Rani's performance in Saathiya is not all that it is cracked up to be, but it is still a hell lot better than Ash's artificial performance in Devdas. Devdas was a good film and Ash looked the part, but the performance felt lifeless to me. She had a lot of problems in the emotional sequence, where her wooden face didn't move or her eyes didn't speak the emotion she was supposed to display. Prefer her in raincoat or Provoked.

So for 2002 I will go with Rani.

Ash was awesome in Devdas. Not a single false note. She sunk her teeth into Paro completely.

Rani was good in Saathiya, but nothing outstanding. If you watch the original of Saathiya, Alaipayuthey, you would see the actress in the original did a far better job. Shalini looked really authentic and geniune.
