"It isn't about Hindi and English."
Well, basically, it is...and the international status of India is because of the English language (extensively learned in schools).
There is no doubt, that English has become the global language, although each language has it's own term for the homeland's name and foreign countries.
Bharat is Hindi, right? And there is also Hindustan and Hind for India (Jai Hind!)...and I guess, Tamil, Telugu; Malayalam and other prominent regional languages have their own name for their homeland...
But I assume that the government has something else in mind...
I won't tell people who know German, that I live in Germany, but in Deutschland... and if I do a journey to France or Switzerland speaking German I would say Frankreich and Schweiz... (but I certainly would continue to say that I do a journey to "Indien" and not say in German to "Bharat"...)
