Okay let me just say you guys are awesome. :) I tried to do justice to the next one - the abir-mishti conversation is crucial, and I tried my best but I am not sure how much of it I was able to do. :) how it came out. Please leave in your views. That helps.
Also the next few parts will be interspersed with flashbacks - we will go back and read about the events of the week. Mostly flashback will be in italics.
Do read and review. Your comments help me get better and your critiques are even more valued. :) :)
PART 4
Mishti tugged at her hair absentmindedly. A week. It had been one whole week. 7 days since her life had completely turned upside down. First, she and Kunal had called off their courtship, actually, Meenakshi aunty had called off the courtship that day in the hospital -
"MISHTI. HOW DARE YOU?!"
Mishti whirled around to see Meenakshi aunty glaring at her. Behind her she could see Kunal staring at her - she quickly searched his face for grief - she didn't want to hurt anyone. There was none present, and she instantly felt relieved.
"I already told you once, Mishti" Meenakshi aunty said stepping inside the room, "my son is not some car that you can test drive. This courtship is over"
"Oye hello. Dukhyari madam"
Kuhu's taunt jerked her away from her thoughts, shaking her head, Mishti looked at kuhu in the mirror. The other girl was standing behind her wearing an irritated expression.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" She asked, planting her hands on her hips, her wild curls floating around as she shook her head, "I have been asking you to move but you seem completely lost".
That wouldn't be wrong. She was lost.
Mishti frowned as she placed her comb back on the dresser and stood up, making way for kuhu.
"I am already late. Kunal is going to be mad. Hashtag sadu boss"
Mishti glanced at kuhu out the corner of her eye, the girl had a hint of smile as she shook her head, a tinge of red creeping up her cheeks. Mishti's eyes instantly perked up, "ku-hu" she drawled, wrapping an arm around kuhu's shoulder, "is that a blush I see. What's going on between you two?"
Kuhu quickly rearranged her features and brushed mishti's hand away, "nonsense. He just got out of a relationship" that wiped the smile right off Mishti's face. She turned around, somehow not able to look Kuhu in the eye, "there was no relationship" she muttered, walking to her bed and sitting down on the edge, "in fact, now I know that neither of us were really interested"
Kuhu came around to face her, her eyes glowering with anger, "really?" She huffed, glaring at her, "why didn't you just say no? Hashtag no is an option"
If only it was that easy
Mishti shook her head, "it's not that easy, Kuhu. It's not" she repeated again, seeing the ' oh please ' expression on the other girl's face. " I had to think about our family. Badi ma, bade Papa - and I didn't have any reason to say no"
"Oh please" Kuhu spat, voicing her thoughts this time, " you don't fall in love because there was no reason to say no." She said, exasperated, "when you know, you just know"
When you know you just know. Was it that easy?
If it was, then - Mishti gulped - then, what she had known for the last week - did she have the guts to act on it? The real question was was she ready to accept it?
"No"
She didn't realise she was speaking out loud, until kuhu said, "what no?"
She shook her head, dragging her thoughts away from her tangled emotions, "I mean, when a guy says a no, no one questions him, it's taken at face value. But when a girl says no, she is asked why" Mishti shrugged "that's just how the society is" she said looking up at kuhu.
Kuhu opened her mouth to retort before her phone rang, "damn it" she cursed, rushing over to her phone. She grabbed her bag from the bed and threw her a look of disdain on the way out.
Mishti sighed, pushing herself off her bed and went to her dresser, when you know, you just know " you do know, don't you?" She asked her mirror self. All she got in reply was a blank stare.

Abir tossed and turned in the floor. The sun's rays filtered in through the tent, making him squint. Groaning, he pulled his hands over his eyes - he didn't want to wake up which was unlike him. He usually loved early mornings.
But that had changed. He didn't want to wake up because there was nothing to look forward to in the day.
"Damn it" Abir muttered under his breath as a sense of melancholy swept over him as he thought of the events of the last week. It had been one week since he had realised his feelings for Mishti was much deeper than he thought. It had been one week since he had met with an accident and it had been one week since Mishti had found out.
She had been mad. Of course she had been mad. He could handle that. What he wasn't able to handle was her pain as he had found out when they had met 2 days after his accident.
"Mishti" he called tentatively, as he approached her. The park that she had called him to was abuzz with children engrossed in their games. She had her back towards him. At the sound of her name she turned around and gave him the look.
Ouch!
"Sit down"
He sat down beside her, and both fell into silence as they watched the kids playing a game of catch before them.
Mishti was the one to first break the silence, "you have always been there for me" she said.
Okay, this he hasn't expected. He looked at her, brows raised, "always" she said looking him in the eye.
They say that unsaid words dig a deeper hole than the ones said. What she WASN'T saying wasn't lost on him. You've always been there for me - so why did you do this?
He turned around to face her, "I'm sorry Mishti" he said, "but I didn't want you to succumb to pressures of the society and be stuck in a loveless marriage. I just wanted this to be YOUR decision. Just yours and -"
His voice fumbled as Mishti was looking at him with an incredulous expression. He sighed and looked away, realising that how much ever he tried to explain it, it probably sounded like a feeble attempt at justifying his actions.
"Go on" she said softly.
He shook his head, "I should have stopped with the flowers. I'm sorry" he repeated not knowing what to say further.
"It's not your fault" she said somberly. He looked up at her in surprise. She nodded, "not entirely your fault" she reiterated. He nodded.
"But it's so tough, Abir. I'm happy the engagement was called off. Personally. But I don't live isolated, do I. Badi ma and bade Papa - they took me in when my own parents abandoned me" Mishti trailed off, looking down at her feet, a big blotch of her tears falling down on her knees.
Abir's heart broke into a thousand pieces - all he wanted was to take her in his arms and assure her everything would be ok.
But since he couldn't do that - yet - he reached out and placed his hand on hers. Giving it a little squeeze he said, " Rajshri aunty and vishambar uncle love you Mishti"
A tingle shot up her spine when he clasped her hand in his.
"They would do anything for you" he said, his eyes meeting hers.
"So would I"
A few minutes passed as they looked at each other, a stray balled whizzed near their feet distracting Abir for a moment.
"Mishti no. Not at the sake of your own happiness" he said exasperated.
Mishti smiled a humorless smile, " I know. I am not some Mahaan epitome of sacrifice. It's just that as it is, it's tough to be firm and stick to my choice when I think of everything bade Papa and badi ma have done for me. It would have been much easier to say no if you hadn't done the things you did" she said, her eyes downcast, her voice breaking.
The reality of what she was saying struck him. He knew he had made things difficult. He didn't realise how much. And she wasn't angry. She was hurt. And that gnawed at his insides more.
"You aren't angry" he stated, half hoping that she gets mad at him.
She shook her head, "no. I'm not. I'm hurt"
Sniff.
Oh, Screw it all. Abir threw caution to the wind and pulled her into his arms. She froze for a second before her hands came up under his arms and over his shoulders.
And just like that the sounds around them drained. As far as he was concerned, It was just the two of them. Abir didn't know what he could say to make it better. He usually wasn't the one to draw a blank when it came to words.
What the hell was happening to him?!
Mishti knew she shouldn't be doing this. After the debacle that was her courtship and her almost engagement, she needed to back off from Abir. Atleast till the dust settles. But she couldn't help it. He had been there for her whenever she was confused or her mind and heart were in a turmoil. Every single time. And just like that, he had always managed to make it better. And she had come to rely on him. As much as she relied on herself, maybe even more.
