What about this tweet?

https://twitter.com/AzmiShabana/status/913654831428063233?s=20

What about her calling out Hinduism on Karva Chauth? She should know KarvaChauth is hardly a religious practise but a Cultural one of the women of Punjab. Sure its been adopted by the rest of the country thanks to Yash Raj & Dharma but her half knowledge & propoganda has always been dangerous.

The first memory I have of Azmi as a child was her calling out the most unassuming actors of them all, Sunny Deol, anti-muslim and wanting to ban Gadar. How was Gadar anti- muslim? No different than all the Saffron warriors wanting to ban films because "Love Jihad".

Anybody who uses religion to divide people should not be trusted. Azmi has an agenda, as much as Kangana has one. Baaki Lady of Steel, Fearless etc to Kangana ko bhi bahot log bolte hai. Both pick and choose fights that suit their agendas. Ignore the ones that dont. Azmi will fight for justice when a muslim is wronged or a Hindu man rapes someone. Kangana will fight for justice when a Hindu man is wronged or a Muslim man rapes someone. Same coin, two sides.

That tweet looks like a call out of INDIAN society, not Hinduism. She didn't say only Hindus do those things, did she? Yeah, those were Hindu deities she used as example of what women could be if given a chance. I'm not certain why you find it offensive.

I haven't seen what she said about Karva Chauth so can't comment on it.

Gadar was an awesome movie. No idea why she wanted to ban it. If it was for religious reasons, that was terrible because the movie in no way blamed Islam. Jinnah and Paki Muslims caused the split... fact, which should not be sugarcoated.

An aside: Deols are a regressive bunch even if they're quiet about it.

Its offensive because she doesn’t have guts to give the same moral lessons to the mullahs and moulvis of her religion taking the examples of the various Prophets the religion follows.

Pray, tell which part of the tweet excluded Muslims from the opinion she expressed?

And name a few prophets from Islam she could've used as example. AFAIK, the only woman mentioned by name in the Koran is Mary. How would SA have used Mary as example? Her only role was as mother to Jesus. Edited to add: this was not to insult Mary or motherhood. Someone obviously taught Jesus, and since he didn't have formal education, it had to be his mother. But she wasn't in a position of formalized power.

Bottomline is: some people live to be offended.

How is the whole incident being sensationalised? The goal post hasn't changed at all but it has led from one link to another. It is bringing out all the worms from the BW can. Let it come out. Why is she in a hurry to hide it and shut it?

I don't know which of these mean dividing people using religion.

To paint all Muslims as one would be negating the complex layers of culture in shaping a person's identity. I am not a practising Muslim...For me Muslim means Urdu, Biryani, Eid, the Urdu language and my ganga jamuni tehzeeb, my composite culture.

"I am an Indian Muslim and I feel no affinity to the Saudi Arabian Muslim. I feel much closer to my Indian Hindu, Indian Christian and Indian Sikh friends. What I have with them in common is a shared history, a shared identity and a shared future," she added.

Appalled to read that @iamsrk Diwali greeting invites the wrath of rabid Islamists, gets called a "False Muslim" for sporting a tilak!"

FUNDOS get a life! Islam is not so weak that it stands threatened by what is a beautiful Indian custom. India's beauty is in her Ganga Jamuni tehzeeb," tweeted Shabana Azmi.

The formidable Shabana Azmi, a vocal Muslim activist and considered India’s finest dramatic actress, says her father, the legendary poet, Kaifi Azmi, inculcated the most secular values in his children Shabana and cinematographer-filmmaker Baba Azmi. “There was an absence of religious practice in our house but religious festivals were celebrated both in our home and the film industry, Diwali, Holi, Eid, Ganesh Chaturthi being the major ones. Both my sisters-in-law (actresses) Tanve Azmi and Sulabha Arya are Maharashtrians. Ganesh Chaturthi is big in our home, though we will miss the flow of visitors this Ganesh Chaturthi, because of the Coronavirus.”

Shabana feels the spirit of cultural and religious pluralism is embedded in India’s DNA. “India’s greatest strength is her pluralism and her composite culture. My father, Kaifi Azmi, instilled a love in the family for our rich cultural heritage which has at its core diversity and exclusiveness. We grew up celebrating all festivals and continue to do so till date.”

Maybe I'm missing something here but I still don't see how she is partial to just one religion, given that she herself is not religious. I've always seen her speak for the cause than anything else and I'm happy she continues to do so. I feel a certain section of twitter has branded her as one because she is a hardcore communist.

Wow. This is essentially what every Indian feels ,at least used to feel , regardless of their religion. I love how we celebrate Diwali with as much enthusiasm as we wish each other Eid Mubarak and Merry Christmas. That is the India that I relate to. But it is also a fact that the Congress has repeatedly misused the religion and marginalized the majority just to stay afloat despite the failures which is why they have become vexed and chose BJP with a thumping majority. It’s unfortunate that BJP is doing the same thing and dividing the country using divisive tactics and losing the trust.

If this what she is and believes in, then I take back my earlier comments about her. It was probably the case of selective reporting then. Because I have never come across these other statements by her. :(
