This has been overlooked at the time of independence itself .

Like Bengal was partitioned into East Bengal and West Bengal .

East Bengal has long since named their mother lad as Bangladesh . Why is the West portion stuck being west ?

Why can’t be be just Bangla ?
Mamata didi better address this issue . Now is the time .

Instead of West Bengal it can be Bangal. Afterall there is no East and West Punjab. Both India and Pakistan use the name Punjab for their parts of erstwhile province

The legacy of West Bengal is from the earlier partition of Bengal in 1905

About the first part, basically it was always India used in English and Bharat for Indian languages including Hindi

Like our passport says Republic of India and Bhartiyay Gantantra...

In English version of constitution the line is India that is Bharat while in Hindi version it is Bharat joki India hai..

While nowhere officially mentioned, the trend was always to use Bharat for Indic Languages communication and India for English

Now they are using Bharat in English communication too..

I don't mind it, but India word shouldn't be given up, else Pakistan will take that name and claim our legacy

I don't think India would be removed completely.

But Bharat will be given importance over India.

Yes that shall be the approach...

India is a legacy we should carry as rightful heirs... Bharat is our pride and should be promoted.

off course it's not practical

Changing a state name, its railway station's name is a whole different thing

but changing the name of an entire nation would bring too many complications.

Yes you are right

Changing the name is complicated and not needed

While usage of Bharat can be Increased India name needs to be continued too

Not every one in Bharat itself speaks Hindi or calls India Bharat. Let's take the Mizo name for India or the Munda term for India and make it the official name of our republic.

If we can learn the colonisers' language and call our own country "India", they can learn Mizo or Munda, or Ho, or Dogri.

It'd cost the taxpayers the same amount of money, anyway.

While we are at it, let's change the official name for Hindi as well. The स—> ह sound change is far too westernised.

Hindi or Sanskrit had the sound "h" so that is not needed

And did Mizo or Munda have any name for the entire country?? No they didn't they had a very limited area called so

And Bharat is a word spoken everywhere it's a Sanskrit word not Hindi and Sanskrit has influenced not only North Indian but also South Indian words

Actually Greeks called us Indi Indos or India around 2500 ago, so it's not technically British word.

Interesting topic!

Heritage wise it feels right, practicality wise not sure..

Maybe they do it symbolically...

Like Bombay is Mumbai now but the High court is still Bombay High court

Calcutta which itself was an anglicised word...became Kolkata but the University is still Calcutta University, even the high court..

Same for Madras-Chennai & Bangalore-Bengaluru

Redoing our whole social identity documents and identification seems like a nightmare activity to undertake when we don't even have a proper National Registry ...So maybe just as a course of identification we present ourselves as India urf Bharat
