Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini and film fraternity attend Anand Sagar prayer meet in Mumbai

Industry colleagues remember Anand Sagar’s role in continuing the legacy of Ramanand Sagar’s landmark television work.

The Mumbai film fraternity gathered in quiet remembrance as several senior actors attended the prayer meet of filmmaker Anand Sagar, son of Ramanand Sagar. The meet was held days after his passing on February 13.

Among those present were veteran actors Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini and Poonam Dhillon. They were seen offering condolences to the Sagar family and spending time in subdued conversations with close associates.

Several other members of the industry marked their presence. These included Sunil Lahri, Suresh Oberoi, Padmini Kolhapure, Poonam Sinha, Raza Murad, Sonu Nigam, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Deepak Parashar, Kiku Sharda, Shashi Ranjan and Anu Malik.

Anand Sagar was part of the second generation that managed Sagar Arts, the production house founded by his father. He played a key role in backing the landmark 1987 television series Ramayan, which was created and directed by Ramanand Sagar. The show went on to shape religious programming on Indian television and remains widely remembered.

In a statement released by the family, it was said, “It is with deep sorrow and profound grief, Sagar family announces the sad demise of their beloved father, Shri Anand Ramanand Sagar Chopra, who passed away peacefully today, 13th February 2026 (sic).”

The note further read, “Son of legendary Ramanand Sagar, creator of the original 1987 TV series Ramayan, Anand ji was part of the second generation managing Sagar Arts. A man of warmth, dignity, and values, Shri Anand Ramanand Sagar Chopra touched many lives with his kindness, wisdom, and gentle spirit. He will be fondly remembered by family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him (sic).”

The family also shared details of the last rites. “The last rites ceremony will be held on: Date: Friday, 13th February 2026...Time: 4:30 PM...Venue: Hindu Smashan Bhumi (Pavan Hans), Mumbai (sic).”

Over the decades, Sagar Arts also produced several Hindi films, contributing steadily to mainstream cinema alongside its work in television.
