Gill is still unbeaten with 103 runs while Rahul fell for 100 with India posting a massive 368/3 at day 1 stumps.

With Gill, Rishabh Pant is in the middle with an unbeaten 50 in an innings where he looked to have curbed his natural instincts to go from ball one. Instead, the former vice-captain played cautiously, only going after balls that he was sure to get runs.

Sai Sudharsan, batting at No.3 after being told that he’ll be given a long rope in the position, looked impressive with his 81 runs but he fell to Saleem Safi before he could get to three figures. The only batter who will be disappointed in himself for not taking advantage of a batting pitch will be Yasahsvi Jaiswal who was sent back for 24 runs by Sarfi.

Rahul, Gill hit centuries as India dominate Afghanistan on opening day

9am, Day 2 start It was a grind for Afghanistan yesterday, there'll be a lot more today if they don't get early wickets. India are not far from running off with the game with Gill and Pant at the crease. Saleem aside, no bowler really challenged India. Even then, he was expensive. The pitch is slow, offered some seam movement early on before easing out later in the day. Afghanistan's over rate was slow and they sped things up towards the close at the cost of taking the new ball.

India's success yesterday was ensured by GIll and Pant. The foundation was laid by KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan. Rahul nicked to the keeper but survived as the umpire called it not out and Afghanistan didn't review. He stuck it out, played his shots guilt-free when opportunities came about and built match-defining partnerships.

Pitch: Michael Clarke says the middle of the pitch still looks brand new. Come closer to the crease and it's a bit drier. At the end of today, the good length for the spinner will rough up. If anything, the pitch was slow and low yesterday. That'll continue. Bowling oppositions will go straighter and fuller on such surfaces with straighter fields.
