Bollywood has always possessed a strange and eerie talent for making reel life mirror real life, but very few songs in the industry's long and storied history carry a backstory as gut-wrenching and emotionally loaded as Jaspinder Narula's debut chart-topper Mujhe Ek Pal Chain Na Aaye. The song featured in Boney Kapoor's 1996 production Judaai and went on to become one of the most beloved playback numbers of its era. Now, many years after it cemented itself as a national favourite, the voice behind it has stepped forward with a confession so deeply personal and emotionally charged that it transforms the way you hear every single word of the track.
For Jaspinder Narula, walking into Bollywood meant walking straight into a dream debut. Judaai, headlined by the incomparable Sridevi alongside Anil Kapoor and Urmila Matondkar, was a thundering box office success and Narula's voice instantly became the heartbeat of its soundtrack. What nobody inside that recording room at Mumbai's Super Sound studio knew, however, was that while the song was being born, a devastating real life story was quietly and painfully unfolding just outside its walls.
"Someone's Home Was Being Built While Someone Else's Was Breaking"
Years after Judaai's release, Jaspinder Narula grew close to Mona Shourie Kapoor, Boney Kapoor's first wife and the mother of his children Arjun and Anshula. It was within this friendship that the singer learned something that left her completely shaken. Mona confided in her about what was happening behind the scenes on the very day Narula was recording that unforgettable song.
"I was very close to Mona Kapoor. Later, she told me what was happening at that time while I was recording the song. Someone's home was being built while someone else's was breaking," Narula shared in a conversation with Bollywood Thikana. The weight of that sentence alone is enough to stop anyone cold.
"I Was Singing Inside, She Was Crying Outside on the Stairs"

What Mona revealed to Narula is the kind of detail that turns a film song into a living, breathing wound. According to Narula recounting Mona's own words, "You were singing inside, and I was crying outside, sitting on the stairs of Super Sound when I found out." It was around the same time that Mona Kapoor learned about Boney Kapoor and Sridevi's relationship. The song about longing and heartache was being recorded just as its producer's first wife was sitting outside, discovering her world had changed forever.
The Song That Unknowingly Told Two Stories at Once
In the film Judaai, the plot involves Sridevi's character engineering her husband's second marriage for financial gain. Narula recalled how the song's situation was explained to her: "They told me the song was being picturised on Sridevi. They explained the situation in the film, how she gets Anil Kapoor married again because she takes money." Nobody could have predicted that the film's fiction and the producer's real life were running on eerily parallel tracks.
A Blocked Ear, a Debut Song and Hariharan's Jaw-Drop Reaction
Adding another layer to this remarkable story, Narula revealed she was not even in perfect health during the recording. "My ear had developed mucus and one of my ears was completely blocked. With great difficulty, I sang the song," she recalled. Despite that, her co-singer Hariharan was stunned by her talent. His reaction was as warm as it was candid: "Where were you? We have been seeing you on television for so long. You have just entered the industry, but you should have come much earlier."
Mona Shourie Kapoor passed away after battling cancer in 2012. Boney Kapoor and Sridevi, who had married and gone on to have daughters Janhvi and Khushi together, faced their own profound tragedy when Sridevi died in an accidental drowning in Dubai in 2018. What remains is a song, a studio staircase, and a secret that Mona carried for years before finally sharing it with a friend who had unknowingly sung it all into existence.
