Heritage wise it feels right, practicality wise not sure..

Maybe they do it symbolically...

Like Bombay is Mumbai now but the High court is still Bombay High court

Calcutta which itself was an anglicised word...became Kolkata but the University is still Calcutta University, even the high court..

Same for Madras-Chennai & Bangalore-Bengaluru

Redoing our whole social identity documents and identification seems like a nightmare activity to undertake when we don't even have a proper National Registry ...So maybe just as a course of identification we present ourselves as India urf Bharat

As of now our country has two names India and Bharat (as per our Constitution) but word India is more commonly used. They don't need to change the name but increase the usage of word Bharat internally...

That should be the approach

And did Mizo or Munda have any name for the entire country?? No they didn't they had a very limited area called so

And Bharat is a word spoken everywhere it's a Sanskrit word not Hindi and Sanskrit has influenced not only North Indian but also South Indian words

Bhāratavarsha was first mentioned in the Hathigumpha inscription of Kharavela from 1st century AD, and he defines its boundaries in that inscription. Forgot to add that it is a Prakrit and not Sanskrit inscription. Wikipedia should have a decent translation. You should really check it out.

(For the reference, Vedas were composed around 2000- 1900 BC, and Sangam literature was composed in 4th-3rd century BC to 3rd century CE. Ashoka came a little later than Sangam but centuries earlier than Kharvela).

And since Hathigumpha inscription is in Bhubaneshwar, we should change the name of our republic to "Bhāratavarsha" and make Bhubaneshwar our honourary second capital like Mumbai is our financial capital for the sake of abosolute decolonisation.

Irrelevant to the discussion, but sound change doesn't imply that that phonemes are deleted entirely from a language. It implies that sound change happens within certain environments.

No Sanskrit speakers, before the Britishers came, would say hafta instead of saptah because that was just illogical to them.

Like Hindi speakers wouldn't say राम षे instead of राम से just because Sanskrit phonology demands the consonant र be followed by ष and ण instead of श/स and न. Ekta wouldn't make her ML be named रमण भल्ला instead of रमन भल्ला and Bengalis wouldn't pronounce ष/स but all of them should. Because Sanskrit is devavani and mispronouncing Sanskrit words is sin. And since we cannot change what was before the Britishers, we should change the Hindi language for purity's sake.

PS. You should really check out whether "Bharat" is a common lexical word in Mizo, Ao, Urdu, Bodo, Santali (all scheduled languages of the Bharatiya constitution) when you say that it is a word spoken everywhere. Mizo, the last time I checked, didn't have a bh (भ) sound/consonant. It is the official language of Mizoram. All government work in Mizoram is done in a language that doesn't have the Bha sound in Bhāratavarsha. That would be fun. Ah, even Bodo, an official language of Assam, doesn'r have that sound in its phonemic inventory.

But I am fully in favour of people altering their mother-tongues to be able to refer to their own country. So Bhāratavarsha for the win even if it is not a common word in these linguistic groups.

Just out of curiousity, if you find how Sanskrit has influenced Ao, Mizo, Misi, Bodo etc languages scheduled in the Indian constitution, please send me references? It'd be a wonderful read. Sanskrit is such a divine language. I love it.

India is the name for the Indian republic in the Western Indo-European languages. Like Germany is the name for Deutschland in English. English is a European language that is we are currently using to write.

Btw, I absolutely want German delegates, and tourists, and students to start referring to themselves as Deutsch and their country as Deutschland in all their official and casual communication outside of the Deutschphone countries.

"BROOO, Are you from Germany? Nein, I am from Deutschland" De-u-t-s-ch-land? Nein, Deutsch–land. Cool... Are you from Munich, is it cold? It's München not Myunick. Okay, nice to meet you."

It would be so fun to update all world maps, CBSE, ICSE, state boards' books to refer to Berlin as the capital of Deutschland. In fact, all the countries apart from Britain and Italy should do that. It would be so fun to reprint books, and maps every time some country does that!

I am all for my country being Bhāratavarsha. It would be such good use of my tax-paying money tbh. Congress ruined my Bhāratvarsha

By the way what's your view on issue

Personally I don't see the need to change the name. I understand that Bharat is India's true name, but changing the name would just bring unnecessary political complications worldwide, not to mention the everyday needs of every Indian. I mean just imagine - all your documents from passport to property papers to driver's license to even your birth certificate would have to be reissued. And obviously this won't be as easy as you walking into a government office and getting it changed nor will it be as simple as the government just sending out mass paperwork to everyone.

Then let's not forget businesses that have India in their name (like India Forums) but also worldwide like here we have lots of restaurants and newspapers that have India in their name. How are they all supposed to work now? And would it even make sense? Like I love this restaurant here. It's name is Touch India. They would either have to rebrand as Touch or Touch Bharat and both just seem weird. Or think about India Forums. Renaming as Bharat Forums is just weird.

I understand the sentiment behind the name change, but Bharat is already India's unofficial name. I don't see the reason to make it the official name as well.

Bharat is not an unofficial name , our every document from our birth certificate to death certificate

Passport to Adhar , 10th class board sheet to our graduation certificate

Every document gets printed in two languages hindi n English

So if anywhere India is mentioned then you are definitely gonna found Bharat in its hindi translation

So it's not an unofficial name

Even on our currency note

On one side you'll found bharatiya reserve bank and on the other side reserve bank of india

P.s hindustan is an unofficial name

Thanks for your response and I agree to your statement there is no need for this name Change

Just a minor correction @bold Bharat is actually an official name of this country. The country has two official names- India and Bharat as per the constitution of India and both have equal status as also confirmed by honorable Supreme Court. It's just that we use the word India more commonly.

The first section of Constitution says India that is Bharat in English and Bharat joki India hai in Hindi
