So Steven Spielberg is trying to get Netflix barred from Oscars. It has ignited some controversy.
But it made me wonder how Streaming stacks up against theaters in India. High-speed internet availability in India is even lower than in the United States. So can streaming-only movies really cater to the masses?
A lot of people tend to judge movies based on BOI performance. Many people say star power determines salary. Similarly, TRP determines television ratings and value. How can content without TRP or Box office data be evaluated? What determines salary in streaming flicks? What determines if a streaming movie is hit or flop? Would some movies dismissed as flops have been better off as streaming releases?
There is also the risk factors. Netflix can make an anthology like Lust Stories and not worry about causing quite a stir. Do you think more niche filmmakers will be tempted to go the streaming route? Alternatively, can good niche films like Lipstick Under My Burkha recover money if the audiences prefer to stream content instead of watch something in the theaters?
Many here are saying that theaters are outdated and a relic of the past. I still see movies as a social experience. Streaming simply cannot recreate the magic of going to theater with friends/family. But I grew up in India. Do Indians share my POV that the big screen cannot and should not be let to die? Or do they believe that streaming can and will change how we consume movies - and could make theaters irrelevant?
