Singing to glory...

Subhash K Jha speaks to the finalists of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge on Zee TV before the grand finale on January 21

Subhash K Jha

NIHIRA
I'm quite nervous.
I'm the only Mumbaiite among the finalists. All of us are sailing in the same boat. There're no professional singers at home, though everyone is fond of music. I started learning classical music from the age of nine. My guru is Smt Vidya Zail.I also learnt light-classical singing from composer Kalyanji. I idolize Lataji and Ashaji. On Sa Re Ga Ma, I don't think about the competition. I just want to perform well. The rest is up to God.

DEBOJIT
I'm twenty nine years old.
I was an engineer doing a government job but I quit it to fulfill my mother's dream. My wife and I came to Mumbai so that I could struggle. We had to literally scrounge. Now, she works in a cushy company and supports us. The day I can fulfil my mother's dreams and tell my wife that she doesn't need to work(she has health problems), I'll sleep peacefully. I like Kishoreda's mardangi and Rafi Saab's pyara chalan. I want to be a blend of the two.

HIMANI
My mother wanted to live her dream of becoming a singer through me.
Of course, she never knew I'd come so far. How do I sing so effortlessly? I don't know. It's God's gift. I am confident on stage but only because I work very hard. I'm a big fan of Lataji and Ashaji.I was ecstatic when Mr Bhansali came on stage to hug me after I sang Ni main yaar manana ni (Daag). I'm just 17 and want to go as far as destiny lets me.

PARESH
I'm from London.
I have an accent and that works to my advantage as the public votes for me for my 'cute' British accent. People find my Hindi funny but I grew up listening to Hindi songs. Am I a trained or amateur singer? I'm not going to call myself an amateur. I've come all the way from London to Mumbai. I'm a lot more confident now though people feel I have changed. Earlier, I used to work at a bank but I had to resign for Sa Re Ga Ma. I'm pretty confident I'll win.

TWINKLE
I'm most comfortable singing songs with a classical touch.
But we've been told to sing peppy songs fo Sa Re Ga Ma. I've been learning music from a guru in Lucknow, my native place. But in Mumbai, my guru is Ismail Durbar. My favourite singers are Lataji, Ashaji and Kishore Kumarji. I try to model myself on Ashaji's style. My guru Ismail Durbarji has promised me and all his shishya songs in his films. For me, he has promised to compose a tune that blends thumri with the western style.

VINIT
I'm 16 years and 11 months old and the baby of the Sa Re Ga Ma family.
I'm from Lucknow and stay alone in Mumbai. I'm known as the guy with the cap. Cap mere liye bahut lucky hai. At home, I used to get up at noon. Here, I star very early in the morning. My biggest dream is to buy a bungalow on Juhu beach for my parents. Right now, I just want to concentrate on my singing. The competition is stiff. But I think I might win. It all depends on the public voting.

UJJAINI
Am I nervous about the grand finale?
I always get nervous when I get on stage. I recently sang Rock me baby from Aitraaz on the show. I burst into tears because I didn't get enough marks for that. I have been singing ever since I was a toddler. My mother is a singer and so is my aunt . I'm told when I was nine months old I had repeated a snatch of a raga that I had overheard. That's when my mother decided that music had to be my life. Let's see where Sa Re Ga Ma takes me. I need to complete my studies but I don't think that will be possible if I win.

HEMACHANDRA
I'm Chandu from Hyderabad.
For some strange reason they call me Hemu at Sa Re Ga Ma. I started singing from the age of 5 and even released my first album then. Of course, I'd like to settle in Mumbai if I win Sa Re Ga Ma. My mother is also a professional singer. A lot of people tell me that I resemble Madhavan. I was dumbfounded when Diya Mirza called me sexy on the show as I had never been told that before. My idols are S.P.Balasubramaniam and Hariharan. In Mumbai I like KK the best.

man without a moustache looks like a girl!

Says Sa Re Ga Ma Challenge 2005 contestant Hema Chandra

Who, you might ask, is Hema, airing his thoughts for the public at large. Hema Chandra or 'Chandu' or 'Chanti' if you like, is amongst the stronger of contenders for winning the Challenge 2005 Voice of India title. This tall, dark and extremely handsome introvert is the youngest in a family of four that hails from Hyderabad.

