the fact that it will be our last film together as a music director duo," he says. Will it be difficult for Lalit to compose music as an individual, as he has always been guided by his elder brother Jatin for last 14 years? "I don't think so. Jatin has always taught me to be an independent person and I owe him a lot," Lalit replies.

"It's just that we have some sort of differences which we couldn't sort out and so mutually decided to part ways professionally. However, as brothers we shall always be there for each other."

Lalit has already signed on a couple of big banner Bollywood films and he is excited about his journey as an individual. "There was never an identity crisis as we were two like-minded individuals," he says.

With the Jatin-Lalit split, it seems that the concept of music director duo is coming to an end in Bollywood. "We should look at the positive side of this and say that music lovers will now get a double treat,"he says. "Since Jatin and I will sign on films separately, we'll give twice as much music to the audiences."

Top 10 Chartbusters from Jatin-Lalit

• Bin Tere Sanaam (Yara Dildara)
• Pehla Nasha (Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar)
• Mehendi Laga Ke Rakhna (Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge)
• Bole Chudiya (Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham)
• Chaand Taare (Yes Boss)
• Title track (Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham)
• Pal Tham Gaya Hai (Pyar Mein Twist)
• Koi Mil Gaya (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai)
• Tujhe Dekha To Yeh Jana Sanam(DDLJ)
• Hum Tum (Hum Tum)

Tirchi topiwale: Rapping with Himesh
By: Shaheen Parkar
January 9, 2006
------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------

Himesh Reshammiya as he appears now in his new look (above) and then (above right)

After the chartbuster Aashiq Banaya Aapne, music composer-singer Himesh Reshammiya is again all over the place with Jhalak Dikhalja from Anant Mahadevan's forthcoming film Aksar.

In recent times, Reshammiya has been wearing the tag of rendering hits one after the other as tightly as his cap he wears on his head. He realises that he has to consistently churn out chartbusters to stay at the top.

"I am aware that I have to keep on improving. I also know the fact that there could be that track which will not do well. I'm prepared for that," he says as he tells us…

My music sets the mood for the film…
That the film is a hit helps a lot. But as a music composer I am like the opening bastman. The music is heard prior to the film's release and if I make a good beginning, things are on track.

The cap, leather jacket are my new image…
After Aashiq Banaya Aapne, I decided to change my image. Prashant Chaddha, who has directed by debut music video Aap Kaa Surroor, is responsible for the look. He told me that it proved lucky to me with Aashiq Banaya Aapne; so we decided to stick to it. .

World music is my next step…
Right now my music is youth-oriented with Sufi, rap and raag overtures. Next, on my agenda is to compose using world music. I know exactly how to use it; I am just waiting for the right opportunity.

I compose three songs a day...
I basically follow five steps to compose a track. First, I begin with a prayer. Then I make notes of the lyrics; the genre of the film. Next I sift through my library of notes. I have over 1,000 notes composed over the years; most of them are rap-based. I then select the tune and make it raag based. Next I place the words and arrange and orchestrate it accordingly. I am a great follower of the R D Burman and Laxmikant Pyarelal kind of music.

I have immense faith in God…
Things in life are pre-ordained. You have to accept that certain events happen because God so desires. The moment you accept this, you know how to take life on.

My father, Bipin Reshammiya, is my guiding force...
Whenever I compose my music, he will listen and tell me exactly what he feels within minutes. He has been into music; so I value his comments greatly.

I am indebted to Salman Khan…
He gave me my first break with Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya. Even before this assignment I had met Salman for a project I wanted to do with him. At that time he was busy, but he promised to get back. He remembered with Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya. I owe my success to God, my dad and Salman — in that order.

Expectations are very high from me…
I get a free hand to compose and people have implicit faith in me. They depend on me for the next chartbuster.

shaheen@mid-day.com

Himesh's next
1. Abbas-Mustan's 36 China Town —- in which he has sung the title track
2. Satish Kaushik's Milenge Milenge
3. Feroz Nadiadwala's Phir Hera Pheri
4. Anil Sharma's Apne
5. His debut music album, Aap Ka Surroor, will be released by
T Series shortly

Did you know?
Himesh Reshammiya began as a TV producer when he was 16. "I was in my first year of college at Mithibai," he says. "Though music was always what I wanted to do, I dabbled with serials for a while."

His banner H R Enterprises produced shows like Andaz, Amar Prem, Aha, Jaan and Aashiqui for Zee TV. Andaz had several film actors like Prem Chopra and Poonam Dhillon.

At the moment he is concentrating on music, but has plans to do a TV show on the lines of a musical. He is also seen as a judge on Zee's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge Contest. "Participant Vineet has that voice to suit film music. I have already taken him to sing in Suresh Krishna's film Rocky for Zayed Khan."
