Lot of factors imo.

The grandeur of it was unseen of in indian cinema. The 40min long battle sequences were epic, something that I dont recall watching till date.

The characters, esp female ones, were strong which is a not an usual occurrence for a movie based / focussing on male character.

The sheer and sincere effort put in each and every aspect by the entire crew and cast was commendable and the outcome was an excellent movie.

I also feel that though money making ofcourse is imp but the creators (Rajamouli and co) also focussed on the art, respected it and didnt treat it like just a means to make bucks.

First of the franchise was visual spectacle. It ended on cliffhanger which ignited interest and curiosity among audience. WKKB was a meme which further helped it reach wider.

Second of the franchise too was a visually stunning artpiece.Great cast, well portrayed characters, emotional quotient, win of good over evil, never seen before stunts ,plus few powerful scenes all of it rolled into one.. i was made for the big canvas, so people rushed to not miss it. Bahubali is perfect definitation of Celluloid entertainer. Bahubali had a repeat value which most hindi films lack these days.

I loved the movie and not trying to discredit it in any way...they all deserved the huge success And it took incredible skill, guts and passion to make it
the way they merged those gr8 visuals with equally intense drama is awesome ...most films get either of them right or neither right

It’s rare to get both right...kudos👌

Buttttt

I also think a large part of its success was how it resonated with religious sentiments ...check the comments on the Hindi songs on YouTube and most ppl appreciate it for showing culture in such a positive, majestic light ...the inspired hindu mythology, slokas, gods etc

Given how liberal bollywood films had become, they hadn’t seen much of that recently in Hindi movies with strong religious overtones ...

I think that’s a major reason why it worked so well in the interiors of north and ppl felt so connected with it...

I don’t necessarily see it as good or bad but to each his own

You may be right, honestly I love Indianized things because India has such a colorful culture. That's why I like movies which are based in a lot of Indianized thing as Stree or Bareilly ki barfi etc. The too much of modern thing is somewhat boring to watch after awhile cos you already see it in hollywood films, it's the culture that makes India unique

Completely disagree on religious overtones leading to Bahubali's success. Had that been the case, Kedarnath would have been a blockbuster!

Imo, apart from the stupendous direction, acting, music, writing, cinematography, costumes, set design, etc, the X factor that worked was the fantasy genre in an unspecified period setting. Exactly like Game of Thrones. VFX (by Indian standards) comes a close second.

Bollywood audience, me included, are hungry for good fantasies specially in a period setting. If they make one on Arabian Nights, with paris & djinns, that'll work as well, if the quality is good!

kedarnath was a hit last I checked .....and it’s songs particularly Namo namo became immensely popular....yes it wasn’t a blockbuster but it didn’t have gr8 drama , concept or screenplay or acting which baahubali did

like I said, did not discredit baahubalis technical finesse and prowess but ...a lot of ppl in remote villages etc loved the “Hinduness” of it

Which is perfectly fair