Before participating in Challenge 2005, Chandu, as he is fondly known, was busy designing sites on the World Wide Web, having done his specialization in computer animation and graphics. Singing has been in his genes since he comes from a family consisting of singers, musicians and composers. "It's like my initiation into music was a done thing." Chandu offers softly in broken English. Coming from Andhra Pradesh, his grasp over the language is a little rusty.

Hema Chandra wants to be a playback singer and is taking his stint in Mumbai very seriously. Little wonder then that Adesh Srivastav's 'Alagh' has him playback singing with Kunal Ganjawala and Shaan. "I am honored. I have always admired Shaan and Kunalji. Getting to share a song with them is the stuff dreams are made of." Admirable, since Challenge is Chandu's first-ever Hindi performance. He also has to his credit a second prize from the famous Sangam Kala All India competition.

This young man with a baritone comparable to the Bachchan's is a complete family man. "I feel rotten that I am spending the New Year away from my folks. I even missed their birthdays this year." Says a somber Chandu who regards these little occasions as the highpoints of the year. But he did manage to pick up gifts from Mumbai to send back home, making his sister Bindu chuckle with a teddy bear, his mother smile with a sari and his father proud with a wristwatch. Needless to say, family functions and festivals at home are not the same without 'Chanti's' renditions of popular Telugu numbers.

So is his family supporting him in this endeavor? "Completely. Even my father, who is an advocate, is very supportive. I guess it's just a way of life for us. Which is why when my sister Bindu could not make it in the Challenge finals, I was completely shattered."

When asked about his experience, the Chandu before Challenge is a completely different person, "They forced me shave off my moustache. I think men without that accessory look like girls!" So is he growing it back on? Say Jaidev and Chaitu, his best pals from Hyderabad "No way is he growing it back, whatever he may say in public. He told us that he loves the female attention he is getting sans the growth!" The State level Skating and Swimming champion refused to comment.

Answer the question below to visit the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa sets:

In tonight's episode, Vinit gets a very special gift from the mentor Ismail Darbar. It is?

1) A 50 rupee note which he preserved for his son.
2) A chocolate
3) A gold medal

Make-up makes me feel like someone else...

Says Himani Kapoor of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa about her makeover

Bagging a music contract at the age of 17 comes as no surprise when you meet Himani. For here is one contestant you take an immediate liking to, besides being instantly awed by the inherent talent that flows naturally. In fact, her rendition of the Rahat Fateh Ali Khan classic ' Jiya dhadak dhadak' got actress Pooja Bhatt to exclaim, "Only a Haryanvi could have the guts to select a song of the maestro. You are a superb singer. Stay the same forever and you will go a long way!"

Himani was part of the Fame Series in Sa Re Ga Ma and hence Challenge 2005 was a natural progression. She confesses , "I am a little nervous with my makeover though. Make-up makes me feel like someone else. My friends back home could not identify with my made-up image. That's why I got the tattoo done." The story behind the tattoo on her upper arm has become as famous as the design itself. It's a musical note symbolising what is closest to Himani's heart. She got it done to distinguish her self from other contestants when she is without the stage finery. The face behind the voice is making trying to reach out for recognition.

So immediate gratification came to this 12th standard student of Humanities from DAV Public School when Adesh Shrivastava presented her with an opportunity to playback in Kalpana Lajmi's next film 'Chingari'. "Can you believe it? I am singing for Sushmita Sen!" gushes the teenager. As bindaas and gutsy as most of her people, Himani is proud to hail from Haryana. Her best friends Akash and Shelly vouch for her daredevil attitude and have become loyal viewers of the competition post Himani's selection amongst the finalists. Says Shelly, "I have promised to take Himani out for as many chocolates as she can eat when she comes back with the title. And I just love her tattoo. I will get one done myself."

Himani's self-confessed flaw lies in being as sure of tomorrow as she was about the present day. This is much to her mother's consternation who cannot but hide her pride when speaking of her only daughter. "She is so bindaas that I am at times worried about her. I am sure she will win this competition."
