(CNN)Basketball Hall of Famer and Georgetown men's basketball coach Patrick Ewing said Friday he has tested positive for the novel coronavirus that causes Covid-19.

Ewing, 57, tweeted, "This virus is serious and should not be taken lightly. I want to encourage everyone to stay safe and take care of yourselves and your loved ones."

Ewing, who won an NCAA championship in 1984 as a Georgetown player, said he wanted to thank health care workers and everyone on the front lines of the pandemic.

"I'll be fine and we will all get through this," Ewing said.

Longtime Utah Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan is dead at 78

The university said Ewing is isolated at a hospital. He is the only person in the program to have tested positive for the virus, Georgetown said.

Ewing played most of his NBA career with the New York Knicks but also had stints with the Seattle SuperSonics and the Orlando Magic. He scored almost 25,000 points and had more than 11,000 rebounds in his 17-year career.

Read the article .Maybe they could’ve worked out and split the responsibilities better but he said he couldn’t help in taking care of the child within like 3 days( when there are women had to give up and do this for years). How many cases to do we see of guys who decided to quit his job or had to dissolve their company because they decided to do take care of kids ?( very rarely ). Also, there are 13 people who will need to file for unemployment claims and might not have healthcare insurance during this pandemic because of this.A lot of household / childcare responsibility disproportionately falls on the woman which needs to be addressed and that can only be done when we discuss situations like this instead of ignoring it .

An unemployed man with a wife who provides for the family , completely refuses to take care of their kid, consequently the woman dissolves her company to take care of the kid ( coz apparently she cannot "afford" help ) - I am sorry but this story is nuts .. Do you actually believe this story ? .. Which part exactly compels you to believe this story ? - the spoilt unemployed man child ? .. OK .. 😆

if this story is true and if we really are going to judge at a gunpoint - i will judge the man AND the woman ( some people arent meant to be parents ) ... For now , i am sticking with judging neither ..

Georgetown coach Patrick Ewing has tested positive for the coronavirus, the school announced Friday. The Hall of Famer is under care and isolated at a local hospital.

"I want to share that I have tested positive for COVID-19. This virus is serious and should not be taken lightly," Ewing said in a statement. "I want to encourage everyone to stay safe and take care of yourselves and your loved ones. Now more than ever, I want to thank the health care workers and everyone on the front lines. I'll be fine, and we will all get through this."

The school said Ewing is the only member of the Georgetown men's basketball program to have tested positive for the virus amid the ongoing pandemic.

Following his famed NBA playing career, Ewing took over as Georgetown's head coach in 2017 after spending 15 years as an assistant coach for four NBA franchises.

Arguably the best player in Georgetown history, Ewing led the Hoyas to their only national championship in 1984 and won the Naismith College Player of the Year award in 1985. He earned first-team All-American honors in three consecutive years from 1983 to '85.

Ewing was an 11-time NBA All-Star with the New York Knicks, averaging 22.8 points, 10.4 rebounds and 2.7 blocks during his 15-year career with the Knicks, Seattle SuperSonics and Orlando Magic.

He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008.
