This is for us Romance geeks
We should have something more inclusive and generic - things that we may come across in any sort of book (any genre I mean)
Some examples:
Traveling (someone goes somewhere using any form of transportation)
Food (someone cooks/ eats/ drinks something)
Fashion (someone's clothes are described)
stuff like that...
We pick one of course.
Clothes is so much more boring than tucking strands of her hair though
Can we maybe choose our own phrase/trope acc to the genres we're reading? That way everyone can be more creative and have fun
Sounds fun !🤩Originally posted by: LizzieBennet
Speaking of whimsical themes, I was thinking of this sort of alternative to a drinking game - we did this for one of my online book club read alongs. We listed out some common tropes / phrases / actions we usually come across in romances - hero puts on grey sweatpants, someone releases a breath they didn’t know they’d been holding
, he tucks a strand of her hair behind her ear, she wears his T-shirt/ sweatshirt etc etc. We would ring a bell / post a gif on the chat (whoever spotted it first). It was fun.
Maybe we can do something like that - read what you want to but everytime someone brings up something in the book (maybe Food?), post a gif in the thread along with the relevant line. Could be fun
And it’s not really a restrictive theme - everyone reads what they want to. Just makes it fun and engaging
I have few more suggestions 🤣
etc
I think this will make me pay extra attention to phrases like these

We can make it for thrillers / crime books too
Character wakes up from a nightmare in a cold sweat.
Them remembering something sinister / they get a premonition of sorts
Dreams or flashbacks reveal a disturbing hidden truth — but only in pieces.
He's been dead for hours ( when it comes to crime thrillers )
Characters lying about their names but we have met them before😪

Lols, I keep like, a tally of overused tropes/phrases. When I was listening to Zodiac Academy, I was so tempted to go onto KU and search up a bunch of words just to see exactly how many times they were used. I swear, the word 'fissure' was used in three consecutive sentences.
I keep hearing about Zodiac Academy, is it good with a strong plot?
Yeah, that will mean too many unique phrases and i think it will take away from the whole idea of finding the same phrases in common across various books

The plot is better than I expected, considering how long each book is. But keep your expectations low because this series has some pretty outdated tropes and themes, so I went into the story only caring about (and trusting) the main characters (the Vega twins) and no one else.
The worldbuilding is really fun though! They have almost every magical creature you can think of, and something about the way it's described just feels so whimsical. And I like the relationship between the sisters a lot, it's my favourite part of the series.
I also listened to the dramatized version of the audiobook, which is really well-produced with like, full cast recordings, so it makes it fun. I genuinely think that I would not be able to tolerate reading the ebook or a physical copy. It's funny, and there are definitely some well-written scenes and memorable quotes/lines, but it's not my preferred style of writing when it comes to fantasy.
