I don’t say this maliciously or sardonically but Karan Johar is a full on psychological study. And I think this is something he has acknowledged to certain extent, in a manner of speaking that is. Despite being born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and seemingly having loving parents, I think his growing years were miserable for him mentally and emotionally.

He is. He's also a classic archetype of many queer people, especially those growing up closeted.

Closeted queer folks are perpetually terrified of being outed or rejected that they resort to sarcasm and meanness as a preemptive defense mechanism. They also develop a lot of resentment over not being able to live authentically or happily and make it a point to make others miserable as a twisted sense of justice. As they say, hurt people hurt others.

This is in no way a defense of KJo. There is no excuse for being persistently nasty. I can also understand teenagers and young adults acting out - but you expect adults to grow up and be mature. Especially someone with so much more privileges than the average gay person in India.

I did not know about this Zauner anecdote. smiley36

Speaking of Hemingway, not enough is discussed about ZMND drawing from The Sun Also Rises.

Never made that connection. No wonder I never really warmed up to ZNMD.

The Sun also rises would be such a straightforward Bollywood film though. It's wild to me how many easy books are available to adapt and Bollywood can't get it's shit together. I can only think of Fitoor and Vishal's Shakespeare trilogy.

Edit - A quick Google search reminded me of Saawariya and Aisha. Still such few adaptations of such readily available classics.

Kjo has openly bragged about not reading. smiley36 Don't know how many others in BW are the same.

He doesn't romanticise it.

He only says it plainly that it's there and happens.

I mean Karan's reading probably starts and finishes at Pinkvilla. So that's that.

I know atleast Sonam, Anushka, Alia are all fairly open about being readers. Ranbir also has spoken about his books a few times. Directors like Imtiaz and Bhansali also talk about it. But Vishal seems to be the only one who regularly adapts books.
